dannychoo.com on CNN

So the filming that I mentioned in A Week in Tokyo 23 and the Japanese Girls article was for CNN - the feature went out today at 8AM JST and is being broadcasted throughout the day.
I also just got mail from Kyung Lah telling me that its the most viewed video at cnn.com today ^o^
The feature is about myself, dannychoo.com and my line of work. You can see the full res at CNN Online or the low res YouTube video below.
What I may not have mentioned before was that CNN filmed me at work in the Good Smile offices too. Table full O figures = always fun meetings = difficult to concentrate sometimes ^^;
Hector - my Chief Technologist with Kyung Lah and the CNN crew at Shibuya.
Some of the Good Smile team, Kyung Lah and CNN crew at the Good Smile offices.
The feature starts off at Shibuya but was the last thing to be filmed.
T'was the day I shot Kung Fu Trooper. I recently moved my iMovie08 archives from an external HD to a network HD and dont know how to get iMovie to recognize the changes = one of the reasons why I'm behind with the Trooping vids of late orz.
Will soon stick up the "As seen on CNN" logo on the welcome page soon ^^;

I also notice a lot of incremental traffic after the broadcast - if you have just arrived from CNN then welcome! You may first want to check out the Japan Portal, Figure Portal, or read more about my IT background which includes Amazon and Microsoft in my profile.
Then they mention "my other title" - "son of Jimmy Choo." This broadcast is the first to officially mention that Jimmy is my dad.
Folks who watch Sex and the City or have partners who do watch it may get a headache at the mention of my dads name ^^;
CNN sent their London crew to my dads studio to get a few words from him. He will be in Tokyo giving speeches for the British Council next month so I will hook up with him after many years.
As you can see from the last photos I've had with him - I have not seen him for ages ^^;
LOL at what he says about me dressing up like one of them ^^;
Didn't get to watch any of the clips prior to it going live.
Many many moons ago back in Marble Arch.
Ah... those metal frame silver glasses ^^;
Hmmmm. So this is how I'm going to go bald then ^^;
Kyung Lah in my office taking a look at my Postbed Machine - a special sewing machine for making shoes and accessories. I initially got it because I wanted to make some holsters but ended up using it exclusively for making Stormtrooper and Vader parts ^^;
Taking a look at a pair I made when I was back in the UK a few years ago.
Hmmm, as I type this I realize that I can nearly touch type ^^; Still have a long way to go though.
At the GSC offices looking at some yummies.
LOL at how they edited in my "mmmmm"'s ^^;
This was the day when I took pics of Unity Mei whose pics where first published on dannychoo.com ^^
Kyoka Midarezaki getting her eyes done.
Still in the GSC sculpting chamber.
At the GSC office in mid meeting.
Looking at a very early build of the Japanese GSC site.
Just realized that there were some strange icons that I used for QA purposes ^^;
If you can guess the one second from right (the brownish one) then you deserve a prize ^^;
Mikatan and I going over the CMS for Mirai Gaia.
Then we cover dannychoo.com.
The CNN broadcast was just one of the reasons for the Gateway renewal ^^;
I was working on the new detail pages yesterday which I wanted to get out before the broadcast but didn't make it in time - will try to do that later on today.
I guess its like cleaning up before guests come.
This is a big milestone for dannychoo.com and I would like to thank all of you for your continued support. This journey that I've decided to take would not be as much fun without you all.

Which brings me to ask that question again - how long have you been a reader for? I ask this question to decide what features go on the site as I don't want to stuff content down users throats.

Everytime I ask this question I notice that as readership increases, It looks like a large percentage of readers have been reading for less than six months. Some folks move on, some take a break.
Going over dannychoo.com with Kyung Lah.
Good thing there were no ecchi news items that day ^^;
There were concerns that some people may get the impression that my accomplishments were thanks to my dad but I don't feel that is the case as I took a completely different path.
This report also clearly shows how I decided to follow my passion and head for Japan without any financial support from my dad.

The easy route is "take financial support and start shoe business in Japan using my dads name."
The difficult, more challenging and fun route was "take my own savings and head to the land of the rising sun to fulfill my dreams."
And they also cover the previous videos too.
As for whether I'm going to take over my dads business - highly unlikely as I'm pretty happy running my startup right now. Business is great and have never been happier on my life - only to seem to be happier as each day passes ^^;

But I am keen on making accessories and if I ever get some spare time then I would love to make some.
The next broadcast is G4TV which only focuses on Tokyo Dance Trooper. The broadcast after that will be...
And some behind the scenes of the filming.
First time here?
If you are new here, you may want to keep up with more of the same via RSS or Danny's other networks. (dont show again)

Haha, So it was CNN Danny.  Quite the accomplishment.  I knew about your Dad being Jimmy Choo for quite some time now, just never really thought much about it.  After all I'm not really into Women's shoes. ^^;

Congrats on the success you made so far, and here's hoping to more continued success. I know you said you had a bit of a rough time growing up, but it seems that luck has been going good for you and your family! I look forward to watching Dannychoo.com grow with you! Heres to many more Panchira shots in the future! Cheers!

