iPhone Japan

The iPhone 3G went on sale today at the Softbank flagship store in Omotesando/Harajuku.
Many of my comrades have been out there waiting since 4PM and I just had to go along to egg them on.
Saw the queues from the train extending from the store towards Shibuya!
Decided to go and see how far the queue stretched.
Folks who live in Tokyo may recognize this as the road that leads to Shibuya.
More pics of queue (including some funny ones) at Kirainet.
The queue goes on forever. I didn't go for the opening but Akihabara News did and you can see their coverage here.
And ever. That's Roy in shorts - another Japan blogger who is currently on hiatus.
Some of the queue was for today - and some of it for tomorrow.
Is the iPhone 3 G out in your region today? Will you be lining up for one?
These folks barely made it for today's batch of phones.
View from the bridge at Harajuku.
At Omotesando where the queue continues.
A load of media folks still in the area.
Meeting up with some (pedo?) bear comrades.
These folks will get their phones probably within the next hour.
Inside the Softbank store - full O media folks.
Met a load of IT folks. Gadget events are great for networking ^^;
Could not imagine lining up over night for an iPhone. The longest I ever lined up for something in Japan was for one of the Harry Potter movies many years ago - three hours.

While booking theater tickets online was normal outside of Japan, folks over here had to go to the cinema and just line up. Whats the longest you have ever waited in line and what for?
Being interviewed by Kyung Lah of CNN.
Met up with a comrade from Next House Properties.
Taking a break from trooping outside the Softbank store.
This is the begginning of the queue - the sign says "today's processing is FINISHED."
White iPhone get?!
Going over a live broadcast to be made in a few mins.
Kyung Lah goes on first and then I go on after.
All of a sudden, a swarm of school girls appear.
Captions for this photo being collected in this news item.
When the iPhone launch was announced in Japan, the media started to bash the iPhone immediately saying that it wouldn't sell at all. Many English language Japan bloggers posted "surveys" on how most Japanese don't want an iPhone.

The queues today prove that the Japanese do indeed want iPhones. And its not just the queues here but all over Tokyo.

The makers believe that they know what Japanese consumers want - which is everything. This is the reason why Japanese phones are thick and stuffed with TV's, 7 mega pixel cameras, games, electric money etc etc. They all look the same and have mingy keyboards.

The Japanese want something simple and easy to use.

Would you rather have a Japanese phone stuffed with "everything" or an iPhone?
Some Japanese Phones for you to look at.
Another cosplayer on the scene - dressed as a guard.
I still owe you the guitar/rock trooper video but decided to shoot another one - this time to "Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn & John.
Met up with some comrades at Gizmodo Japan.
This is Ichiru who waited since 6PM yesterday - he got his iPhone at about 10AM. His post up at Gizmodo.
A lady plays around with her new toy.
More "Yong Folks" in front of the store.
Very warm today! I has headache from the heat at the moment ^^;
Grabbing some liquids before going to my next appointment.
"Are you that dancing Stormtrooper in Tokyo?"
UPDATE: Video footage of the queues below.
Folks who subscribe to CNN can see me "dancing" on CNN Asia or at their website here.
UPDATE: Thanks to Koshiko for extracting the file! Low res YouTube version below.

The iPhone is slick but having Suica built into your phone is a nice feature. As long as your phone doesn't get stolen it's really convenient.

The article states that Jap phone has everything in it (all the gadgets you can think of as big as it gets) and look all the same while iPhone settles for less (well still has lot more than normal cell), for example only 2 megapixel camera but then again iPhone looks cool and stylish :) So basically ugly all-in-one solution versus cool cell phone.

I most likely will get iPhone at some point, Im just too much of a Apple fan by now, already have 2 macs... just dont know if I will get one right away because of the high prize and in Finland the data plans you can get for the phone suck a bit, so might wait till other companies start to sell iPhones as well and competition gets prizes down and give better data plans.

