It gives me great pleasure to announce the beta launch of the English Good Smile website at eng.goodsmile.info.
Furthermore, we have decided to announce this to dannychoo.com readers first ^o^

Some of you are helping me work with Good Smile doing the translations and I wanted to involve you again in getting your feedback which will shape the user experience at the new Good Smile site.
Launching the English version first was a strategic decision and the Japanese version will follow within the next few weeks. For now we have most of the products registered and translated into English.
You will also see something called Danny's Corner where I write exclusively for Good Smile - you will see more to-be-released goodies over there soon. If you are an RSS person then the feed is here. Also, if you have a better naming for that section then let me know ^^;
I'm also on Good Smile's International Strategy team with a mission to make their figures more widely available across the globe - keep your mince pies peeled for more info on this.

Many views on the site have grid/list switches which you can use to change the way items are displayed - the view changes without a page refresh and remembers your preference as long as you dont delete your cookies.

I saw from your previous comments that some of you delete your cookies after browsing and wondering how many of you do that and the reason. I never delete my cookies unless I'm debugging.

Oh and yes - the grid view switches look rather naff and will be changing them very soon.

The main feed for the site is here which will enable you to keep up with the latest figure releases.
While dannychoo.com is still running on an old version of Mirai Gaia, Good Smile gets the brand new spanking version. I do anticipate a few bugs here and there so if you spot any then leave a comment here or send me mail to [danny at goodsmile dot jp].
The new Good Smile website is running on Amazon EC2 instances - goodbye to physical servers that take weeks to order/install - an AMI (Amazon Machine Instance) can be created from an existing instance and booted up within a few seconds. Fresh AMI's can also be spawned and booted up automatically to cope with any spikes of traffic.
Amazon also recently launched Elastic Block Store enabling a permanent storage volume to be mounted onto an instance - great timing for the launch of the website.
The next things to add are product search, mobile versions, portal skinning, shipping date calendar, bread crumbs, drop down menus, related items, better category discovery, site map and general cleaning up of UI.
Up until now you had to go to other online stores for decent sized images - now we have them on the site. Not all are up but will be added over time.
Not incredibly happy with the image display and would prefer a nice jQuery plugin. If you have any ideas or suggestions then let me know.
I also want some sort of featured feed functionality too as I want to keep you involved. Stay tuned for more and I look forward to your feedback.

And if you are a blogger, it would mean a lot to me if you could mention the launch - will make sure to return the favor ^^

If you are new here, you may want to keep up with more of the same via RSS or Danny's other networks. (dont show again)

Mmmmmm, figures *drools*
Isn't it a bit to much like DC? That's probably because of the common platform right?
I'm looking forward to the expanding overseas part ^^

It is a nice theme indeed, very web2.0ish. which reminds me, can't posts have an edit sort of thingie? I know it would be a pain to implement, but it would avoid needless replies to make adendums to something said previously...

Looks like DC.com a lot indeed. With DC.com figure pictures on the hearder, same colors... well, not that it is a bad thing, but at least for me, this is a bit disturbing ^^;
Have to get used to it.

Great news that GSC is expanding their reach overseas.
Looking forward to what the site brings!

Hmm...I also noticed Alter's not listed on the english gsc site? Do they prefer to work individually? I noticed Alter is listed on gsc's site, but hasn't been updated with new products since 2007, whereas Alter's own site is updated with every new release...

I keep thinking I can comment on the GSC site. ^^;

I take it GSC uses its own team of japanese product description writers, thus the need for translators. Maybe future products on the international site can have native english speakers for more natural sounding description, and commerical appeal? Just a thought.

Good stuff Danny. Hope your friendship and partnership with GS continues to grown and prosper.

I like the high quality images when I click on the individual figures. But when I click the row of thumbnail below the main image it took quite a while to load maybe can preload the thumbnail images in memory when one access the page? The transitions are nice too, very flash-like without being flash itself. SEO reasons again? ^^;

Have you heard of Lightbox Danny? It's incredibly popular on galleries, it's the first result on google when you type in 'lightbox'. Not to mention very fast!

