A Week in Tokyo 19

日本語/Japanese
Mon 2008/07/07 20:25
This week we take a look at speaking ice cream, pointing people, old eroge mags, fire day, wishes on a tree and more.

First up is meetings at Ueno. Tokyo has a load of tall thin buildings.
Why do you see train drivers pointing at things and shouting all the time?
This action is known as Shisa Kanko [指差喚呼[しさかんこ]] and is a method employed by the Japanese to confirm and remember things.The steps are...
1. Use ones eyes to confirm
2. Point with arm stretched
3. Vocally say what you are doing with a "Yoshi!" on the end.
4. Listen to yourself and what you are saying to confirm the action.
You can see a bus driver doing this in the Wikipedia entry.

I do this when I leave the house for the day as I dont want to worry about whether I've locked the door or not.

Do you have any interesting ways to remember whether you've done something?

Also, if anybody has an interesting way of managine short term memory then do share.
I used to visualize a shelf with many different items in my mind. If I wanted to remember for example that I needed to by some milk, I would imagine an item on that shelf associated with some milk somehow.
Pay a clairvoyant 3,000 yen to read your destiny - any takers?
This is known as Uranai [占い[うらない]]. And if you are seeing squares immediately to the left of this text, it means you don't have Japanese fonts installed.
Mirai Inc has been running for a while now and I wa shocked (like this) at how many Japanese businesses still rely on physical paper to do work. A few of my clients cant do *anything* without something being sent to them via post.
Catching up on some Geass in the lounge. The amount of nice girlies in R2 has increased a lot!

I watch my anime through my Mac Mini attached to the plasma. I have comrades who record the shows for me so that I don't need to stay up until the early hours to watch anime - I'm sure you have the same comrades too ^^;

While I could watch on the computer at the desk, I cant relax in the same environment that I work in and usually watch anime in the lounge. Where do you watch your anime?
When you are at a ramen place, you will normally see the manga with gravure models on the cover. I think this is to get the customer to concentrate on the models rather than the taste ^^;
Book Off don't accept eroge mags anymore so they all go out on paper recycle day. I could never get School Mate to run on Parallels...
What do you do with your unwanted mags?
Its already a red hot summer but the colonel wants to kill us by making it hotter with their new spicy product.
BLT with a Mikuru pickle on the side.
Everyone who works at this pachinko parlor gets fired on fire day.
Konomi joins me for some yummy Korean food for lunch - about 760 yen.
Hello Kitty sells life insurance in Japan.
Cant remember what day it was but children write their wishes on colored tags and hang it on trees.
Plants will scream if you try to pluck them.
If somebody offers you a talking ice-cream then you should politely refuse with your arm stretched out.
Circular garage which does not allow you to get out the car when parked - unless you normally climb through the windscreen.
No matter how clean you keep your place, cockroaches will always find their way into the house. They commonly come out during the summer time which is why the TV is full of anti cockroach products - vintage Robocop roach ad posted earlier to the News Items.

These are little houses with a sticky floor. They come with some bait to entice the roaches.
Once they go in, they stay in until you extract them by hand and bite their heads off.
Cockroaches common in your region too?
Hayashi Om Curry Rice - about 880 yen.
A sign in the park showing you the correct position to fart without causing backache.
The incredibly cute Kemeko cant wait for the anime.
Practice farting without making a noise. How do you handle a situation when you do a noisy fart in front of others?

