Yes - this is what my room used to look like in 1988...
All images in this article are enlargeable BTW.
And dont forget that we are waiting to see pics of your room in the Your Room category.
Used to be totally in lurve with Kylie Minogue and made my room a shrine dedicated to her. One of my fave Kylie tracks "Better The Devil You Know" below.
Wow, bringing back a load of memories as I dig through YouTube. "Got To Be Certain below." Shes so small n sweet.
All music I had was still on vinyl at the time.
The ceiling and even the curtains were made out of Kylie ^^; Another few fave Kylie tracks - "Wouldn't Change A Thing"
"Hand On YOur Heart"
"Made In Heaven" - check that heir style.
Notice the PlayBoy cover on the wall - being a young lad with no internets was tough - all health care material was paper based...

I think this was in 1990. Notice how the Japanese influence is starting to take over. Original Macross VHS on screen. The first version I watched was dubbed in Cantonese.

The Japanese influence started from games - specifically the Sega Mega Drive.

Also notice the Little Mermaid on the TV. Ariel is such a sweetie - my first figure.
I think this was in 1990. After the Mega Drive and incredibly crappy Mega CD Rom, I got a Super Famicom. Started to fall in love with 2D girls too. Used to get PC Engine magazine for the 2D girls - didn't have a PC Engine at the time though.

You will also notice pics of Claudia Schiffer too - will post the pics I have taken with Kylie and Claudia soon.
Tis 1992 and even more in love with Japan. Get hold of a PC Engine that you see below the TV on the left. Have no idea why I've got two TVs but remember it being useful for watching anime and playing games at the same time.
The transition from Kylie to Japanese Anime and Game Otaku is complete and by 1993 I finally make my first trip to Japan after saving up every year for a plane ticket. For those who are interested, I talk about what I was doing at this moment in life in my Learning Japanese article which explains how I went from wanting-to-live-in-Japan to actually living here.
The next love in my live was Nishida Hikaru - you may remember me chasing after her in roller blades from reading this article.
Im sure that it happens to most of us but how many of you are/were in lurve with celebrities or 2D girls/boys? Any ones in particular?
Got rid of the horrible wallpaper in 1994 and painted everything white. Kept up posters of Hikaru and other 2D girls.

I had to trek to a Japanese book store to get hold or Japanese TV recordings. I'm telling ya - learning Japanese and being an otaku without the internets was tough!

The brunette 2D girl is from Dangaioh - forgot her name but you can see how nice she is from the following vid.
This is the sort of pencil art I used to draw - pic of me and Hikaru in Akihabara - used to have these on the wall. So ronery...
Me and Hikaru by the beach (continues laughing).

Some of those were early 1990's judging by the video, games, fashion in the pics, and anime. Looks like a musuem.

ANime of the 1990's is a lost art.

To be in love with 2D girls or celebrities? Nah I think not... Maybe finding some my type, but falling in love with them is a completely different story that I guess never concerned yours truly.

This is AWESOME Danny!!! Wow-- I love it! I think it would have been so cool to be one of your childhood friends! So--- you speak English, Cantonese and Japanese! That is so cool!! Any other languages? Studying Japanese is difficult EVEN WITH the 'net. I am trying to do it right now. Lucky for me I have a live-in tutor who's from Sendai. :-)

So, you learned Japanese from shows, huh? I tried that, and I couldn't keep up. Well, I have to admit, I started while in college, trying to do two majors...
And I would suggest German as well. The Romance Languages (French, Spanish, Italian, etc.) are easier to learn.

Whoa, thats some Kylie Minogue patronage right there. I like "Spinning Around" the most out of all her songs.

I'm gonna be completely honest here and a lot of old friends know about it. I used to be a huge Britney Spears fan. The inner pages of my high school binder was composed entirely of her pictures, completely the opposite of my goth kid appearance. When I got into college all my fanboyism just disappeared, (must've been the crowd I hung out with). Ah the folly of being young and naive.

Kylie celebrated her 40th birthday yesterday. U should have emailed her ur shrine photos so maybe she might send u a gift. I heard she was giving away gifts for her loyal dedicated fans, past or present.