There are also a lot of variations on it, some allow descriptions, there are also different ways of navigating in between images.

The thing I'd like to see most on that website is SHOPPING! I'd like to be able to buy direct from the website. It's hard enough to get stuff here in Australia as it is (even as a wholesaler like me) when you don't read Japanese.

Loving it so far!

I agree with you there. It'd be nice if we can buy directly from GSC itself. Also, would it be possible to put in a pre-order date so that we'd know when it'll be available for pre-order? just so people won't miss out on limited figure runs and etc.

Wow Thats a very nice site layout and design, perhaps u should think about making your engine purchasable for other companies or individuals who might want to use it.

Oh btw I personally like the way those little thumbnails pop up, its nicely done although a little slow but I am sure you can work out the kinks.

This is great news!

Forgive my ingnorance, but is it possible to order the figurines from the site or is it only like a catalog of what the companies produce and well still have to hunt down our figurines elsewhere? I didnt venture very far into the Japanese site in the past since I dont speak the language and I dont have enough knowledge and experience to know if that is how GoodSmile does things...

hmm that's a good question.

Will the english site have access to the online shop? Or just have information on figures? A small amount of figures have been goodsmile shop exclusive (lineage 2 dark elf and WF exclusives to name a few), so will this sort of information be introduced on the english page? Or would they stay on the japanese end of things?

So the Japanese site has a shop? I was looking through the English site and I clicked on Manufacturers and then on Others and the Lineage 2 Female Dark Elf came up (I found it by accident) so I guess that figurine is on the English site. Its very nice, too... I couldnt find the Konata Haruhi cosplay version Figma, though.

BTW, I just tested this site with Google Chrome... I can even post with it (something I cant do on lolifox for some reason... the reply button just loads forever...)

Congrats on the website Danny... glad to see your business is growing.

My main comment mostly has to do with the design and color scheme. For my taste it's a little too much like your site if you ask me... don't get me wrong, I like your design and it works well with your content, but for Good Smile its a little too utilitarian for me. Also, the colors are an exact match of your site. I'd like to see some other colors used instead.

hmm now that you mention it, I noticed Goodsmile's own colors are orange and white mostly, with some light blue too haha

Maybe instead of the green as found on Danny's site, it could be changed to a pastel purple color? I see that purple color in one of the update/news tags on the left side of the japanese goodsmile page. A minor change, but a little less identical?

The new GSC website looks great. Danny, when are you going to implement this version of Mirai Gaia to your own site? I'm sure DC.com will look great with this version as well.

Danny's corner is a great idea since you can link GSC site to your website and vice-versa.

I'll try to post this in my blog when I get back home from work.

Pharmacist, Accountant to be!
This may be a stupid suggestion, but I too have found that it looks too similar to DC.com. I'm not sure if it is intentional but I think it maybe necessary to leave some sort of distinct difference. I understand GSC wants a similar theme and image to the DC since they liked it.

What do you think of a font change? A simple change to another similar font may give them that slight difference between the sites? Helvetica anyone? Haha

Just my 2cents.

congrats on the launch. sure feels great to be able to showcase your hard work to the whole world isn't it? ^^;

just a suggestion, the sentence structure of the figure description doesn't sound natural. I also find that some of the sentences are too long with many commas.

If accuracy in the translation was an ideal, that description read fine to me.
The wordiness alone prompted this assumption in lieu of my inability to verify it to be true.

It can be shorter if concise corporate language were wanted (specs section already mentions scale), but I'm of the opinion that the consumer leisurely reads.

How's this?

Introducing Miku Hatsune, idol of the entire virtual world and mascot of the Vocaloid song creation software. Due to it's incredible popularity, this realistic 1/8 scale figure of Miku has a reprint on it's way not even one month after it's original run!

