Nice Pictures Danny. I can tell from your pics that You eat out a lot don't ya. Its interesting how the prices for some of your things such as the sushi and pizza were cheaper than the small sandwich. Just thinking that's kinda odd is all. Oh and in your first pictures, are those little girls looking at you? I can just imagine what they are thinking about a guy taking pictures of them.
quick question danny.. how much does it cost to fill your tank every week? mine is about AUD$80... i think that's roughly around 83,000 yen with current xchange rate ;__________;
yen conversion must be broke - thats over 800 USD per week! I dont go out in the car that often but when I fill her up then its only 3000 yen or so.
WHOOPS my bad too many zeros there ^^" make that 8300 yen
damn i usually cn squeeze by with some 100 yen ramen every few days xD
thought u were talking about food *embarrassed* xD
Fuel has been fluctuating between 145 yen and lately up to 165 yen per litre ..... down near where i work anyway, so actually still cheaper than Australia ... and considering the much shorter distance you need to drive here it's a lot cheaper.
Hmm... I have a feeling fuel is always high in the Osaka area. It was already in the high 160 to mid 170 yen last month.
Dang, that's expensive! And I thought $4 a gallon over here was bad...
Where I live (UK), it's absolutely insane. It's roughly £1.00 per litre at my nearest petrol station, which is roughly $9.00 per gallon. $4.00 seems like a bargain to me. ^^;
Oh yes, $4 is definitely a bargain, we pay about $8 per gallon here in Sweden.
Hmm, that's about what I'm paying in Canada at the moment, allowing for the vagaries of currency conversion. I drive a subcompact and use public transit where I can, so that keeps costs down.
All the folks over here in the US are freaking out about how much fuel costs now. In Chicago it's about $4.65 USD per gallon, which is about ¥132 JPY per litre. So the cost of fuel in the US is finally starting to catch up to the rest of the world, and everyone is upset. I guess people suddenly can't afford to fill up their Hummers and Cadillac Escalades (insanely-huge houses-on-wheels). Go figure.
good coverage as usual. Looking at these pictures gives me motivation to continue studying kanji ^^; So I'll say...thanks for the motivation.
Awesome sum up as usual Danny! I truly love these weekly expeditions into the heart of Japan. Seeing as I broke my leg and saved over three grand on my New Zealand Adventure Holiday I think I shall, and be rightly inspired to, venture into Tokyo this coming fall!
i wanted to ask this for sometime now, but have no idea who to ask. Wat are those blank and white thingy on japanese sites, newspaper and magazines? like the one in Yui Aragaki's burogu, below the モバイルブログはこちら.. What does it do and how does it work? Care to answer that? Thx ^_^;;; I have seen a few commercials about that..it shows some guy taking the black and white grids with their japanese-only mobile phone, and after that, they are able to see some videos or some other things...not sure though T___T;;
Its a QR code - scan it with a Japanese mobile phone and you can read her mobile site.
For more information on QR codes check out... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code And to create your own check out... http://qrcode.kaywa.com/
we have it in singapore as well. it's call zapcode. not very popular here though.
You can download the Kaywa Reader for phones which are Java enabled (not only limited to Japanese phones). My phone's camera sux so I can't get it to read small QR codes x_x. Sites like Play-Asia have them. You can have links, text, phone number embedded in them.
I notice that whenever there's younger people in your pictures they always seem excited about being on camera XD. I LOVE spicy food, but usually my stomache hurts real bad the next day. Back when I was only 13 or so I messed my stomach up real bad but kept trying to eat spicy food, still do, but my stomach is all better.
I remember having Pasta in Japan before, and I was quite surprised how bad it was. Tasted like Chunky Ketchup on Noodles instead of Italian food, but it could of just been the restaurant I was at (was somewhere in Kyoto). I remember Johnathans being pretty good though. Something I noticed in one of your pictures though, Why is there 3 nozzles at the gas pump? I've never seen more than 2, which is normally just Gasoline and Diesel.
Really? it normally goes up to 4 over here
I must see that hana yori dango movie XD
i love when folks tell me " u won't make it" or " u shouldnt do that" or " give up and get a normal job" cos that gives me more fuel to succeed in what i want to do...gambate!!
Food looks great!!! I´m impressed with your workplace. Never imagined I could explode on a Gas Station
thought u said had sushi on Mikuru.. now THAT would be fun :D
Lots of Japanese and misc. food, glad I just ate! It seems like as you grow older, you just don't have enough time to finish the games you buy T_T I guess that's why people play online RPG where there's no specific end, you just do party play, raid some dungeons, expansion comes out with more materials and you go doing more of the same stuffs with no end -_- I remember the back in the days I would save my money to buy games like Final Fantasy IV and Axelay and would play them until I beat them and was so happy with the feeling of acomplishment. I can hardly feel like that as of late...
Nice coverage Danny. I get to know more about japan thx to you. Life expense in japan is really high, i can get spaghetti x3 here for the same spaghetti x1 price in japan.
Tako Yaki, Tako Yaki. I tried Tako Yaki from a place on Chuo Dori in Akihabara the last time I was in Tokyo. I thought the Octopus Balls themselves weren't too bad but the guy piled on some kind of dried fish flakes on them as he was handing them to me. I was...not a fan. I'll be in Tokyo in early October and I think I'll give them another try, minus the fish flakes. What are those flakes called anyway?
