You voted for dannychoo.com being the best figurine blog so it will continue to be my destiny to bring you even more exclusive yummy goodies direct from the makers.
It gives me great pleasure in bringing you the first detailed shots to be published of Good Smile Company's Unity Mei.
But just before I continue, I need to say "(c) 2008ユニゾンシフト /SOFTPAL Inc."^^;

Was at the Good Smile offices today going over usual business and got special permission from Unison Shift to let me take pics of Unity Mei from the eroge Unity Marriage.
This is the actual sculpt that took the sculptor about 2 months to complete.
Once sculpting is complete, the figure is sprayed with a primer. Its sanded down and then sprayed again. The primer not only helps bring up any dust or other unwanted stuff, it also helps the paint to stick.
The face is done last and is the most difficult part to paint. The face is currently the same color as the putty used for sculpting and will be primed too.
A shot of the sculptors desk.
Another reason why I got special permission to take photos is because I was actually being filmed by a TV crew - more on that later.
If you enjoyed the figures from Good Smile up until now, you are going to be in for a treat - the line of up of their figures will have you discharging all types of liquids from your body - blood from your nose, saliva from yer mouth... I think there's another type of liquid but cant remember what it could be.
Obligatory low angle shot.
Like these cute alien type things on her back.
And this is what she will look like painted. Hopefully will be painted for next weeks Wonder Festival. I don't have a release date for you yet but will let you know.

Original illustration is done by Ozawa Akifumi [織澤あきふみ] who does Chu Chu Idol too.
You can see more of her at the official page and download a load of banners, fliers, shop display material, wallpaper too.
She is described as a cool slender android Meganekko who likes asking ecchi things. When the need arises, she transforms from being Kazami Mei into Unity Mei.
Flier for the eroge. Hmmmm. Big eyes.
While talking to Mikatan, she said that she had the impression that gaijin-san (you guys n gals) prefer figures with big eyes. Not sure whether thats true or not so I thought I'd ask you.
The sculptor works from a few illustrations. He then has to imagine what the rest looks like for angles that don't show in the illustration.
If you want a detailed tour of the goodsmile offices, check the previous GSC Office Tour article or see my video tour below.
And just before I leave you, I need to say "(c) 2008ユニゾンシフト /SOFTPAL Inc." just one more time ^^;

I got more goodies for you - some of it is awaiting approval from the license holder but some of it is good to go - more tomorrow ^o^/~~~

You're right. "The face is done last and is the most difficult part to paint. The face is currently the same color as the putty used for sculpting and will be primed too." So the putty is greenish yellow and has not been primed... ^___^

Good seeing such a delicate and detailed figure in the making process. I haven't got any big figures but I'd sure like big eyes if I had any big ones.

Great insight to the figure development process, thanks Danny:)
For me, it doesn't matter if the figure has big eyes or not. But what is important to me, is that the figure resembles the actual character.

figures with big eyes are a bonus
i mainly like figures:
1) which anime or manga or game that i am a fan of
2) i have a complex for girls with big swords (but i don't really those with guns)
3) have special feature will often make me curious to obtain them (example soft chest =p)
4) finally i also like cute figures like nendoroids

I wouldn't worry too much about that. As you can see from Danny's photo (http://www.dannychoo.com/slide/eng/toys/20715/photo/Unity+Mei/), there is clearly a metal rod sticking out of her foot, which will give strength to the figure.

That billowing cape/skirt might have to be made from ABS though, or its unsupported weight will cause it to lean downwards. If GSC had taken the proper precautions, I think it shouldn't lean.

I'll wait to see how the painted prototype looks like, though GSC paint jobs shouldn't disappoint. Hopefully.

It doesn't matter if they have big "eyes", what matters to me is that if the figure is really good and cute, the "eyes" are just an extra. I wonder who prefer more big eyes, us westerns or the japanese, everything I see about anime and it's goodies always have two or more big eyes girls not to mention the series of Ikkitousen, Sekirei and others

The eye sizes (both pairs) of a figure should be approximate to the character it is based on, unless it's a Nendoroid.

nice figure - thanks for sharing!

As for the poll, I wouldn't buy any figure with supersized eyes. I rather the eyes be small and delicate, rather than big and 'sparkling' (which makes them look abit too cute for my liking)

Nice exclusive! Cool looking figure - i like ones in dynamic poses with lots of clothy stuff going on.
Call me odd, but i actually prefer figures unpainted! I just love seeing all the detail on them, and you can make it out a lot better when its uncoloured.
Nice to see the sculptor has the max factory kasumi on his/her desk! Its one of my all-time favourite figures.

i don't get it... are we talking about eyes or breasts (boobs, tits, whatever you like to call them ;))? if you really meant the eyes, then i don't care about their size - if we're talking about the figure's breast-size then i have to say that there has to be some kind of relation to the rest of the body. it's not always "the bigger the better" :>

Whoa.  That thing is awesome! I'm normally more drawn to articulated figures like the Figmas, but she's so cool I just might cave in and get her. ^^;

If you mean "upper" eyes, I don't care so long as the character doesn't look vapid and dazed, but avoiding that gets progressively harder the larger the eyes are.