Based on an original illustration by the character's designer KEI, special care has been taken in preserving every enchanting detail. From Miku's trademark twin ponytails fluttering about her to her hand on her headset, Miku seem ready to burst into song at any moment.

Took me about 10mins? xD;;

the 2nd paragraph is good. the 1st paragraph can be further shorten though. for example,

Introducing Miku Hatsune, idol of the virtual world and mascot of the Vocaloid singing software. Due to it's incredible popularity, this realistic 1/8 scale figure has a reprint barely one month after it's original run!

a good translation doesn't need to translate everything word for word. for the above example, redundant words can be omitted or rephrased to make the the sentence sounds more smooth. ^^;

Aww~ comments don't nest under.

It was just an attempt, didn't try too hard with replacing many words, I simply intended to change things around hehe~

I like your paragraph though, good example of how text can go through multiple edits =D

Agree with Gordon. Descriptions should sound more natural as I commented earlier. Not to knock the translators; They did a great job with the workload. Perhaps future descriptions could go thru a final editor before publishing.

Read through some of them as well and some of them do sound a bit wordy with lots of commas.

Some other things I noticed:
- Japanese text next to the "Product name" entry are all in hiragana. I think some are originally katakana (Shana's name, minor example), and for some of the entries, there's no spacing (Neuro Nendoroid).
- I think the name for the Kara no Kyoukai character is Shiki Ryougi, not Ryuugi as in the description

Just a couple things I took note of when lookin through a few of the figures.

The Japanese text is a pronunciation key, thats why it's all in hiragana. Even if the name itself is normally written in katakana or kanji, it's just there to show the pronunciation.

hmm gotcha. Was just kinda weird to me seeing it all in hiragana lol. I understood that there was no kanji involved for the sake of reading it out, but some names and stuff just stood out. Just like how if an entire sentence is in hiragana without kanji or other formatting/punctuation, it makes it a bit harder/awkward to read. Though of course these aren't sentences, but I'm just making an example.

Although, if somebody wanted to search for more pictures or other info perhaps, copy pasting something like ( ひゅーまんめいじ ) wouldn't grab a lot of results, as opposed to ( ヒューマンメイジ ). Or, from the Shana entry below, ( ばーじょん ) instead of ( バージョン ) It may be confusing for those who are still learning japanese, and they may mistake what they see as the proper way to display the name. In addition, the reader isn't called to attention about what exactly it is they are pronouncing. For example:

1) Nendoroid Shana, Burning Hair and Eyes ver. ⇒ Shana Enpatsu Shakugan Version Nendoroid

2) Human Mage ⇒ Human Mage

3) Miku Hatsune ⇒ Hatsune Miku

I understand that the kanji was replaced with hiragana, but without the differentiation between hiragana and katakana, it may or may not confuse. I think that the japanese could serve two purposes -- in addition to being a a simple pronunciation guide, at the same time it can also be somewhat informative. There may not be a huge audience that will pay attention to the japanese bit, but for those that do, it may be helpful, even if it's just a little bit.

I dunno...maybe I am overthinking things a bit?

A friend of mine helped me look at this description, and I concluded it was overly smoothened in interpretation, so therefore possibly inaccurate:
http://eng.goodsmile.info/detail/eng/259/Nendoroid+Shana%2C+Burning+Hair+and+Eyes+Ver..html

Like regular nendoroids, red-haired & red eyes Shana comes with 3 faces, and the green caption on the image points toward the separate, limited, black-haired Shana. The translation should instead mention that parts are interchangeable between them.

We feel a good procedure is to have the translators help verify each others' work.

Its weird to read your introduction on the website.Reads like the newspaper fropm yesterday for DC users^^ Its useful for newbs tough.
And your always so humble Danny....

I like the Design of the website and its not a bad thing that it looks alot like DC.It helps alot to navigate through the different pages. Its a joy to finally browse GSCs site and to understand everything.Since theyre launching an international portal i guess were able to order international soon...yay!

