British Ambassador to Japan

Was invited to have lunch at the British Ambassadors residence in Tokyo. Had no idea what to expect so thought I'd better be safe than sorry so took along some Nendoroids for him ^^;
The residence lawn - the photo doesn't capture how big it is. Was a lovely sunny day with butter flies dancing around. Never seen a lawn this big in Tokyo.
Have not been back to the UK for a while now and the more time I spent in the residence, the more I started to feel a homesick - homesick for a visit but not to live as I love it here in Tokyo.
This is a map of the London underground with a difference - each station is named with British celebrities like Bruce Forsyth, Terry Wogan and others.
And then its time for lunch.
Japan and Britain is celebrating 60 years of harmonious relations. For the whole of 2008, there have been (and will continue to the end of the year) performances and exhibitions to showcase the UK's contemporary creativity in the arts, science and innovation, and in creative industries.
The event is called "UK-JAPAN 2008" and is organized by the British Embassy and British Council, working in partnership with a range of high-profile sponsors from UK and Japanese industry.

My involvement is something along these lines which I will go into detail at another time.
Main dish - those carrots where lovely and tasted just like the frozen ones we got at Tescos back in Hackney.
And what did the ambassador David Warren think about the otaku culture? He seemed to be already knowledgeable about the culture and loved the Nendoroids!
The Ambassador David and in the lounge which was more like a huge hall ^^;
Attending the lunch were select members involved in UK-JAPAN 2008 ranging from university professors to Industrial designers but mostly members of the British Council.

I didn't think that people would be networking and only carried my usual stock of business cards so ended up giving away my dannychoo.com Mirai card which folks loved!
Will be making our next batch of Mirai Inc business cards with Mirai and Haruka-chan printed on it.

Also met a professor from Musashino Art University which was the model for the anime Hachimitsu and Clover. Have been invited for a visit so if you have any Hachimitsu questions then let me know.
Am looking forward to bringing you coverage of Musashino and other universities too (met a few more professors).
More of the main lounge.
A closer look to see a photo of the Japanese prince.
Battle of Trafalgar.
Entrance way with hi-tec toilets around the corner.
This is my second time at the residence. The last time I was here was quite a few years ago attending a party held with the scientific journal Nature.
Ambassador David and his wife.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
I has the same flower vase ^^;
Interesting collage of photos.
The tick tock sound from this old clock was so soothing - must get one for our new house.
And after lunch its off to central Tokyo for more meetings.
Quickly pop back to the office to find that somebody broke into the house and left something for me.
Then its back outside for more meetings.
And then on the way home we stop in Shibuya for some Vietnamese food.
Quick walk around Shibuya to check out the latest trends.
And then stop in the Depa Chika (underground department store) for some grub.
The freshly baked bread looked lovely...
..until I spotted one of humans furry friends.
Depa Chika mainly sells food which you take out - most of them are desserts or side dishes.
We picked up some of these fish type dishes mixed with nuts.
Going back to the car.
Spot a London bus painted white which rounded up my desire to make a trip back to London.

For those of you who were raised in a country different to the one you live in, do you get home sick form time to time?
First time here?
If you are new here, you may want to keep up with more of the same via RSS or Danny's other networks. (dont show again)

I would love to see him fiddling with those nendroids you gave him.
It always surprises me how many utensils are required for a meal. The lunch looks almost like a dinner course.

omg Danny if U visit the university pretty please take lots of pix! I enjoyed Honey and Clover so much ^O^
And funny how you talk about homesickness, I guess as much as I hate to admit it, I do get homesick ^^; I'd want to visit SG when we save more money tho, but it's a bit too hot and humid for me to want to live in :P I think the main thing is I miss my mom's cooking (And my family and friends back there too) and some of the Singaporean food is just unbeatable overseas lol! I guess I also miss it being a lot easier to get around in SG, even tho Japan/HK's train system feels more efficient lol. And AH please pretty please take lots of pix in SG (if you're not just there for business ^^;)

Hmmm define homesick.

Homesick for where I grew up? yes I would like to go back there someday and think about moving back. Homesick to go back home to family? Absoloutely not (I do not like the lot of 'em). I assumed a place where you once lived, and my most recent home being the one where my family lives, no, I am not homesick. I AM homesick for a certain city and a few certain towns.