This question obviously only applies to boys because girls don't fart.
That small stone hut looking object is designed to keep a guard in there all day. Although it could look like a Tardis on the inside.
The origins of the Tardis below. Me have not seen Dr Who for years - how is it these days?
Out n about for walkies near the emperors palace.
Time for some food at a nearby cafe.
How I would love to have a huge lawn to laze around in on a sunny afternoon. Will have to wait until we buy our second house ^^;
The rising temperatures in Tokyo mean that its time to dig out the electric fan.
Digging through some old Star Wars figures. Use my dads shoe boxes to store them ^^;
Was actually digging around for accessories for the Figmas.
Sorting through figure accessories. There are accessories here for 9 different figures - can you name them all?
The winner gets a virtual back pat and a free browser cookie.
Shopping for some grub to eat on a hot Sunday afternoon.
Mmmmm. me loves purin. purupuru purin.
You've probably guessed by now that I like ice cream ^^;
Notice how the contents look huge on the box - the contents turned out to be bite sizes orz.
Heading out to Shinjuku.
My work space changes all the time - its mostly placement of the figures though as I play with them a lot ^^;
Here I'm about to settle down for some coding with some cappuccino n cake on a Saturday afternoon.
Review of Kanu up soon.
Made the glass shelf next to the window higher to accommodate more figures.
And the shelf next to me currently looks like this - more figures on the second, third floor and in storage ^^;;;
Tsutaya is a popular chain store for DVD rentals which are still popular over here. Physical DVD rental still popular in your region?
The invisible man takes a bite of ramen.
Out n about at night in the Meguro area.
How is your Tokyo train knowledge? Can you guess this line?
Tokyo want to hold the Olympics in 2016. Will you be watching the Olympics this year?
If you are feeling down n out with no money to buy a NDS or PSP, you may want to "invest" a few hundred yen at this machine. Stick in 100 yen and lights will flash at high speed in front of each product...
Hit the button at the right time, and if the good lord is on your side, the light will stop in front of the NDS or PSP and you will receive a spanking new game machine.

If the good lords is not on your side, you will receive a slap in the face and a packet of tissues worth 5 yen.
And this weeks "caption that photo" is brought to you by Rize and the Japanese Pedo Bear.

And before I forget, if you miss any of the Week in Tokyo episodes, you can always find past installments in the Week In Tokyo archives or RSS subscribe to the Week in Tokyo feed.
First time here?
If you are new here, you may want to keep up with more of the same via RSS or Danny's other networks. (dont show again)

I watch anime on the PC. It's my all-in-one work/entertainment centre (ha, beat that, PS3!).

I believe people write wishes and hang them on trees during Tanabata. Or at least, that's what [SHnY Anime Spoiler] happened in one of my favorite chapter in the Suzumiya Haruhi light novels [/End SHnY Anime Spoiler].

I'm planning to throw away my old Newtype Japan magazines. They are in very good condition but they are just taking too much space.

Lastly, I miss those days I can just chuck action figures into a shoe box. Nowadays, figures have to be cared for like some kind of bonsai plant. Dust them! Make sure they don't lean! Don't drop them, or the paint will chip off! No, no touchy after cheestos! Keep them off the sunlight!

I hear ya! I've got all the Newtype USAs taking up rude amounts of room. I wonder what they go for on ebay....

Leaning figures are a pain. I got back from the Glastonbury Festival to find my 1/4 Yuki about to jump off the shelf!
Mounted her by her feet at a reclined 45 angle and abused her ankles with a hairdryer for 20 mins, better then ever now. Got some funny looks from the wife though....

I never get tired seeing your desk, with coolsome lighting and loads of figures around. Maybe I should toss my books to create more space.
I watch anime on my TV using a TV-out from my pc; although I've noticed that my current monitor is almost as large as the tv now -.-. Need to save up for an lcd panel asap.

Oh Danny how you drive me green with anchovy!
Awesome sum up as usual : )
Over here in Aus major companies are taking initiatives for paper reduction via option to send bills via emails instead of physical billing. Still, mail is a huge part of our lives still, with the mail box absolutely stuffed with trash.

From your culinary exchanges I wanna ask, do you ever feel the need to knock up some steak and kidney pies, fish n chips, potato n mash, or maybe a haggis or two? Even though I am Asian, cook myself, family owns restaurant I still find myself craving the ol western 'tucka' on a regular basis.