I hope to find time to blog about this but i dont really think youll need our help to spread the word about these news ^^

Id also add the Figure Price in US Dollar.Thats the currency most people are familiar with. Its easier to estimate the value via Dollar than calculate from yen to their currency

I don't agree with that. US Dollar is fluctuating more than Yen lastly. A double conversor USDollar/Euro would be nice. But for reference better Yen than USDollar.

Congratulations on the launch! Good to hear that you will be helping on increasing the international availability of GSC's products.
I know I've mentioned this elsewhere before, but I had a hard time trying to get figma Fate last month due to the fact that the distributor has decided not to import them officially to Hong Kong, causing huge inflations and the market went crazy. figma Saber suffered the same problem before, and I hope it would be the last of it. I'm sure that you will help solving such problems via the readers' voices. I have great trust in you~

One thing that I noticed on the site especially on each figure section. The price on the figure includes tax, we overseas buyers don't pay that kind of tax when we purchase our figures there, so what I recommend is putting both prices like Alter has with tax and without tax.

By the way the site looks interesting enough

I don't mind the thematic similarity. Functionally, the interface reminds of a file manager, which I've noticed more and more in your site's evolution. It's been established in visual display and navigation. My thoughts are, "the apple does not fall far from the tree," and "you do not patent the obvious" :>

jQuery looks promising, if you do add in preloading, like others have said. I imagine you haven't looked into using Highslide JS because of its licensing. I've seen a few sites pick it up to avoid lightbox, but not very many.

wow! it's seriously impressive.

funny, yesterday was the first time i ever visited gsc's website - and it was for a completely unrelated reason. i bought an awesome figure a while ago and tried to find out who made it. got to goodsmile.jp via some online fig shop that had pictures.

heading to the all new and refurbished eng.goodsmile.info now to compare. :)

Makes me really want to work in Good Smile now ^_^. Either that or Max Factory, do you think Max Factory wants to expand to the Western side as well. I see a lot of retail store owners who sell figurines have a bit of Revoltech, but its severely over priced. May be this expansion can help lower the price (I've seen prices at $30CAN)

so we were right yesterday. Well done danny and good luck in your new role. Now all we need is an international presence for companies who really need it, like volks.

Not sure if I would want a job in the figure business. I like to keep work and pleasure separate.

At first, I thought it would be fantastic too, but then think about it. If, for example, you were one of the painters at goodsmile, then you would be surrounded by figures and get to paint prototypes of unreleased kits, which is awesome, but then if you painted kits at home as a hobby, you're sort of working at home!!! Without pay!!!!

Karma perhaps?

i guess the common consensus is the similarity to dc.com, which is fine by me, since to the international crowd, good smile is kinda synonymous with danny, or mikuru figma ^_^.

to be honest, i have always thought english versions of japanese sites suffer from being outdated and bland when compared to their japanese counterparts. Anime series dvd sites come to mind.
while the new site makes an effort to provide the same experience as that of the japanese site, i find myself to be leaning towards the japanese version, in terms of content as well as layout.
However, if the intention of the international version differs from that of the japanese one, then i can understand the practicality of the layout.

oh and i was half expecting a mirai mark to show up on those mature figurines! bring mirai back!

Congrats! Danny.

Been to the site earlier on at work and after a couple off randomness I found that the only thing that been on my mind is the image popup plugin. Personally I would go for no animation at all then the slow zoom animation and closing each popup to view the next one is slow. ^^ gasp.. got to say it LOL.

Too bad there isn't that many jQuery image gallery (yet!) compare to the other JS libraries like prototype. I found some jQuery plugins that are rather interesting:

GALLERIA (Image gallery)
http://devkick.com/lab/galleria/

SHADOWBOX (very flexible lightbox, complex, animations, gallery, large photo, fast)
http://mjijackson.com/shadowbox/

PRETTYPHOTO (light, gallery, animation, fast)
http://leandrovieira.com/projects/jquery/lightbox/

FACEBOX (simple barebone lightbox)
http://famspam.com/facebox

But so far, the best lightbox clone I have seen is from Lightview (http://www.nickstakenburg.com/projects/lightview/). But you need to pay for it and it is only on prototype.