I have been waiting for this one. I should have known it was something to do with 60 ani. of relations, since Canada just had its 80 years of Harmonious Relationships with Japan in 2008. Many of the Anime Conventions in Canada were included in the events this year. ^^

Maybe Potato Chobit, you and I could figure out something "otaku" to do some time. You should have took a photo of the embassador playing with his new nendoroids, that would have been surreal.

I don't miss my home country that much, what with having experienced racism and it being overall depressing. It did help me being more realist though, so it's not all bad.

So glad to hear that Danny... you really are going to be the ambassador of all things Otaku then? XD

Keep us informed of your part in the play (UK-JAPAN 2008)!

About Hachikuro... didn't know there was a role model for one of my all-time favorites animes. What is the character relation of that professor you met?

Oh, I loved those underground department stores... is that the one at Shinjuku station?

Too many
That was a cool post Danny :) To answer your question. Well I left the UK to live permanently in Canada a few years ago now (being married to a Canadian was quite the incentive - long distance marriages...not recommended) and I do try and get back to the UK at least once a year or so. Sometimes I miss it, I miss the people and some of the places that I have a sentimental attachment to but a visit is all I think I'll ever need. After a week or so in the UK I begin to miss my home here and I begin to notice some of the reasons that made me willing to leave in the first place. Hmm that was a longer post than I intended!

Very cool underground poster. Would be pretty cool to have. My walls are pretty bare atm...
I'm really good at not being homesick. Sometimes I think theres something wrong with me lol. All I felt after going to uni was a pang literally just after they left, and then nothing, I just settled into my own thing. Makes me think moving further away will be pretty easy for me. I've been good at school trips that were quite far since I was like 9, and went to Germany when I was 11! For the Koln xmas markets. So pretty... Wish I could go again.

Also... do I see Choco Cornets among that table of bread?

Think theres any chance than Danny-san will one day attend a UK convention?

Ironically, I am kinda sick of my home. Which means that I need to find a job that will let me move to a different city and have my own place... with enough money to get a figure, manga, video game, or anime from time to time.

But until then... I decided to find a way to get my own cloning facility. There, I would clone thousands of Danny clones... Train them to be moderators... And execute Order 44 when flaming and trolling become a serious issue.

But knowing my luck, they will just dance instead of removing them.

A completely new environment can cause a culture shock, and it's not easy to get over with in a short period of time. How much one wants to accept or to reject the new change(s) is a big factor on whether one feels homesick or not, or at least on what I've known so far.

I do get homesick sometimes when small things from different countries remind you of back home. The cows all over the place in Cambodia. The humid weather and a fan blowing in your face in Singapore. Everywhere super spaced out requiring a car to go anywhere in Guam. Little things like that.

As for me, I do get homesick once in a while. It's been over 16 years since I've been back to my hometown, even though I've visited Japan a couple of times within that period (damn the allure of Kyoto! ^^). If I get stationed in Japan, I'll have to head north for a visit.

I am thinking tho my friend, it is time for you to invest in a proper suit. With all due respect, even otaku need the proper threads when invited to these swank events. To which I believe there will be lots more of; just a thought.

Moved to Canada from HK a decade ago - not my choice, but a decade being half my lifetime means that I was too young to have a say then. :P I miss Hong Kong every now and then; always want to visit and considering moving back. I think I'm too accustomed to here now though.

It's interesting how all the people who talked about leaving their home country seem to have ended up in Canada.

Danny - great bit about the networking and business cards. I guess you've gotten to the point where having Mirai on your business card is seen as creative, nifty and representative rather than unprofessional. :)

I didn't mean that Danny writes any Engrish but more like people get used to a lower standard. What I meant was that we see everything relative to something and if we are used to read something of a low standard then decent but not 100% correct grammar will stand out as great. I have seen several people writing about this so it's not just my personal observation.

If anybody shouldn't be familiar with the term "Engrish", then it's unskilled people trying to write something in English. There is a huge collection of funny results of this at www.engrish.com

"I have"
"You Have"
"He/she/it has"

That's how I learned it at school. However based on the reactions here I googled both "I have" and "I has" and it would appear that both are widely used. I thought I have finally mastered English grammar (English isn't my native language) but now I'm more confused than ever.

So the whole thing is about making errors on purpose since it should be funny... I don't get the funny part and I likely never will. All I can say is that if you get used to see a certain error then eventually you will start to remember what you usually see as the correct one.

And yes I meant puzzle. This was a failure to proofread rather than an attempt to be funny (oops)

To get it you most likely need to lurk in lots of forums with image threads and possibly 4chan.

