A Week in Tokyo 24

Been one of the busiest weeks so far and this is how I felt like yesterday night - absolutely knackered!
If you have not seen it yet, check out the Japan Public Sleeping article. Thanks to Hector for taking this pic.
After a packed weekend of Chara Hobby, the week started off at the Good Smile offices for filming and pre-launch meetings of the English Good Smile site.
Quick Japanese lesson - the Japanese use the term "MTG" as a short form for "MeeTinG." Only first came across that term when I started to work for Microsoft Japan.
Occasionally got time in the lounge to open the new boxes of figures that appear.
The beverage is hot milk coffee and this is what happens when you leave the milk in the microwave for too long - it bubbles up and goes all over the gaff.
Katsu lunch set - about 680 yen. Mikuru in ripped sailor fuku with big eyes showing - priceless (literally ^^;)
A load of furniture thrown out awaiting pickup.
The Lovely Tsukasa joins me for some Kaisen don with a bowl of Udon on the side. 900 yen.
Nice (small foldable) Bike.
We be eating at home occasionally served by by Mikuru-chan.
I do try to drop everything and go with wifey for a few rounds of badminton. This is the town gym. 200 yen each for a few hours. Are you the sporting type and get to the gym every now and then?
No we didn't use Tsukasa as an extra shuttlecock ^^;
One of the activities that I devote time to is cleaning up - the pack of liquid on the right is table polish refill for the spray container on the left.

Figures need to be dusted down every few days or they not only get dusty, they accumulate some sort of oil (?) not sure whether its from the humid climate or from the paint.

I also find it difficult to work in a mess which is another reason why I like to clean up a lot.
During the process, I would also throw away stuff I don't want so that I can easily find the things that I do want which is another thing that helps me save time.

My parents have a habit of hoarding crap around their house which they will never use. As I get older, I realize that I acquire the "will keep just in case it comes in handy one day" and then end up with a ton of crap ^^;

What I try to do is keep something that I think I may need and if I come across it within the next x months without touching it then it goes in the bin/gets recycled.

Do you or your parents hoard stuff around the house and find it difficult to throw things out?
Bistro lunch - 1,000 yen.
On the road to somewhere I cant remember ^^;
The Wonfes Yuki version - she looks great without her cardigan too. Pasta lunch is 990 yen.
Extreme heavy rain in Tokyo. Very humid too. Yuk.
But then the heavens apologize after with crisp sunny mornings.
Mid week table. Hmmmm. Definitely too many figures ^^;
Tsukasa and Tempura don. 680 yen.
Then towards the end of the week was G4TV filming in Shibuya with Kevin and Olivia.
I've opened up the MBP so many times now that I can now replace the drive in less than 10 mins ^^;
Steps on how to open and replace the drive in the Mac Life 3 article.
Do you dabble in opening up your machines or leave it to somebody else?
Been a Metal Gear Solid player since the PS1 version over ten years ago. Only just got my hands on MGS4 as I knew it would be just sitting there if I got it earlier.

Not sure what it is but there is something missing from the game. Graphics are nice but nowhere near as smooth as Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

I usually play for just over an hour while peeking at the clock from time to time - I would only play for as long as I feel that I earned it. An extremely hard day at work would mean I give myself more time. If I feel that I didn't accomplish as much as I wanted then play time would be shorter ^^;

Whats the longest you have played a game for in one session?
Tsukasa n Sushi.
Discovered that I had one too many Maxtor drives - quickly went and ordered a few TB worth of drives to replace them before the Maxtor's decide to suddenly die - one of them did die just after I replaced it ^^; I chose 5400 RPM Western Digital for backups and 7200 RPM Hitachi for my main drives.

The most popular drives over here are Toshiba, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Samsung and Western Digital.
Now got a 320 SATA 7200RPM Drive in the MBP which is cloned by SuperDuper to an external 2.5" drive daily. Cant afford down time with my work so the external clone will get me up n running immediately if I boot from it.