Hope the best for you and your new venture! ^^

The green dates under the thumbnails are very confusing. This is the date you added the item to the catalog online? that seems to be irrelevant material. putting the release date there would be better since most of the 'added' dates are not in order of when the figure was released, they seem to jump around. but if that is a restriction of how the forum is designed, oh well.

also, an out of production sticker would be nice. sure, everyone likes looking at older figures but if there is no chance in *** of being able to purchase one other than an auction site, that just frustrates people.

This is good. This is very good. To finally have a figure manufacturer reaching out like this, and to think if it wasn't for the Gaia platform and your influence, it wouldn't be happening. I can't even count the amount of times I visited sites like good smile, alter etc and wished I could read what was going on - this is kind of a small dream come true.

Mechanics wise, the layout is very nice - then again I like the general layout of dannychoo.com to begin with so the throwback to it gives it a since of warm familiarity. Colors are nice, translations seem a tad wonky (as Gordon already pointed out) and could probably use a sort of editor/proofreader polish to it to give it a less engrish-y zest at times, but damn nice work overall.

Awesome. Seriously awesome.

First of all, this is an awesome and good job , Danny. This is like a dream comes true to be able know what's going on a figure manufacture site ^^.

I like the similarity with your own website and the colour scheme fits perfectly with GSC logo so the website totally represents their corporate image.

Others probably already mentioned this, the item description(translation) seems little bit weird. There are unnecessary commas here and there in my opinion. I might be wrong though since English is not my mother tongue.

Danny's Corner is a good name because I use similar one (Saku's afk corner) XD. Or how about Danny's Box ?

Lastly, I already blogged about the launch: http://www.sakuafk.com/2008/09/04/good-smile-company-new-website/ to spread the joy all over the world lol

Looking for work again
The Bishojo section should be broken up into months like the other categories. I also noticed that the figures listed in the Bishojo section are not in chronological order...
For Example:
Kasumi Yashiro is dated 2008/09/03 but she falls between Nasca dated 2008/08/26 and Shiki Ryougi Garannodou dated 2008/08/11 found on URL: http://eng.goodsmile.info/page/all/eng/product/category/bishojo/all/all/all/1.html

Overall, I am really loving the English release of the Good Smile Company web site! It runs very smoothly except for the additional photos in the gallery for each figure which has already been commented on ^_^

When these figures are available for overseas shipping, it would be nice to have the price of the figure listed in USD as well as Japanese Yen ;-)

Oh, by the way, the enlarged images run kinda slow on the Mac version of Safari.

You know, it's funny you posted this today; my computer imaging teacher had us go through websites we liked yesterday. One of them featured enlarged images like what you're using for GSC, but used some Javascript thing called Lightbook (or is it Litebook? He didn't spell it. ^^; ). Anyway, that ran pretty fast, so if you're not happy with what you've got you might consider looking into that.

As for clearing my cookies, I would prefer to, but some cookies like the one that contains the authorization signature for my web banking lead to a PITA if deleted. If I lose that one I have to request email of an authorization number that I need to type in so my computer can be loaded with a secret cookie. And, the authorization number doesn't always work the first time especially since I use a dual WAN router on two different ISP's which makes some security programs suspicious of my connection. Don't even ask about the headache I get from message groups like this.

I am liking the RSS feed. However, if I do have a suggestion for the feed, maybe add JST at the end of times of their posting. JST, or Japan Standard Time, could help those out that are starting to learn about Japan and about figures. I also like the fact the type of figuring, like figma or nendoroid, is mentioned in the title.