Congratulations again Danny, thought your first CNN appearance was big, but this one takes the cake. ^^ always thought it was great how you remained self effacing even amidst all your achievements. hope Mirai inc get more business from the CNN article. ^^
With regards to the question I think I’ve been around since 2005. The PG Strike Gundam days, hard to check via comments since I started out as a lurker. Lol
Btw I like the tie on the stormtrooper armour, have you tried wearing that during formal events? ^^

What can I say D? You're the king... of geeks, LoL (CNN's words, not mine). From one lone voice across the sea it may not mean much, but I'm proud of ya buddy. Hope this extra exposure brings even more opportunities your way. Good to see daddy choo is happy for his son. Our boy is all grown up... *punches Danny in the arm* OK, enough of that, get back to work!

That's really cool. Plus didn't know your father was a shoe designer too. That's really awesome!

How I wish I want to be as successful as you. I'll look up to you as a role model that is successful outside in Japan. Maybe my future kids can write about you! ^^

Congratulations to you Danny! I saw this earlier after watching the "net room" clip on cnn.com, and was like, "Dancing stormtrooper? ...OMG Danny's on CNN again!?" Hope this coverage brings lots of good fortune your way. :D

Despite my account's registered date, I started becoming a regular reader around late August 2007.  I'm not sure why it took me so long to sign up. ^^;

Come to think of it, didn't you mention here that your parents didn't know about your figure hobby?: http://www.dannychoo.com/detail/mac/eng/image/5917/Parents,+Partners+and+your+Figures.html Do they know now after all this coverage? :P

I chance upon that video the same way and looking at the photos I realised it might be really strange for CNN viewers to see so many female anime figures; even on the sewing machine. For non-readers of this site might think they belongs to either Danny's daughter or girlfriend(not wife, dun ask me why).

I must say, I've never been a fan of those type of figures before too, until now... Danny has made me want to get some Good Smile products too.

I never put two and two together about your name and your famous father's name...I guess I assumed "Danny Choo" was an alias, since what led me here was videos of you dancing as a stormtrooper. I just figured you went to great lengths to conceal your identity.

Congratulations on the CNN piece and the boost of traffic/readership that will bring. I sincerely hope I will someday manage to run into you dancing on the streets of Tokyo. Better yet, take the show on the road and dance in Kansai sometime!

For readers that realized Danny's success till date was never rely on his father financial support & had chosen to achieve everything all by himself & within his own strength, this is what makes Danny Choo highly remarkable.
It is our utmost pleasure seeing DC.com growth since we arrived to this wonderful community ;-)

OMG! I JUST saw that report on TV a couple hours ago while I was eating dinner. I totally freaked out when I saw it, and my sister was like "Uh...whoa, he's the son of Jimmy Choo?!". It was actually the reason why I decided to finally registered on the site after lurking for a few years. I figured no one else had mentioned it and I'd try and get to the cake first, but lo and behold, I can't upload anything because I haven't been registered long enough and don't have enough comment posts. XD

Anyway, congrats! I thought that was totally awesome and was an absolute surprise to see while at the dinner table!

So it was CNN, eh! Congrats, Danny. That looks like an amazing CNN report. Unfortunately I would've loved to see that on TV but I guess I missed it, haha! I like how they referred to you as the 'KING OF GEEKS'. LOL! So many achievements there, I'm quite happy for you. :) And thanks for being our inspiration and role model.

Just hearing the pages-views & usernumber makes me go *wohoo* everytime. I wonder if there are lots of new memebers now ^_^

I'm around here since ~one and a half year, registered since May '08 and DC is the startpage of my first "Start-tab".

I've not been reading long, only about 3 or 4 months but I've loved coming to the site. Sometimes if I want to check the site before heading off to bed I'll spend a lot more time than I wanted checking through the Previoud articles and articles being read now at the bottom of the page.
I wanted to see your dad's shop when I was down in London in July but I didn't have the time.

hmmm I started lurking here since i think as early as 2004 when everyone still had those super robot and gundam avatars, but of course i didnt really register until later on. I still remember i found this site when i was searching for gundam news on google and since then i was hooked Lol. I guess its because it was my first time being exposed to a blog like this where it not only covers anime/manga otaku culture but also other interesting aspects of japan. Looking back it never ceases to amaze me in how much you much you have accomplished over the years with the site and your career as a whole. Like most users here. you're truly our idol and hope we really do see you on Time magazine in the future. Keep up the good work danny and FIGHT OH! =p

I'm a long time lurker around dc.com. i've been here since dec06-jan07, so i'd say 1-2 years really, but i didn't sign up until early this year.
I still remember being bored on sunday arvo's and backtracking all of dannys posts till the beginning. Boy, you were posting no more than 2-3 times a week!