Also take backups with TimeMachine but restoration will take a few hours - a few hours that I wont have in the event of a disk crash an hour before a presentation.
Setting up more external drives for backups. I keep two copies of everything and irrecoverable data is encrypted and stored on Amazon S3.
Am also stuck with a few IDE cases - need to look for IDE to SATA adapters.
A few Maxtor drives - currently functional but don't want to risk wasting time when they suddenly go doo dah. Will destroy and dispose.
Just a few bottles of Circus Water left ^^;
Near the end of the week is a party held by Good Smile and Max Factory. Attendees are game manufacturers, anime and other figure folks. Will cover this in another article.
The office this morning. The ceiling Ikea lights died. When I took them back, they said that a few Ikea items are not compatible with the Japanese climate. Due to the humidity, certain lights fail within a short time and shelves drop as the wood expands. Have you had bad experiences with Ikea stuff?
Made a tough decision to store some of the figures away. I felt that having too many made it difficult to appreciate the beauty of them as they were bunched in a corner.
I'm sure this will change after the next batch appear though ^^;

Speaking of figures, Danny's Corner over at the Good Smile site will soon have stuff before its released so keep em peeled.
The figure shelves next to me get a reshuffle too.
Those Queens Blade bases are so darn big. Need to think about how to make my own figure bases.
The figures finally take over the Shelf O Gundams. Kept my fave 3 on display.
The GFF Gundams are currently in a box and will take em out when we buy another house.
All article photos get uploaded automatically to my Flickr account but photos in my news items don't because of the way the system is built. From now on I will stash some of the previous photos from my news items at the end of my Week in Tokyo articles.

Honestly, I can't fathom why they made it so difficult to change a hard drive. It shouldn't take 10 minutes to change one. Ironically, Hitachi makes one of the worst drives(travelstar) but they are the most popular.

You mean for the Mac Book Pro? Maybe cuz they are Apple products and there will be more seams or lines if it was accessible from the bottom ^^. I know notebooks where the HDDs are accessible from the bottom (ie. not having to take the keyboard apart)

Perhaps they're popular for the reason that chevy crapaliers and now chevy cobalts are so popular here, they're cheap? I mean both of those models of car are planned-for-recycling-before-being-built POS' but a lot of people still drive them.

I think he eats just as much as we do, only he takes pictures of them some times. If you think about it, (this is however, considering you eat three meals a day) at the end of the week you would of had 21 meals. I think its just that he has good food very often... I'm hungry now...

LOL that sleeping Stormtrooper picture is priceless!

I'm really amaze with the Japanese. They just throw their old appliances when they get a new one. Most Filipinos though keep it, sell it or repair it O_o

BTW that udon on the 6th picture looks EXTREMELY delicious! Also, badminton is the only sport I'm good at.

I have also experienced that oil build-up in my figures and wonder what they are and where they come from. I bet it's the humidity.

I do the same with the stuff I have. If I feel that they would be of use someday then I keep it. If I encounter it some months later and haven't used it during those times then I throw it away. My brother on the other hand keeps almost everything he gets his hands on like used ballpens, plastics, empty cans, etc -_-

"7200 RPM Hitachi for my main drives."
I think this is your problem Danny. If I recall correctly Hitachi started making drives when they bought IBM's hard drive plant. IBM's sucked, and coincidentally so do Hitachi's. Western digital Maxtor, and Fujitsu are o-k, but the best by far are Seagate drives. Also, IMO for reliability try to get lower storage drives with less platters. 1TB drives might be nice but I don't think they'll be as reliable as 2 well established 500GB drives.

Maxtor is horrible when it comes to hard drives, and there is nothing wrong with a 1TB drive. The only thing you run into is a slower seek time. Two drives increases the chance for failures which is more then I would want to deal with.

Funny enough I've heard from some computer stores that Seagate can have a high tendency to break down. They've even nicknamed it as "死極" (dying to extremity?). Maxtor (which generates a lot of heat) too was reported to have similar problems, but I suppose it depends on the luck, as some people have no problems with them for many years.
For cheap ones some consider Excelstor (but I doubt you'll go for that - no high speed). WD is not a bad choice though.

Oh I've opened up a can of worms here haven't I?

I think the confusion comes from the fact that Maxtor and Seagate merged. So I'm guessing you have to pay attention to where what drives come from where -that's always the case with electronics really. Either it's(it being maxtor/seagate) going to come from a maxtor plant(sucky) or seagate plant(good). I don't know the specifics but I'm with time I'm sure it'll reveal itself - just got to take the risk.