My suggestion for the website is having an FAQ about the figurine types could help out. Plus, I think your section name could be "Danny's Desk," since every time we see a new figure, it is always on your desk. But I sometimes think Danny's Corner is alluding to your initials of DC. I have not faced any bugs so far, but eventually, if we do face a bug, who do we report it to?

Grats on this venture, Danny.

About the JST - it wont pass the feed standards set by the WC3 I dont think.
FAQ is a good idea.

Maybe here is a compromise; on the FAQ page, we can put a note saying all postings on the website are in JST and that will be fine with me. Something is better than nothing.

srry double post... not really sure if anyone else said it already, but when you're viewing "All Items" after clicking more at the bottom of the Latest Releases column, in grid format, any item on the bottom row with more than 2 rows of text gets overlapped by the page numbers

This is great. Although the color scheme and all is a little similar to DC, its not really much that can be done since those are the GSC's colors. One thing though, does GSC sell replacement Nendoroid stands? My stand for Nendoroid Haruhi broke and any place I looked doesn't have replacements. Are there such things?

I just went through the whole website...
I'll just add to what other commenters already said: It'd be nice to have some reading content to the website, though the pictures are already great the way they are.

By "reading content" I mean.. FAQs, explanation on each series (stuff like Why "nendoroid"?), interviews, the tour videos, and some other stuff.

I'll make a big nendoroid post to my blog very soon and publish info about the Goodsmile Copany website too.
Figures are still too small in Brazil, mainly because it's too expensive to have them around these parts. But I'm shure that with more exposition and more websites like this new one from GoodSmile, it won't take long for it to become a new trend. :D

I noticed for some reason if i have the browser window smaller there isn't a horizontal scroll bar? I'm using firefox and there's certainly a horizontal scroll bar for Dannychoo.com, anyone else getting this?

So I'm browsing through the site some more and I find that I like how you can sort it out by release dates and series ^.^ I got to see ALL the nendoroids!!! woO! WOO!!

Some people already mentioned to maybe add a faq? oh and I noticed you have a link to the japanese site on the top right, but the japanese site doesn't have one to the english yet :O

It looks so much like this site. The color scheme is much of the same. The font. The bar at the top. The first impression was bad just because it felt 'recycled' but then after thinking about it a bit it seemed more like your personality as a designer, rather than laziness or something. It looks extremely user-friendly and the layout makes alot of sense to me, in sequence. Congrats !~ No, I hardly ever clear cookies. Generally I don't really care.

Good stuff Danny, really happy for you :D! I'm starting my figure collection with 2 good smile figures... wish they would release them a bit faster haha ^^.

Have you though about using thickbox for the images? I use it on my site, works much better than lightbox, and it's built using jQuery. Also it doesn't need to wait for the page to load completely before executing (an annoyance that lightbox has).

This may be too much effort to do, but it would be great to see the production status of the figures. For example, if the figure was retired, limited edition, etc., it would be noted in the description. Perhaps a small graphic icon would display the production status...

I have to say that it is a wonderful site.

Is the highlight for the dates really short to contain the text size of the date, or it because of chrome?

I hope this comment isn't missed, but I wanted to let you know that the bootleg/imitation section of GSC's website is being well received in the hobby community. It is very useful and we hope that it will be updated, as there are still many nendoroids that need to be added.

Are there any plans to buy directly from them? I buy from the sites you recommend, but more often than not I stumble with a "discontinued" or "out of stock" item, and I don't wanna risk my money buying from dubious sites or people.

There are at least 10 figurines from Good Smile that are a bit old (either years or months) that I want to get my hands on, but can't because of the stated above issue.

I don't really think it would help your case if you wanted sold out figures. The reason sold out/discontinued figures can't be restocked is usually because the supplier has stopped production for resale. If you see a figure you really want, I recommend preordering it so that you know you'll have it when it comes out. All you can really do for old figures is hunt them down in online shops or hope a legit one pops up on ebay..
