There is a link under the portal title where you can RSS subscribe to only the figure articles too.
Scrolling to the bottom of the Figure portal, you will see product rankings for Good Smile Company, Max Factory, All figures and a figure release schedule for the current month too.
Users will be able to get to the new portals from the header as shown below.
The Japan portal will soon feature maps and easy to find categories such as Places to visit, Food, Customs and Culture etc.
Folks who are only here for the Japan stuff may want to bookmark the Japan portal instead and subscribe to the Japan only feed.
I frequently get complaints from users about figures and non Japan related articles popping up in the feed/browser when they visit the site - now they have no excuse to complain ^^;
I also get complaints from users about some of the ecchi content meaning that they cant refer this site to their friends - well now they can by using http://www.dannychoo.com/japan/eng/ - only Japan articles in the center column and Japan categorized member news in the left column.
I'm guessing that most of you are either here for figures, Japan or both - which are you?
Another thing that the portals allow me to do is to make sure folks coming from a Japan related site like JapanProbe (for example) lands on the Japan portal instead of the default index page - I do this by checking the referrer and setting a rule in a settings file. Likewise, referrals from some figure sites will land on the Figure portal. This means that a niche user will be greeted with a page full of their niche subject and the conversion rate to get that new user to stay increases. I obviously only do this for links to the top page only and not for links to direct articles or posts.
I have added the Anime category to the header - Search is now under "More" but I will stick a search box in the subnav soon.
The default view of the release schedule displays releases for the current month but you can look through all months.
The plan is to make the store so that you can embed your associate tag in all products and also add your own header/footer enabling you to monetize.

I really like the new portal feature, I'm hoping the idol section will get more lovin. Also as a suggestion you should do a restaurant/food review section of tatsy places in Japan to eat .. maybe places will give you kickbacks also ^^

took me sometime to figure how to get the drop-menu for the portal. finally found out that i need to right-click on the top menu thumbnails.. danny, i suggest that sort of standardize it either hover, or click or right click. getting abit confuse, some of the droplist require hover, while some needs clicking (newer users might not discover those hidden menus) or put a indicator that those thumbnails or link will extend a hidden drop-menu also, i found my that right-clicking on the thumbnail menu sometimes gives me firefox's menu instead. or maybe my mouse is buggy.. but your idea of portal is really great...now i am able to view article in a more organized way..thank and keep on improving.. *kaizen desu* (thats i picked up from the 6 sigma classes..lol)

Great updates, those release schedules will definitely come in handy! As for the question of the day, I guess I'm here mainly for Japan, but I also do love the figure posts. After all, I became a figure collector a year ago partly because of this site. ^^

I personally think the rankings for figures are a great addition. I can't always keep up with what's new and what's hot in figures, but this would give me a good insight. Keep it up!

This is great! I didn't want to subscribe to RSS in case I get a load of articles on figures- but now I can subscribe to the Japan bits only :D I sometimes look at figures, but mainly I'm here to learn about Japan etc.

Thanks for figure portal, Danny. Although I'm fascinated by Japan, what really brought me to your site were the figures posts and information. Growing out of my model building past, resin and PVC figures have really peaked my interest in the last few months and It's great having a site as nice as yours to keep me informed. Domo arigato.

This is a great idea Danny. You know that since you went with it. ^^ So much information is becoming part of dannychoo.com. This will make finding it easier for those who are not sure where to look and want specific information. We all need to get some more Gundam content for the Gundam portal. After all what is dannychoo.com without Gundam. I need to see if I can take pictures inside Joshin Osaka Gundam's. http://shop.joshin.co.jp/shopdetail.php?cd=1665&area=&keyword=%C6%FC%CB%DC%B The shop is two floors and just the right size for the staff to keep a close eye on things. You are a genius, Danny. You read my mind on finding a page with list of figures that shows the current hot selling ones, the release dates, etc. 2 Thumbs up for you! On a site note, is there a way to display the figure's English name aside from it's Japanese name? It's taking a while to find the English name since I have to scroll through the Figure portals to find the name of the figure in one of the reviews.