WD is pretty solid for a midrange product, but Hitachi? Hitachi, from what I hear, is mostly crap. :/

The advantage Seagate has though is their warranty, last time I checked it was at least 1 year more than any other drive on the market. Seagate purchasing Maxtor definitely confused things, though I'd still stay away from Maxtor lol.

My brother and I both use Seagate for our computers, we haven't had any problems in the last 2 years, mine still feels almost brand new.
For my second choice, I'd go with WD or Samsung.

I wouldn't want to swap something like data integrity for warranty. IMO, warranties offered by HDD companies are just gimmicks to attract customers. I mean hey, your HDD breaks down. Yeah, they will replace it for you but is your data or the HDD itself worth more? Just my 2 cents.

I prefer to go with Western Digital drives. They have served me well so far.

imho warranty not that worthed... the reason is, first you wont get ur data back when your harddisk corrupt as warranty just cover the hardware.
second all replacement harddisk is refurbish one, do you want take risk and using refurbish product? well somepeople might dun mind as long they working, but for me is no no... so warranty means nothing for me

regarding harddisk size... i prefer 500gb at best for daily usage... passive backup harddisk (backup all data every months) best with big storage... since you don't use hdd often, i think its reliability enough

for active backup harddisk, again i prefer 500gb size....or bigsize harddisk in RAID1
but for me since 1backup enough... then i use passive backup and RAID1 setting for workstation

actually hdd platter didn't effect hdd reliability whatsoever..
but you should think that u will lost more data with bigger size rather than smaller size

as for reliability
1st WD and Seagate just ok... no winner between them... but somehow i like WDRE series.
2nd Fujitsu... i dunno but fujitsu storage technology 1step behind WD and Seagate and fujitsu hdd price abit pricey compared to WD and Seagate... but indeed fujitsu product have good reliability
3rd Samsung

HDD that often get bad comment... infamous maxtor (i also experience same things... around 4 hdd get badsector after 1-2year of daily use)
hitachi... while i havent try hitachi myself, but hearing bad experience from other people enough for me to choose other hdd that have better review

I totally agree with Quentin. My Maxtors and Seagates both died, but my WD are still going strong. Wouldn't buy anything else now even though they are slightly pricer?
Anyone know how to dispose of harddrives properly? Recently found a full sized 4GB hard drive lying around which of course is absolutely useless at this point in time and I'm thinking of chucking it out.

I bought MGS4 and beat it on a friends borrowed PS3 in one week (though I really wanted to play it longer) ^_^;

As for parents having to much stuff, my mom keeps to many boxes up stairs that we can't even turn it into an office/bedroom like my dad wants. Seriously some really old boxes ^_^;

Man, now it's getting driven home that I *really* need to get an external harddrive. I can't backup squat on CD's anymore. I'll probably get the drives separate from the casing, though, so I can mod the case and make it all art nouveau prettyful. And then I'll probably still have a Figma hang out on it. =P

At any rate, a couple times I've played about 3 hours worth of a video game--once was finishing up Kingdom Hearts; that's got to be the longest span of no-save-point I've ever encountered. And then I might have played WoW that long with my mom, but I always feel kind of guilty after playing that long.

Danny, you need to take more pride in your Pack Rat side of yourself, I'm the same way. Every once in a while I do throw something out -- although very rare -- and when I find the need for it again, I just hate myself for getting rid of it.

You should really check out Uncharted: Drake's fortune on PS3 if you haven't, it's the best game this generation I've played yet. It's still at top for best console graphics this generation, even after MGS4 came out they said it was close but just not there yet. It has an awesome "indiana jones" style story, and amazing gameplay.

Because it is more reliable and they won't have as much business selling more drive to paroniod server operators?

I would choose Seagate over any other brands, but i do have failure on just a few days after installing it. That is probably some kind of consipracy theory...but what do i know...

I'm also very envious of your massive backup operations. I'd like to have more copies of my files, but I simply can't afford the hardware. : As it is, my most important files sit on my laptop, a desktop hard drive that's about to die, and a portable hard drive that's about to die. Some files are on just one of the three. ><

Longest game session for me would probably be close in the 17-24 hour range trying to get the Guise of the Deceiver in Everquest before they removed it from the game and replaced it with Guise of Deception, which could only be used by Rogues. Got it 3 hours before they brought the servers down to put in the patch to take it out.