It's tanabata. The day when you write your wishes and hang it up on the bamboo tree. And I believe that line is sobu line. :)

Strange, I don't think I've ever seen a cockroach in my house. I'm sure they're present in the region though.

Also, I once ate talking ice-cream. It was surprisingly quiet as I bit off it's head... oh, that sort of explains it dosen't it.

My figure part knowledge is apparently very limited. I do see Mirei-sans pen arm, and looks like a bunch of figma Haruhi hands and stuff. That's all I got.
DVD rental places are still popular here instead of PPV. They still got Blockbuster in Japan?
One of the things about growing older is the gas. Eat too little: gas. Eat too much: gas. Breathe: gas. If you doin those excercises in the park you've probably farted between reps. Speakin of which Danny, since you're obviously out n about I assume the back is doin alright. Good to see.

I watch most of my anime on my MBP actually. I would watch it on my tv in the lounge just by bringing the portable HD and plug it to the PS3 if I could find AVI versions of anime more easily...

Unwanted mags, I usually either throw it in the recycling bin or give it to a cousin or friend if he's interested.

The Korean lunch looks yummy as does the Hersey ice cream bite size thingies. Speaking of spicy, can you eat very spicy foods, Danny?

DVD rental is still quite popular here. A few local blockbusters and video ezy have closed down though.

Gonna watch this year's olympics on the tv for sure as long as it's not on too late or anything since I'll probably be at work half the time the events are on.

I watch all of my anime on the PC. In a few days it will all change and I'll be able to watch it on the plasma. Looking forward to when my cable arrives ^^
There aren't any mags or manga to read in Japanese restaurants here, just a few things on the wall with japanese writing.
All my unwanted magazines go into the recyclable bin. We have 3 different bins here.
I'd say that cockroaches congregate anywhere people live. There are plenty here, but not many in my home because my mum is afraid of them, so we have pest control annually.

I can only guess that train line is Yamanote Sen.

Dr Who is back on the TV here in the UK, but it's not as good as the Tom Baker years IMHO. Daleks can now fly though :-)

Actually, the Daleks had basic floatation since the 7th Doctor's Remembrance of the Daleks. Of course it's a lot better now.

I'm not too crazy about the new Cybermen, though. They are just too different.

recognize parts for 6 figures in that picture.

Many german cockroaches where I used to live. I would say that the combination of close living quarters and a poorly constructed collective of buildings in an area, perpetuates the problem.

would handle audible gas leaks like so:
- Group of 3+: blame your friend; timing must be good.
- With a partner: "You liked that?"

Those machines are rubbish. It doesn't matter even if you press it at the exact millisecond. My friend said there's a fixed win after X no. of tries. So if you have a lot of time, camp at the place and count how many tries people waste their money on before a prize is won.

Danny,

You should catch up on Doctor Who, it's even on Japanese TV now.

The revival for the last four years has been amazing, Christopher Eccleston completed one season, followed by three seasons of David Tennant. Kylie's even been on it (last year's Xmas special).

This last weekend the current season ended, with the next season now not scheduled until 2010. The producer for the last four years has been Russell T. Davies, who has a huge passion for the series. The seasons have had great continuing storylines (1 hour episodes as opposed to the old 4 and 6-part stories) and the production values are light-years above the old days. (That, and the ratings have been amazing!)

Only been able to watch anime on PC, it's easier to navigate and watch it on PC.
Physical DVD rental is going low here in USA, due to the NetFlix which is a DVD rental over the on internet. You pay a monthly fee about $19.95 and you visit the website and select the titles you want online. You can rent as many DVDs as you want and it comes with a paid shipping envelope where you put the DVD, seal it and put the envelope in the mail box and rinse repeat.
I can't believe BookOff don't accept eroge mags anymore, they keep sending more of them to their branches here in Los Angeles area! Does that mean they are 'dumping' their useless stocks down here in US!?