The iPhone will be released today (July 11) here. I actually want one, but it's quite expensive. 8 GB version costs about 525 Euro ($ 827) and the 16 GB version 615 Euro ($ 970)...
That's a lot of figurines for that amount of money... =_=

Will Sony be releasing this http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/overview/x1?cc=us&lc=en in Japan? It's kinda pricey though compared to the iphone, but at least we don't have to get locked into AT&T service here in the US.

How about neither, I really like a simple easy to use PHONE not a million and one toy gadgets. I do use the camera phone because it's handy and I don't need to drag the real cameras around with me but that's all I use the phone and the camera. The money thing would be alright though. Other than that for me it's all pointless.

I'm getting an Iphone, eventually.
Probably in a few months or so, at the moment they're pretty expensive and hard to get.
So I'd rather wait till school starts, and then get one.
Should be cheaper, and you don't have to overnight on the sidewalk ^^;

Recemtly Got a Sony G900 for cheap after trade in at Singapore but still I want an iPhone so I can develope some games on it. Apple knows product design very well that it can appeal to a wide variety of audiences, unlike Microsoft. I believe they will succeed in Japan and Asia on their terms. Will it take over current competitors this year i don't think so but who know in the future.

I have to say WOW!!!!!! That is one hell of a line!!!!!! The longest line I had ever seen!!!!!!
The Dancing Trooper had appeared, quick take a picture and film. That's what I think people thought when he saw you Danny!!!!! I must say, getting an Iphone is cool in all, sadly I already have the first gen one. Yes, I own an Iphone since November. It's pointless for me to get another...or is it...
I wonder how are you enjoying your Iphone over there in Japan!!!

Looks like you had a good time out there dude. Even though you probably sweated away half your body weight. iPhone goes on sale in Canada on Friday morning too, but it is met with controversy as the data plans are deemed a rip off. Me no get. Besides your comrades, do you talk to people while trooping or just gesture? The lady with the new white iPhone seems oddly familiar...

rogers did introduce a "promo" pricing from now till the end of august in response to the backalash. But the plan is still rather expensive. Its now $30 a month for the data fee for about 300mb i believe.

I think that is how they plan to get money out of us here in the US and Canada, jack up the price on the data plan. AT&T is increasing the data plan charge with the release of the iPhone 3G here in the states.

That lady does look familiar doesn't she... ^o^

The longest I've ever waited in a line was for the Chunnel: from 10 AM to about 8 PM since there was a defect in the tunnels orz.

Longest line I ever waited was at Comiket I think. Always take the first train to Comiket, arrive at Tokyo Big Sight around 5AM and wait 'til 10AM when Comiket opens -_- I always wonder why I'm there when it's either super hot or super cold depending on which Comiket yet I always rinse repeat the process...

Incredible this japanese! I personally would prefer an iPhone, cause few days ago I was fingering a friends iPod touch, and it was incredible, maybe the iPod touch doesnt have much to do with the iPhone, but gives an idea of iPhone's caracteristics. Here in Madrid they gonna launch it today as well, yesterday I was in the center of Madrid, where the main Movistar store was, and there was a really long queue, but not so long as the one in Japan lol.
Hector said that the queue for the Wii was even longer, really?

What a que! i'd rather get a sony ericsson phone than iphone. the iphone 3g is supposed to be launched at a very costly rate here in india (rumoured to be about USD460) which would make it a niche product. at that price other phones look great compared to it.

I gotta say, a lot of japanese phones look alike, and like someone else said, theres so many clamshells. But I'd rather get an iphone, dont really like the look of the japanese ones (although the features are great)

And I guess thats the latest activity form Roy we're gonna see for a while :< sucks how hes not blogging. Though it looks like he did end up getting iphone, even thought he said he wouldnt ;p

Yep the iPhone got launched today in Aus as well. Was told in the morning by my workmate where the line has already started since early yesterday evening at the Sydney apple store. I do plan to get one but not anytime soon. I like my Nokia 6230i, I had it for 4 years and it still does the things I want.
The longest I waited in line for was to get a autograph from Delta Goodrem and Brain McFadden. It was an 8hr wait where I almost missed out due to the lengthly queue and time but it was worth it in the end.
Note: I'm not doing that again. @_@