Great to see your site grow through these years!

haha! That's very cool. Saw the puchi blurb saying you were on CNN and I was like huh? Checked CNN channel but it was showing some other thing, and ended up youtubing it. Should have known to check CNN.com first!

congrats on everything man. Checking Dannychoo.com didn't become a daily thing for me for a long time since I joined. Checked daily when I first discovered the site, then it tapered off for a number of months and only checked a few times every couple weeks... Now I'm back to checking it daily though after having narrowly missed the opportunity to work with you and gsc on the translations >< Now I keep my eyes peeled everyday for any other opportunities lol.

In the meantime, still searching for my passion ><

either way, labelling you as the king of geeks is almost an insult. You are way beyond a geek danny. No geek would even dare to venture beyond his comfort zone and set out to accomplish the stuff you have, much less dress up as a trooper and parade around shibuya..

ok scratch the last point, way too many geeks do that all the time.

First the internet, now CNN next the UNIVERSE! (sorry just had to say that ^^)

Congratulations is in order, omedetou gozaimasu. Always follow your passions no matter where it leads you. It is what I believe.

Since I am in between jobs I have been a regular viewer of your site. I finally registered as a user back in August 2008. I can not remember when I first encountered your site. It must have been more that four years. I stated self studying Japanese back in 2003. Did your site exist back then? Every now and then I ran into your site during my searches of Japanese language and culture.

Back then, I never bookmarked your site since I kept my distance from anime to a minimum. I knew it would be an addiction that would spread to collecting anime figures. I have done the beanie babies, Star Wars EP1 figures, and now comes the anime figs.

There is a certain enjoyment having Figma, Nendoroid, and etc. All it matters that it places a smile on my face.

Congrats on the CNN cover danny, I am at a school computer right now so I cant view your video without bothering 20 people around me but I will definitely give it a watch once I am home. It is great that you did what you did on your own and not relying on your father, that is something to admire. To be perfectly honest I had no idea who Jimmy Choo was (I am a guy...not into women shoes...unlike some guys). I recently read up about him though because of an article from Mimi's blog.

Again congrats man.

Holy snaps, congratulations Danny, another great CNN feature. You do the otaku community proud. Hope for the best for you! Keep up the great work as always.

As for my reading status, I lurked for like 6 months prior to my registration. I did take a break from logging in and commenting but I would still visit via rss feeds over 9,000 times daily. Your site is my main anime/figure/Japan/culture/everything/news site lol.

Have been a reader for almost a year+. Me thinks it was back in Aug-Sept 07.

Anyways, the CNN site doesn't seem to be loading for me now =(. Dunno whether its my internet connection or their server going bonkers due to the massive traffic ^_^

CNN, wow. I watched this last night after that underemployment article you linked. Very cool.

And just to prove I'm a nerd, I think this: "Jimmy Choo is Danny Choo's dad!" rather than the other way around. XD

Glad to see you getting all the recognition Danny. Glad to see your dad understands your direction in life. I wish I could say the same for my dad. I may sound like I'm complaining a lot lately, but I'm happy as always to see you get recognition for hard work. I started reading and visiting before I left Florida so it has been almost 4 and a half years here enjoying the ride, having fun and reminding myself of where I need to be. Always glad to see you are having fun too! Don't get too comfortable my friend, for some of us are on our way to challenge the king! Well at least share in the fun... ^o^

Nice CNN article Danny!
Haveing seen this, what's especially noteworthy I think in light of your articles that motive and spurr people on to make something of their life by doing something they're passionate about yet also with the wisdom to try and seek sufficient financial strength by doing what you like is that it seems you could have taken an 'easier' or more guided approach with more backing by walking in your father's footsteps or use his support. But if as you say you arrived where you are today by your own strength and on your own two feet that's certainly inspirational. ^^

Danny, I'm really glad to see you prove to the world that nerd culture is not necessarily unprofessional!!! The fact that CNN (who is usually more concerned about international disaster than anything entertaining) took the time to do this piece on your lifestyle and accomplishments really brought a smile to my day. Thanks for the hard work and dedication to your passions, I know all of us readers really appreciate having something fun and dynamic to look forward to reading each day.

 From the first time i stumbled onto your site last spring/summer, i knew i was onto something special. After reading about your life, education, jobs, and philosophies on life, i had already found answers to questions i had been asking myself for a long time. Most of the answers were simple, but i had to hear it from the right person for it sink in.