Wow. that's a lot of backups you have there. How long does it take to clone an entire drive? Is there a windows equivalent of SuperDuper? Looks to me that SD is really easy to use and that's one of the things I'm finding hard to do with backing up my windows machine.

I probably average about 5 hours gaming in a good session, but when MMO's come into it, they can last a lot longer, and I forget to eat, drink and that kinda basic human need. Not a nice feeling by the end of the day ^_^

Just got Mercenaries 2, if anyone here loves a good action game, explosions, vehicles and general carnage I haven't played a better game for those features!!

hmm, yup i do tend to store items that i might not even see for some years. My room has a lot of such stuff. I'm now thinking of disposing a lot of things that i will never use. but many times times i've noticed that once i throw something out i feel like using it and go out and buy another :|
Are those water suddenly acquired too?
regarding hdds, i use seagate and HD since i noticed that these drives perform better in tropical and humid climates better than others (avg humidity here is about 95% always since i live near to sea ).

regarding the lights, i use cfl lamps which run for about 2 - 4 years max (avg. 6-8 hrs /day usage). And i am the sporting type (or used to be). i hardly get time now to play, and no sports centers here where i live. I was good at badminton, tennis and cricket. currently watching Prince of tennis, and feel like playing tennis very much.

I'm not sure I like the concept of replacing the drives due to age alone. My experience is that drive failures and age aren't that closely related. My dead drives died of the age of a week (mechanical failure... I suspect the factory screwed up), 3 years and 10 years. However I have way more drives that survived 3+ years.
My solution (besides backup) is to use raid. That way I can replace a dead drive without losing data (takes a whole day to add a new drive to a raid set for some reason).
If the hardware lacks raid 1 support then OSX supports software raid. I never lost data on a raid disk set. The only sideeffect is that all drives on a partition needs to start if it idles before you can access it and it starts one drive at a time.

LOL on those IKEA things not compatible with Japan weather. The only problem with IKEA stuff was my fault, one time I didn't have an ironing board and I was in a hurry so I used a small wodden table covered with blanket to iron my shirt. The heat from iron made some nasty bubbles on the table's surface, luckily it was a very cheap piece of furniture.
In a HardDrive business I tend to use Seagate disks, only one of them failed me and it was "kind" enough to warn me that it is going to breake down by making a loud noices. It was still on warranty so I got a brand new one in a couple of days and it was even a newer model. I don't really trust Western Digital, all my WD disk died eventually but I've heard that they made a huge progress and now their disks are very reliable.
As for the gaming time once againa I'm sucked to an online golf called Pangya (american Albatross18). I had more than a year break from playing and now I'm back again. I play Japanese version because they have brand new Season 4 updates when Albatross18 still runs on Season 3, not to mention that american servers are full of cheaters and hackers -_-'. I also got a chance to improve my Japanese reading and writing ^^.

Nice 'A Week in Tokyo' post as always, especially the food. One thing I regret about my stay in Japan last month is that I did not eat properly while I was there -_- Spent too much money at Comiket and went nearly broke but kept buying more stuffs and ended up saving food money instead... Next time I visit Japan, I'm gonna make sure to stash food money seperately and not gonna go starve again -_-

I think I'm the one who hoards too much stuffs in my family. My family recently moved to a new place and while they finished packing within a week, it took me nearly a month to pack my stuffs... We moved to a smaller place so I had to store away half of my stuffs in my friend's garage, it nearly killed me moving all that stuffs to there -_- And because of my recent trip to Japan, I still haven't unpack my stuffs and are unable sleep on my bed currently(all the boxes are on my bed right now).

I seriously need to either get my own place really soon or stop going to Japan when every Comiket comes around the corner T_T

I haven't played badminton for almost 2 years... it's good you still had the time to go play a few games.

I don't clean very much, but when I get into the cleaning mood, I will go non-stop until they job is done. Strange thing I found out... I tend to clean better late at night, like just before I go to bed. That's also the time when I actually throw more things out.
I'm one of those people who don't throw things out often... I've still got some things from my toddler days.