Those are katsuo-bushi. Dried, flaked bonito fish. I love 'em-- especially on tako-yaki! Mmmm!!
Long post is long... forgot the first question. Ok... we don't do number of accidents and death because it would require an animated version to keep the numbers updated. If I'm not mistaken, car accidents are the number one reason of death in Brazil. It's been proven that most of the accidents are caused by wreckless driving, followed by DUI. About games... too many of them nowadays. I used to complete all games when I was a kid, but just can't nowadays. I usually only play them a little, have some fun, and then try the next one. But I did finish some. Portal, CoD4... Rocket Slime on the DS and one funny and unknown RPG for the PSP... forgot the name. Gurumin. Let's see... no Tescos in Brazil. I also had pasta today... but it was gnocci. Finally, we have the same taste for graffiti Danny. Take a peek at the one I got last week here: http://xspblog.com/2008/07/19/liberdade-1707-animefriends-2008/
great food coverage okonomiyaki reminds me of horikita maki in teppan shoujo akane takoyaki is one of my fav - always get a couple when i go to jusco (1 ball around 40 yen). is jusco huge over there? is part of aeon right? as for games, its 50% normally finish it. for those i cannot finish - i usually end up cheating (cheat codes or hex edit it) and there are those you can never finish - cause they have no ending (e.g GTA, the Sims, bla la la la )
Jusco!! I love Jusco. I don't mind hanging out there for hours! I eat tako-yaki there too! :-)
I have a lot of unfinished games... Too many to count... Hey Danny, mind telling me where these food places are? I want to know where when I head to Japan and eat this kind of food?
BIG Hana Yori Dango fan, but unless SARS gets their hands on it i will prolly have to sit and wait (which means DVD release). Need to buy all the DVDs of it sometime, and Zettai Kareshi, awesome shows.
If the game gets boring or repetitive, it is likely that it is left unfinished, not to mention if it was bad in game system. Ah getting figures many months before they are out must be good.
The Pizza with the 1/2 boiled egg doesn't look too bad at all.
Dammit.. that sushi lunch looks good. Used to have lunch at around 1:30pm, but like you said, most of the lunch sets are gone. been eating at 11:30 ever since. mmm... tako yaki... Now why in god's name would they want to display the casualties and injuries in traffic related accidents?
Danny, I always wondered how would someone without a Japanese name get their Hanko done? Katakana? I've seen those being sold for like 100 yen but they only come with Japanese surnames. Also isn't there a higher chance of forgery? since all you need is to buy a 100 yen seal.
I wondered about that too - though since I'm Chinese I reckon I'd just get one with the same kanji. And I always figured hanko were custom...this is all just me guessing though. That hanko post is a good idea, Danny. xP
Chinese folks usually get their Chinese Kanji. Folks with no kanji name make a Katakana one. Or they may choose Ateji - Kanji which sounds like their name.
I wonder if it's possible for a name to happen to be both actually Japanese & not at the same time? My name is legally Tamara and I hear that it's a real Japanese name w/ kanji (I have it somewhere). I'd have no trouble with the Hanko though, now that I got married and have a Japanese last name anyhow :P
lol my katakana name apparantly looks kind of long for those little round things my name means lord =(^_^)= Meow great post danny with some good photos.
Mmmm… Are you sure about that? I do not think you can use anything that is not on your Alien Registration Card (i.e romaji or katakana if you have a western name).
alien registration card ? you mean visa ? well i could make something up using my names letters no ? anyway living in japan is way to far for me to reach yet. plus i seem to skrew up job applications alot lol bye bye for now
No, I mean Alien Registration Card. The visa gets you in the country, but then you'll have to register to get your ID card, stating, amng others, your address in Japan
Looking at this post made me hungry lol. Especially the pizza. Time to grab some lunch! Were most of the photos taken using the Sigma lens? If so it's pretty sweet. I'm currently scouting my options for a lens for my D70.
Danny you need to give us some recommendation on restaurants in Tokyo when we visit. Why not do a Danny's favorite restaurant post. BTW I am definitely guilty of not finishing games I bought (I finished less than half of them). I am still not done with Super Mario Galaxy.
I love your food pix danny LOVE LOVE LOVE lol potato and tomato spaghetti, oiishi desuka? I want to try making that sometime ^^ Half boiled egg on pizza? omg!!! XD
oh boy i have so many unfinished games :( Mostly rpgs...Star Ocean 3, FFX-2, FFXII... GTA4, Ninja Gaiden Sigma... Second play through of Chrono Cross and FFVII. I start but I never finish. and lol at that building that you never noticed. It ninja'd itself and crept up right behind you.
I really like that first photo Danny. It's a great photo to play around with in Photoshop. ^^ Seen traffic accident signs in state police offices when I was young. Usually during the summer after holidays such as Labor Day when many Americans travel by car. New hanko stamp is one of the first things my wife and I bought... I never realized that often Japanese have more than one. I like egg on pizza. My wife also puts tuna fish on pizza. Sure I knew that... Haven't you ever notices the line of ball-less octopus coming out of takoyaki shops? ^^; Poor things are on the short side, so it's easy to miss them... ^^;
houses in tokyo... not to mention windows at places with no sunlight.
I've never had no born chicken on pizza. Was that actually good? Flavor seems kinda mismatched. Use to eat alot