I would prefer a Japanese phone, too bad that they don't work here...
but why does non of the big mobile phone producers create a cool multitouch-phone
I don't want to buy overprized Apple.ährm..stuff

btw I always order my gadgets/figures/hardware/... on the internet, much more comfortable than waiting hours/days in a line ;)

Just managed to catch a break now to read this orz, & you're very welcome!
The most I've probably waited for anything was for Animania at Town Hall Sydney. I pre-registered, but the line was still long even though I got there about 40mins before the doors opened

I wouldn't get the iPhone myself, and I think the features on the japanese phones are a little excessive :x (plus it I think you've mentioned that you can't change the sim card?), but I wouldn't say no if someone were to give me an iPhone ^_~ lol

Keep dancing Danny~! I'm still looking forward to the rock trooper video ;D (don't over do it though and keep hydrated in this weather D=)

Can't believe people would queue so much for a phone!! o_o Everyone seemed really excited...for a phone. I don't really like the Iphone, my old samsung does just fine. : ) Then again I've never been a fan of apple products, perhaps only the macbook. I really like Japanese phones, they can do so much more than the ones in UK. It's awesome!

The longest I queued well..lots of times. When we went to Paris we had to queue to see Monet's waterlilies, very long wait. Recently we had to queue at the estate agents for about two hours to get the keys to my sisters house. Both in the heat. The heat and the lack of chairs is what makes it uncomfortable to wait! That's about all I can remember ^_^

Anyway, iPhone is quite crazy over here as well, with auctions going 5 times that price.

For my taste, even the iPhone does to much. I bought a Motorola Startac a month ago because the best one can do with a mobile is actually phone someone! For the rest, there is Panasonic's R7 (which can be upgraded with a HSDPA PCMCIA card if needed)!

Phone. Its a phone. And still: Its a phone.

Oh, this looks like it was so much fun! Wish I could have been there too... Shame on you Danny! Hector already told us what you had hidden inside your armor. ^o^

I want an iPhone 3G, but I want to be able to use it both here in the states and in Japan. I need to check with AT&T or Softbank to see if I can do that before I buy. I'm a Softbank customer now, but I'm still wondering if I should wait after what Eddie wrote on his blog.

Was Roy able to get an iPhone? I would like to read his impressions. Hopefully he will write something up on his blog.

Without a doubt, an event like this is a great place to network in many places. Wish the same was true for this area. Maybe its just me, but in Japan it is so much easier to meet people and make connections. Just the short times I get to visit, I'm often meeting people. I suppose it is the way Japanese view things. Every place is an opportunity to meet new people who might share your interest and/or your profession.

I like the look on the cameraman's face. Come on buddy, I'm trying to work here! ^o^

Sure Japanese mobiles have everything, but how many people do you know who use most or half of the features available? Most Japanese I know don't because of the cost. It doesn't surprise me that they would want an iPhone. I think I would take an iPhone over most Japanese mobile as well.

I stayed up almost the entire time during Leo Laporte's 24 hours of iPhone coverage. He was giving them away free (He had ten) Nine went out. My allergies and lack of sleep over the past few days finally caught me at 9:30 AM Eastern. Leo made it the full 24 hours (10 AM Pacific (New Zealand sells phone) to 10 AM Pacific on Friday (Hawaii's apple store opened.) It was a lot of fun, except for a few chat trolls. And it was fun to see the lines go from nothing (At 4 AM) to 200+ people in some places at 8AM. I wonder if our CNN will have Danny on it?

I'll get an iphone eventually, when the price goes down or whenever my phone breaks. I still prefer my HTC TYTN phone with the full keyboard. It might be more bulky than the Japanese phone, but at least mine has the full keyboard and the 3G feature. I still haven't used all my phone's features since I can't justify spending so much money on the plans. Iphone human interface is nice though.