I like that long shelf across the wall, with all those circus water bottles on top. It looks like that shelf stretches along 2 sides of the room.

I wish I could control myself like you, I hate over-playing games... It's fun while you're playing but then at the end of the day, you look back... "Damn, what a waste of half a day". The longest period I've played a game would be about 16 hours... Those were back in those days when I played MMORPGs, I'm glad I don't play them anymore.

Reading the article last time made me realise I can fall asleep anywhere if I'm tired enough ^^; [work, couch, bus, train, in front of the comp, etc x_x;;]

My whole family are hoarders (including me), extremely frustrating especially as I like the minimalist look u_u~. Told myself I'm going to throw out half my room soon, but being in that sort of environment at home doesn't help orz...

I don't exercise much as I used to walk a lot, as I'm working from home now I've gotten lazy ^^;; I should get out that skipping rope I bought a while back ^^;;;

Answers: My mother is a terrible hoarder and will throw nothing away. I am a short-term hoarder as I'll keep some stuff for a while but will ruthlessly throw stuff out every few months - I definitely will never be as bad as my mother.

I build my own PC's all the time, as well as those of my friends who find out about my skills. I don't dare to delve into my games consoles, but if one ever broke out of warranty I'd probably crack it open.

For exercise I do Pilates once a week and do a short ride on the exercise bike at the gym. Walking briskly to and from the bus stop is most of my exercise though.

For safe data storage, the Drobo from US Robotics is on my wish list. In the meantime, I will rely on my Samsung drives. Very happy with their performance.

Nice post Danny, I find myself in need to do some exercises and being doing a little by myself every morning like a little running around the block but don't have much time either. And my dad likes to keep everything in a room and the room ends up full of crap we never use but he insists and keeping those stuff, but once every 6 months we do a little cleaning (usually me and my mom) and we throw most of the things out.

And if you need space for you figures you can always send them over, I wouldn't mind taking care of them. Also, Airi base is beyond huge!

this week in Tokyo looks more busy than usual indeed. glad you are enjoying work, however I really wish you get to spend some downtime as well. after all your health is certainly more important.
about the questions, my dad had this habit of throwing out unused stuff as do I. unfortunately my wife tends to keep stuff in case the can be used later on. I would sometimes secretly throw them away though. ^^;
about the poll question, I don't usually play that long. although I have to admit, I would sometimes download saved games or cheats just to see how the game ends. not enough time to dedicate and play the whole game through. ^^;

I could never sleep in public ._.;
Would expect people to run off with my stuff or other such things.
But then again, I'm slightly paranoid too...

It's nice that you keep yourself busy. I need to work harder and do more things. I think I'm wasting too much time...

I need to start exercising/doing sports. When I worked at the book store, I would get plenty of exercise walking around all day and lifting piles of books and games. But now I don't do so much anymore. I need to find some activity to do.

I recently moved back to my mum's for a few months to rest up a bit... found someone to take over my so-noisy-I-can't-sleep-there flat, but didn't manage to find another place in time x_x And moving means throwing away stuff. So in the past week or so I've probably thrown away 3~4 boxes worth of stuff, and I still have a bunch of boxes to go through. I'm forcing my mum to throw things away too, but she thinks it's very difficult... And if it's not out of the house quick enough, she's tempted to take back the things she wanted to throw out x_x;
I do tend to hoard -some- things... Like food; I'm like a squirrel, gather loads of food but forget I have them ._.; And drawing supplies too, I probably have enough erasers and leads to last me 5 years...

And, I'm much more of a game/squeenix otaku than an anime otaku, so yeah... I did play for more than 24 hours on a few occasions... usually when I start playing it's a 6~9 hours block though. But, I don't play every day mind you. Unless I just got a particularly interesting game...