Playing games and watching anime at the same time, I should try that. ^_^

When I was living in London (2003-2004), there was a TV station (can't remember which one-- Channel4 maybe?) that played Kylie's 'Love At First Sight' video EVERY morning around 07:30. I don't know why that was, but it pretty much got me started every day before going to work.

I remember I had lots of rock band posters glued to my room walls...

And had lots of friends with dolphin care material...

Incredible time machine there Danny... I don't think I have pictures of my wall from years ago.

But anyways, yeah I have a crush on several 2D girls... kinda brave (or stupid) to admit that being my age and all, but meh, who cares. It's not like I don't have crushes on 3D girls too.

This is inspiring. I think I know what I'm missing now with regards to my life purpose: the level of desperation and forced sort of resolve I could get without access to the internets that have drowned me with virtual distractions, making my life overly comfortable and stagnant and slowing me from deciding where to settle occupationwise. I can see how disciplined you could get by taking this difficult path and making it through.

Holy shit Danny.. I don't know if you shouldve posted all that :)

It looks so dirty.. and messy.. but most of all, it looks obsessed, I think. It's a good thing you've turned your full attention to your company now :) If I had been one of your parents in the early 90ties, I wouldve been seriously worried :) Too bad we didn't meet back then :) We couldve been friends.. gah, it sucks to have grown up without Internet!

Ah the classic 90's anime. I think still have copies of Dangaioh lying around somewhere. Speaking of Nishida Hikaru I remember seeing her and two other ladies on a Japanese celebrity talent show playing some medley with xylophone keys strapped to their bodies. They were actually really good. Nice pencil art btw, good perspective drawing.

Wow, Danny... what a lovely look at your room and lifestyle! The layout is good, made me feel as if I was a fly on the wall XD

I must say, I'm pretty surprised at your love for Kylie.. as I've only really had one obsession ( I'd rather not think of it. I can somehow relate to your entries though, like the transition to Otakuism and such.. very interesting indeed!

Your drawings are lovely, I think you should consider more art related work as well ^-^
Oh, last but, not least... I admire your ability to speak so many languages! I am able to speak English and Afrikaans for now but, in future I'm learning Japanese and Arabic ... perhaps in the future I'll try Korean, Chinese and German.

Very nice flashback Danny. I still love both 2D and 3D girls tho. Offtopic: Why don't you make pictures to open in a floating window when enlarged? Every time I enlarge a pic, it opens in the same window. Then, when I want to come back to the article, I have to hit back button and then the page reloads itself and take me back at the beginning of the article. Then I have to scroll down to where I was before I enlarged the image. A bit annoying IMHO.

Man, that makes me feel old too!!! Tho I'm more a child of the early 90s than 80s.

My first 3D crush was Cindy Crawford and, even as a little boy who thought girls were evil, I also had a thing for Christina Ricci when I watched the addams family movie, even now...

But as for 2D loves, first and foremost, Rei Ayanami!!! The women from the old 70s Mecha shows I watched were good, but i never really got into them. Oh, and the brunette from Dangaioh is Mia Alice. Best dangaioh girl, not that the selection was particularly big (no more than 4 for the entire thing)

Maybe I should try and make a living in Japan too. I still have time!

I see the otaku was strong within you from a very early age, Danny! X)

Man, that room with all those Kylie pics and posters is just... well, mesmerizing! I wonder what that day was like when you took down all of them and began re-covering your walls with 2D & Japanese beauties.

I, too, watched Macross in Cantonese originally in HK and then again in English as Robotech on Saturday mornings when we moved to Australia.

For me, my childhood crushes were/are Maggie Cheung (3D) and Princess Swan (2D) from Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets. Later as a teenager I had a calendar of Cindy Crawford in my room.

Had Mega Drive but never got the Mega CD. Had the PC Engine Duo as well and an imported Japanese Super Famicom when Street Fighter II came out. I also had one of those things that plugged in between the cartridge and the Super Famicom. I tried to relearn all the Chinese I had forgotten as well as some Japanese when playing games like Snatcher and later Tokimeki Memorial and FFVII on PS1.

Your pencil drawings are quite detailed especially that one with you and Hikaru in Akihabara. Very nice perspective!

