A survey carried out by Dai Ichi Life revealed that 39% of Japanese primary school girls take lessons outside school hours to learn how to play a musical instrument.

For primary school boys the most popular lesson was swimming. The list of other lessons that were most popular with primary school students were soccer, baseball, Budo (Kendo and Judo), drawing/painting, ballet and English language.

According to the research, only less than 10% of students dont take any lessons outside of school.

Would be interested to hear what its like in your region but I don't remember me or any of my buddies during primary school times back in the UK taking any lessons outside of school to learn anything apart from hanging around the streets saying "hey you see the walkman that man has - its mine" and "yea well that BMW is mine."

If I had the choice I would have loved to learn how to play the piano or guitar. Any of you play an instrument? Did you take any other lessons outside school to learn something?

I would have also loved to have been sent to Chinese school to learn how to read n write while I was young too - ended up learning Chinese using Japanese text books ^^;
As for the pics in this post - well for some reason I have in my possession a guitar and for some reason its propped by my armor. Folks who read or subscribe to my news items will already know what this is all about ^^;

I thought I would look up how many Japanese youngsters learn how to play the guitar and came across that survey.

Might as well take a look at what my armor looks like on the inside.
This is the utility belt and have stuffed it with bits n pieces to fix the armor in an emergency - some wires, cloth, studs, super glue etc.
The cod piece modified so that I dont need to take everything off for a number 1. Still have not worked out how to keep everything on when I go for a number 2 or 3.
The metal bits sticking out keep the utility belt locked down in place.
Shoulders look rough with the studs but means that the shoulder armor stays on when dancing (prancing) around.
The inside of the shoulders look like this.
Dancho armband helps you identify me when you see stormtroopers walking around Tokyo.
Back of the cod looks terrible and has been through many mods which is why there are bits of old glue all over. The brown stuff is skid marks which were left from when I couldn't get the armor off quick enough when I wanted to go for a number 3.
Pocket for the iPod.
Inside back of armor. Is originally one piece and cut for extra articulation.
I think you've seen this before but the inside of the helmet looks like this.

I think the only thing I took lessons for (outside school) was swimming lessons during primary school. Later on Middle school I took guitar lessons but that was part of school (you had to take a cultural course each year.. things like drawing, playing instruments, singing, acting, chess, etc).

Unfortunately I was in a similar situation to you. Didn't get to take any lessons I could not afford to go. Was also not sent to chinese school because I actually refused to go back then since it was at a church. How I regret that now!

Glad you learnt you mother language through self persistence and discipline. I don't think I can do that.

It's fairly normal for an excellent teacher who is in demand. When in LA, my teachers charged 150-200. It depends on the teacher and the city. In a small town like where I am it is more difficult to charge that much.

My rates vary incredibly, from FREE to 100 dollars an hour; but if I was in a bigger city I would charge 150.

You're right. In NY, they can charge over $500 per hour. It's kind of crazy, but when they're that much in demand, they gotta do something to select out a few.

After school activities aren't big here. Most would rather just hang at the mall.

I use to take piano, but I can't stand it now. Does playing guitar in Rockband count? The gf is more talented with piano, violin, and playing the skin flute.

BTW... Yez guitar, missing a few strings... @.@

I've taken lessons every summer during Primary till high school.. They are Art/Painting, Computer basics, Tennis, Swimming, Chinese Language and Math Tutorials(Which my parents sent me sometime during high school summer and during after regular classes), PMT(Physics,Math,Trigonometry). I can only say that the ART/Painting was the only activity that is/was useful for me... But they are not being attended altogether,BTW. I am a man without a talent..

I remember having music lessons (solfège) mixed with normal class during primary school. Then I went to music school after class for instrument lessons (piano, trombone...).
We were a bunch of friends doing this, but we were jealous from others who did not have anything to do and were playing soccer in the play-ground... well, we were just kids who wanted to have fun, no class ^^;

Actually, some of the Chinese linguists, here, have been telling us (Japanese speakers) we should learn Chinese. They said as far as speaking goes, it's easier (grammatically) than Japanese. Also, our breadth of kanji knowledge would help with the reading.

Maybe after hammering out my theses, I'll give it a shot. ^^

...I'm doing the opposite. I'm using my Chinese knowledge to help learn Japanese. x_x"

Used to take swimming, art (painting) and supplemental Chinese and math classes. My parents wanted me to take piano and Mandarin too, but I protested everytime they raised the subject for years until they finally gave up.

I don't regret that - the time I gained to play in my childhood is priceless and can't be replaced. Still, would be nice to know some sort of musical instrument. x_x

Wow, Japanese primary school kids really seem to have much opportunity.

I was too lazy to do anything in primary school and even if I had the motivation, it'd be too expensive.
Currently, teach myself art, music and a bit of programming. I learned piano for a while but, after my teahcer passed on, I stopped. Now I'm starting guitar :)
I'm not sure if being 'self-taught' counts though.

When I was younger, my parents signed me up for Organ, Violin, and Harp (the huge ones you see in orchestra). Incidentally, I wanted to learn to play the guitar, but my mother signed me up for violin instead. Maybe she thought the violin was a miniature guitar. -_-;

I also learned Music Theory, though I quit all music lessons when I entered high school. Although I don't really know how to play them anymore, my love for classical music probably stemmed from there (though I hated practicing).

I also learned swimming and Mandarin, though my Mandarin is pretty crap.

I did ballet, till my first Computer ever entered my room... then it was over. ^^;
I didnt cut back on sports stuff though but it weren't "lessons". Private inline and ice skating.
Though i wanted to take Japanese lessons, around the area where i did grow up there were none and driving 4h to get me to a lesson and back home would not have worked back then for my mom lol. Why did my parents build a house on the country side... i'm a city child at heart *grumble*.

In my spare time I learned how to play the clarinet. I also did some sports like soccer, and basketball, but never at the same time. I actually work for a school district and the amount of after school activities parents make kids do is insane. Kids should just be kids.