   Just stop and think for a moment of all the people you've inspired with your words and actions! Of all the culture and entertainment you've brought into people's lives who by chance visited your site and found something very special. Brings tears to my eyes, but in a happy way.

  But everyone else gets a huge THANKS from me as well. For i have found myriads of useful links, anime, figures, ideas for photography, blogging, etc from this community. I must now celebrate all the beauty in life with a nice cold beer!

(sorry for being long-winded, but i really do mean it all sincerely)

I actually did not know you were the son of Jimmy Choo. I figured you might be related, but not that close. Interesting fact to know.
I've been here a while (Not as long as some) and even in the time I've been here, the site has changed a lot. Keep up the good work, and we'll be here.

Awesome as usual Danny, I did find some irony in the fact that the entire article is about "how you walk on your own two feet, without a nip nor dime from your old man" and yet the article blurb about you is "Jimmy Choo's Son" lol.

I've been visiting this site for quite some time, well over a year, I think two. A Gundam web search got me here, and I remember the layout was really basic. I Have only recently started posting.

That CNN piece is cool. I'm glad to see you are getting more exposure. Can't wait to see the G4 appearance. While I'm watching it, I can point to the screen, and say "Hey! I post on that guy's site."

I did not know your father was famous, furthermore, I really had no idea who Jimmy Choo even was, before watching that CNN video. ^_^; I guess I don't pay much attention to women's shoes... It's kind of like a double surprise, for me at least.

Great article. I hope to have time to watch the CNN story later. I'm intrigued. I like the new article page layout as well, but would prefer to see the articles being read now etc on here. I think that's where you get people to stay here longer, it works for me! Also, no partner advertisements? It feels a bit empty without something else, but I don't usually click through to your partner ads because I'm primarily here for Gundam and Japan related articles and less for the figures.

Congratulations Danny. Again, you're furthering yourself to a higher icon for Otakus and geeks in general. Congratulation Danny! I always know you will hit something bigger one day, but on CNN, wow. Thats quite an accomplishment you got there. My respect to you.
I knew you mention working with your family in shoe making, but I did not expect it to be the infamous Jimmy Choo.
Still I greatly respect you for your achievement, and on pursuing your dream by yourself, with the hard way.

I did not know that Danny was related to Jimmy Choo.

Also, since it's my first time hearing Danny speak English, I wanted to remark that his accent is really unique ! Hearing British-Accented English spoken with a Japanese accent is very different and not somethign I heard before. I've heard Japanese people speaking English, and americans speaking english with a japanese accent. It was really interesting.

The site will become even more popular now because of this feature on CNN. I was suprised it was in English, for some reason I assumed it would be Japanese CNN? Haha CNN probably doesn't even really exist in Japan.

Anyway congratulations Danny! Awesome video. The shoes you've designed definitely appears to be wearable. I guess it was never made into production? What was the process you had to create it?

Haha. Wow. It didn't exactly cross my mind that your father was Jimmy Choo.

It came as a surprise to me that your dad's THE Jimmy Choo. Though your achievements are totally independent of your dad, i guess you can say that he at least passed on the Choo gene of possessing natural talent and creativity lol. Anyway knowing your dad's the famous designer didn't change my view of you at all. You worked hard to get where you are now, and we are all proud (and jealous :D) of you lol. Kudos Danny!

Anyway, I find the CNN report quite inspiring, going to a foreign country and thriving in it is really no small feat. I have been following your site for sometime now and it has entertained me much.

It really shows success is possible if you have passion for it. Oh yes, I'm going to chase an otaku career as that is my passion!

Congratulations on the major milestone achievement, Danny.
I've been a reader of your web portal for about 3 years now. To get a better count of the new/current readers, can't you just download the list of the ip address from the visitors and compared it month by month (or year by year) to get a better accurate statistics? I'm not a computer techie, but I figure there should be a way to verify if a user is new or not.
Also, I'm glad that you didn't ask your Dad for money. This is what you called as "Self made fortune" =D

Entertaining bit on CNN dude, congrats. Is it true that you didn't ask for any support from your folks? Pretty awesome to have such perseverance and determination to blaze your own path. Most of the youth today should learn from your example... It's both sad and pathetic that the youngsters today can't stand on their own two feet and expect everything to be handed to them.

Congrats on the CNN feature. =) I saw it on ANN.
I was really surprised to find out Jimmy Choo is your dad! I've been to the Jimmy Choo store in Vegas before. The shoes are so gorgeous (and way out of my price range, haha.)
As for the poll, I've read your blog before... maybe a year or two ago (2006?) I never read it regularly, so I don't want to say I've been around for those 2 years. >_>;;