Seeing everyones' rooms makes me want to show mine but I don't have that my photos of my old setup, which is unfortunate. And I'm currently in the midst of moving, so will have to wait until my new otaku space is all set up!! ^__^

I never knew you can speak Cantonese well, Danny. Back then, the best and latest anime stuff outside Japan came in the form of Hong Kong Cantonese dubs, which I grew up with, from Captain Tsubasa to Dragonball and such.

Just judging by your first photo, it's hard to fathom how you transformed into a typical 1980s Brit pop junkie into sophisticated 21st century Akiba otaku.

I came to US around early 90s and posted bunch of anime posters that came with Newtype megazine which were pretty expensive at the time. I didn't really fall in love with any real person but I think I did like few 2D girls. I think first 2D girl I like was Noriko from Gun Buster series. Gun Buster was one of the first anime that I saw in English subtitle so maybe able understand the story made the character more likeable.

But those room pics from 88 are top notch Danny, shows your true fandom!

I don't mind relive the 90's again. The music from Kylie Minogue (She only released two albums in the state), the PC Engine games (I always play it at my friend house. The JPN version not the US version), and the Japanese idol musics and animes. ROCK ON!

Danny. You and I have 95% in commands. The only different are you learn to speck Japanese, live in Japan, and own your software company. On the other hand, I couldn't find a programmer job, even thought I have a degree in Computer Science. I stuck in a dead end job. Everybody that I know do better than me. Life is suck in the state. Beside all the otaku stuffs, driving my car in the state that keep me alive.

I notice you had several posters of Reiko Miura (She from CoCo) on the wall. I wonder is she in the show biz? She so cute. COCO FOREVER!

Kylie Minogue is amazing, and even though she's not my generation, i still listen to her tracks once in a while because i believe she can actually sing, unlike many artists today. Plus, that was back when they didn't super-edit their voices to be in tune, so she must be very talented.

Hey Danny, was your Kylie fettish pre or post moe discovery? From the looks of things it was post. My room looked much the same, except with Claudia and Britney (while she was good). Only discovered moe a while afterwards, and soon all my posters were switched with wallscrolls, heh.

I am still in search of all the mid-80s and early 90 anime. Somehow I regret not being able to watch them all, either because of school or I was too young to remember what they were. I have some success but far from reaching my goal. It's interesting to see old pictures of my own room... somehow remind me of my younger and foolish days.

Never let myself grow too attached to any particular 2D girl or live person. I have my favorite 2D girls rotation, they all take turn to get my attention. I might have a top 10 list or something.

Oh yeah, wallpaper made from celebrities posters and pictures, very impressive, reminds me of my cousins room (my parents never allowed such things :). Used to like Kylie Minogue a lot too, but my true love was Britney Spears, I still remember the lyrics of my all time favorite Born to make you happy.:D

Genius at work
I have a good laughs here. I diddnt have time in my life to be a otaku (wether I was huge fan of rock music). I was married at 18, divorced with 2 daugthers at 23 (now I am 42). But I always be a young soul and live my dreams. My first computer was and old 286 and I used to work in wordstar. The I switch to 386 with a 2400 modem to connect to a free board to download games (wolfestein and stuff). I began to work with computers to fix my own to play the Tomb Raider´s demo.

I quit from be an insurance agent (11 years of work, travel, and luxury conventions), to work with computers all the time. I open an internet cafe and do some technical support. Then I was robbed and lost everything but my brains. Since then, I work from home (web design, and do recovery of damaged hard disks). I am very happy now (my 2 daugthers go to the University now)

Since I was young I was a fan from Japan. I remember to watch Ultraman (on black and white), Señorita Cometa (didnt know the japanese name), La Princesa Caballero, and so on. My sisters used to watch Heidi, Remy, Candy, etc.

Some time after I see Tekkaman Blade, and buy some "sentimental grafitti" figures.

In 2005 I was able to start selling in one toy market (The Rock Show), where many people buy and sell used and new toys. I have luck and was a very succesfull selling gashapon. Then I move to another market and open one store. Now I think I need to quit because the government here is conservative and are doing many things to dissapear anime things (I comment this in my blog later...)

Anyway, than you Danny for the memories...