I usually watch anime on the computer since it's easier and safer than watching it on a big screen... Coz the anime I watch have so much fan service in them...

What do I do with uneanted magazines? I give them away ofcourse! I secretly put them infront of the neighbours door... Oh, I can play Schoolmate on my computer LOL

Pfft, people getting fired on Fire Day... And LOL at talking ice-cream... So I can accept ice-cream if it doesn't talk?

I've played that gamemcahine in second last picture... I didn't win... And lost about five bucks...

then I'll have to hold it in as best as I can, but then on the train there's the sound of the train to mask the fart sound lol (just not the smell ^^;;;; )

I watch anime on my laptop - the desktop is slow, and my family sure isn't about to let me take over the TV. By that same principle, I basically do *everything* on my laptop.

I am amused by the circular garage/building/thing.

Watch anime on my computer with my old CRT( like the contrast of such PC screen when black is truly black), and yes i have the same comrade who's nice enough to subtitle it :). I used to have cockroaches when I was living in a tower in Paris because of general system for dumping garbages which is a hole in the wall linked to a tube that bring garbage to the ground floor. When folks throw glass bottle or any hard thing they pierce the tube which create a way through appartment and it's how we can be infested by these little monsters who's gonna rule the world soon. For the rental DVD, it's seem to work pretty good late night for the insomniac since they all turned into automatic distributing machine.

I've got a tv in my room but without a cable/satellite connection.
Had one but found it useless so we disconnected it(less to payP:).

I don't know if it's counted as "short term memory", but when I was doing promo courses in Cadets and didn't have the luxury of an alarm clock (generally most of us were up about an hour before we were meant to be to get things done, would have been in strife if we were caught) I would try and build a spinning visual model of the time I wanted to get up in my head. More difficult than it sounds cause I'd loose it every time I thought about something else. Seemed to work though.

That garage could only have been designed by an architect, all flair, no practicality :P

As for anime watching, I mostly watch on the computer. Partly because I used it as a half hour "out" when I'm working and can't be bothered moving, and partly because all my good sound gear's up here. I've also got a TV and DVD player setup in the downstairs work room for when I'm working on models for uni.

Great article Danny, didn't realise many people stored figures in boxes besides their original packaging. I display mine or keep them in boxed. As for anime, I watch on my pc most of the time but, my original dvd colection has grown significantly and that means I can actually watch them on my dvd player ^-^
I fnd it easier to remember thigs once I associate the action/idea with something. I tend to remember finer details of games/anime, so I use those.

Great post as usual. Whenever I read your week in tokyo posts I suddenly feel hungry. The pictures you take of the food are scrumptious!!

I usually watch anime on the PC but I find myself watching it most of the time on the iPod Touch. Most of the time when I get home I catch up on the games I haven't finished yet. Got a load of them.

I've always liked your workspace. Looks comfortable, relaxing and fun with all those figures and the great lighting ^^

That one picture appears to be from Meguro station. I don't go there often...so it is a wild guess...well not so wild since the sign under the tracks says Meguro *something*something* to the right.

Saying things like what you mentioned reminds me of colleagues who tended to say stuff like "yoisho" when doing any activity...even when not exerting force. I guess that is to show that they are in fact exerting force like lifting heavy objects. I didn't get it then, but I say that on occasion in the US and a lot when I am back traveling in Japan. @_@

All these photos just remind me that I was in Japan in April, and now I'm not :(
...always appreciated though.

I have a media center laptop hooked up to my home cinema system in the living room.  I archive the shows my 'comrades' have recorded for me to disc then put them on the HDD when I'm ready to watch them.  I do this so I can delete them as I go, otherwise I forget what episode I'm on ^^;

I always use the ProLogic IIx Movie mode on my amp to watch (stereo) anime and strangely, have often found it to be better than the 5.1 versions the US DVD releases usually get. I wonder why....?