And as far as throwing away stuff or whatnot, I am a total packrat. Recently I went through a bout of going through stuff that I don't use, or that I impulse bought on a whim and figured, "This will fetch some change," and then I ended up selling a giant river full of items on ebay. So far off of crap and anime stuff that I really didn't want anymore, I've made over $500. I used to keep all manner of items that I'd never use again, just for nostalgia value, like old games I'd never play again, DVDs I'd probably never watch again, books I'd never read again, etc, so I've started to thin the closet so to speak. Amazing, since I used to have the attitude of, "Wow, I can't believe someone would sell that NES game, I would never sell <Game X>!" I mean I do enjoy collecting stuff, and I've kept some things, but I'll be finished with school in the next year or two and I plan on moving to a certain island country in the East soon after via JET or something, so if all goes well I won't be back here often, ever again. And yeah, I don't want to have to return to clean my room. ^^;

i had a very nice halogen spotlight from ikea once... when suddenly the power supply died.
bad luck: ikea didn't sell the lamp any more. and the newer models all had larger ps units.
buying a new one from the manufacturer did't work either. they told me minimum sales volume was something like 2000 units (or 2000 euros)? anyway, ikea gave me a full refund, but the lamp i have now isn't as nice as the one before. :(

Oh man do my parents hoard stuff. We are up to our asses in trash. The only two clean rooms in the house are my bedroom and my lab room, which is where I work on electronics.
When ever a new HL2 game comes out I will sit down and try to play it start to finish set on hard right off the bat.
Oh, and Danny, if you ever want to get rid of some figures feel free to send them my way ;-)

The Miracle Boober in one of the pics caught my eye. What does it do exactly?

The game I played for 12 hours straight is surprisingly Dragon Quest 1. Started it up as soon as my parents left for work and packed it in as soon as they got back. (^_^;)

I've pulled out many 12 hour shifts of World of Warcraft back whenthe honor system was around. Had to alternate with a friend taking shifts just to hit rank 13...never made Grand Marshal though. Impossible with a job and other RL activities. But i regret all that, for it was a massive waste of time, and i wouldn't not recommend MMORPGs to anyone. Do something more productive with your time!

The longest I've ever played in a single season? Final Fantasy IX: 92 hours, 39 minutes and 19 seconds and 8 saves... It was like 6 years ago, when I had the "fever" (I had recently bought it at the time and was impatient). My mother got angry when she learnt that I "barely" slept those 4 days (it was Carnivals' holydays, so I was free from Friday to Tuesday, whoohoo!)... and she told me "You look like a ghost! Your face's green and your eyes red!". When I looked at me in a mirror, and I didn't have a green face, but really red eyes: I looked more like a demon or something XD I even scared myself *lol* Anyways, I really would like to post a shot with the mark, but I'm TOO lazy to look for the memory card AND the game XD

P.S: After that, I limited my gaming sessions to a maximun of 2 hours ^_^U

Nice first pic, it really depicts your 'tired but happy' aura. My parents tends to hoard and repair things. I also tend to hoard things but when I do a major clean-up inside my room, I throw all the unnecessary things I collected. About the playing time, if parents are around it's usually short(an hour or two); if not around I play around 5 - 6 hours(usually it's because of not noticing the time). In special cases especially with friends, I play around 8-11 hours.

Ugh cleaning figures every few days...I can only imagaine what would happen if you didn't I suppose. Mine are put into enclosed display cases and even only a door crack, the shelves get filled with dust after about a week... =S

?!?! at the ikea part, why sell a product in a market where theres a high rate of failure? But anyways, new lights look brighter, but the old ikea lights looked a lot cozier than these new ones. Maybe its just because I don't like "daylight" bulbs...

oh wow your brave. I was too chicken too replace the fan on my macbook pro that I took it to a shop to do it. They charged me $40 for the fan and $60 for service. And ironically they screwed up the left speaker so I had to take it back for them to fix. The hole reason for taking it their was to not mess something else up.... Luckily they took responsibility and fixed it for free but I had no computer for a week because of their screw up.

We bought a bookcase at IKEA about 2 yrs ago. When we got home and opened the box, the little bag with screws, etc was not included. Went back to the store with the receipt and the guy at the customer care desk just opened another box, took the screws from that other bookcase and gave them to us. Seemed odd that they didn't have extras, but that's what he did. Haven't really have problems with any other items.

My parents hoard like CRAZY!!! I think some of it might come from the idea of not wasting anything, and some is just from plain 'not letting go'. I inherited some of this, although I've gotten better at it over the years. When clean-up time comes, the first object/ item is always the hardest to throw out. But then once you've started, it gets easier and the next thing you know you have a bunch of space and you don't miss anything! =)