I don't think you can get that brainwashed, especially when you get proper grammar hammered on your head (well at least for me) or it's your first language. Unless you're in beginner English level or something, you can't miss sth like "I has l33t zkillz" ^^U

Not having spent more than two weeks out of the country yet, I can't really speak on the level homesickness from staying away that long. I am trying to go on exchange to Japan either in the spring or next fall. I'm sure there's going to be some random thing that will just sandbag, but I already know that I'm going to miss my dogs and, apparently, decent cheese. My Japanese teacher just mentioned today that it's hard to find good cheese in Japan. That depresses me. I love cheese. :( It reminds me of how, when I spent those two weeks in Europe, I found myself missing breakfast cereal and salted butter.

I do get homesick, mostly just for food. I think if I were living in Canada or England, there would be some differences but I could probably get a lot of the same ingredients I need to make my favorites. Here, and particularly in the rural Iwate area, it's almost impossible. The thing I miss the most at this point is a good sandwich, the onigiri of the west. The last time I had a good sandwich was when I was home last year. :(

Haha, I like how completely British the British embassy seems to be in Japan. British food, the lawn and even the architecture looks like it's here in the UK.
I still live in the UK so I can't really say if I would feel homesick or not but I've been living on my own for a month now and I haven't felt homesick at all.
Come visit the UK! You know you want to, where did you live? You mentioned getting food from Hackney, I used to live in Leyton which isn't too far from there.

Hi, danny (i don´t know if ya will read this but well it your blog...) i don´t tend to write very often ...but i'm always checking your website...always......i really like it a lot and i´m here since ...well...some years now...and ok, lets get to the topic...i´ve forgoten the word "homesick" cause i´ve learned in the past and in my mother language there is no specific word for it....but a lot of "special" words for other things....i do really feel homesick very often but i can´t return now that i´ve made a life overhere...i go home and visit sometimes...like each two moths or so....and i really love being there and i enjoy my time there every second...i´m currently studying and my best friend..also "suffers" the same sickness....he is from the same place i´m and we met there long time ago....i wonder if it is nostalgia or homesickness that we are experiencing both of us...but i really miss my hometown...but i can´t go back now that i´m studying....kinda sad, i know that....well i guess time should pass to let me have a deep thought about this

No casinos here in Japan, so I get a little homesick when I think of the poker I could be playing in Vegas.

Other than that, love it here in Tokyo and don't really get homesick at all.

Miss good Mexican food, though.

I didn't realise there was a UK-Japan national event going on this year - a shame I won't be visiting Tokyo until summer or autumn next year. Great pics of the embassy (the Queen!) and downtown though. Shibuya looks so...photogenic, especially at night.

I love the idea behind that pic of the Underground (which is a great way to get around the city, unless it's during a heatwave) though...I enjoy visiting the place but I'm not sure I could actually live there long-term. If the career prospects are good though, I'll consider it.

Amazing! Invited to a meal with the ambassador and the nerondoids was there too!!! Ahajaja, impresive.

I feel homesick time to time.
Maybe the main diference is that i move from my country (Venezuela) to Spain and we have the same idiom (spanish). But everything is diferent for me.

Looks very posh inside. I've been to the British Embassy twice but wasn't allowed anywhere near the inner sanctum!

One good thing about the "UK-Japan 2008" thing is that WowWow (a Sky TV channel) have been airing more British TV shows this year. Currently enjoying "The IT Crowd"!

I'm from England and now live in the USA, have been here going on 11 years now, and occasionally I do get homesick, its become more so lately than it has, not quite sure why, maybe its partly because I've been talking to old friend from Uni and school more, or maybe I've just had enough and want to go back.

Danny, you must be the most famous otaku ever, getting invited by the British ambassador. So what does the near future hold for our champion?

Oh yeah, I don't get homesick since ive been living here for some time and am pretty much used to it.

When I lived in the middle east for a year, even though it was an American Base, I was definitely homesick for anywhere in the USA. Probably because it felt like being in prison in the middle of a desert. Ireland and Korea didn't make me feel homesick though when I was there for a few years each.

"Have not been back to the UK for a while now and the more time I spent in the residence, the more I started to feel a homesick - homesick for a visit but not to live as I love it here in Tokyo."

-Honestly, it may sound odd, but I feel the same way (except I live in Toronto area).I'd rather live here than come back living to Ukraine. Even though Ive been here only a few years, I feel I'd want to move out of here. It does sound odd, but I cant do anything about it.