As for "lower" eyes, again, I'm not particular, but they can't go much past what's likely and physically possible. If it tips past the physically possible range, they then shoot past "sexy" into "freakin' creepy" for me, especially if they start suffering from weird physics like volleyball boobs or that wet sandbag look. And I second Asuki in that they should be logically proportionate to the rest of the figure's physique-- no waifs with randomly gigantic implant eyes, please.

I answered "Yes" to the Poll...although I am a girl, I will most likely buy figures with bigger 'eyes' because...I dunno xD;; I would only buy a flat one if I really liked that character I guess...or if it's from Moetan lol.

Eyes don't really matter to me,sometimes they make them out of proportion for the character,like a young girl with F-cups.Eyes are merely an add on,to get a good stare,but what really matters is the pose,paintwork,and sculpt.

Thanks for taking these pics and the time to post them up, Danny. I'm not a great sculptor or builder, but I always find these sorts of tours inspirational. Just looking at the workspace (or the in-progress items) gives me a lot of inspiration for how I should proceed.

As for figures, I don't have a real preference for bust size- I think I look more for who the character is, and what I think of the sculpt. I really liked the look of the Max Factory Sakaki Mizuki, for example.

Where I currently am in North America, I see more preference for the more mature-looking characters at the local comic book and manga stores, which might be why bustier characters are purchased more (as the more mature looking charas tend to be a bit bustier).

If they made a Lina Inverse, however, I expect we'd see lots of North American purchases of a more flat-chested, er, well-proportioned character.

Actually, I know many people who do like big eyes, and I wouldn't say that the stereotype/generalisation is too far off the mark.

But personally, I prefer them smaller. Not flat, but shapely and pert.

Here as an example, rather than Orihime, I prefer the eyes on Soifon. Although, that's just preference I wouldn't say no to any of them, but I don't particularly collect 2D girl illustrations with big eyes.

Voted yes, as looking around my collection I do feel my favourites include mostly large eyed girls. Though that's not to say that smaller can't be very nice too. Unity Mei looks to be shaping up very nicely, I love purple too, so with that color scheme she'd be very tempting.

I don't mind either, large or small, as long as they fit the body-type.

Although, I dislike figures where the eyes are waaay too enormous. Like, "A living person could not support such weight" is too big.

Well most of my collection has girls with big eyes, but I don't really mind as long as it looks good though...first thing I thought when I saw that green face was that it was going to hurl...

So, we're talking about eyes again eh. On figures, they don't really matter to me. I prioritize on build quality and how nice the figure turned out :) Besides, it's not always beneficial to have top heavy figures, they might fall off shelves.

I like seeing in a sculptor's workspace, it's like getting a sneak peak into the set of a movie or something.

Pretty figurine, hope it's not a leaner. ^_^;;;

thanks for reminding me- I need to find the time to look into why figures lean (the material), but have not had the time =/.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. I always look for a fantastically sculpted figure- bust size really isn't that important. Max Factory, from what I have seen has some good stuff. When I get the money, I may try importing one of their figures. I like what I see and I like this figure. I am hard to convince to buy an expensive figure.

I like big eyes figures if it's tasteful, but I dont feel that most of them are ^^;

I actually dont like the purple color scheme. I think this figure would look awesome in White / Black

Big eyes? doesn't really matter. I think the poll answers that. heheh! I just want a figure that's amazingly sculpted and detailed. Same with the cast off feature really, cast off doesn't really make or break my decision in figure buying. :D

That's a great figure but I feel it might lean on me. And it looks delicate.

That is a nice figure!!!

Hey Danny, just to add to your poll "Do you prefer figures with big eyes?" - to me in a figure, what i care the most is:
 1. over all - how close the figure looks like the real character...i have seen bad figures out
    there... >_<
 2. the quality of the paint/color - no misplaced colors & good color combination
 3. the small detail and how well done they are - no seams
 4. "big eyes" don’t really matter - what it is important is the pose the figure is in!HUGE PLUS
 5. if the figure doesn't come with a base... it has to be balanced(able to stand by it self)

what do you care the most in a figure that make you anxious to get it???

Doesn't matter to me, but must be at least proportionate with the rest of the body :)

Love her kimono pattern, I think that draws me to her :D

oh my god .... *and continues to stare at the figure* ... if it looks this good without being painted and all, I can't image how great the end product will be. Danny, I really can't wait for the rest of the figures lined up by Max Factory... I really envy you....let me know if you ever need a sidekick ^_^

Big eyes on figures aren't that important; it should be for the overall quality. I mean, SADER had the eyes, but the overall... *barf*

I like just about all sizes of eyes. I do have to say I don't really care of the exaggerated sizes though...

Anyway, this is figure is great! I'm looking forward to the release of this figure. It's always interesting to see the creation process and I find myself wanting to give it a try. Hopefully in the future when my wife and I return to Japan.

It doesn't matter if one cares for eroge or not. With the quality of craftsmanship and money that goes into figures like this it is obvious that eroge is where the industry is at this time.

Great looking figure! the paint job looks like it's going to be great too.

I don't realy care about eyes. I mostly look at the other qualities of figures when I buy/look at them.
