By the time i decide to change phone. It will be junk. So I will just keep it as a spare. In case i lose my new one, or if my family needs one
Whoever uses a cell/handphone to wipe one's bottom needs to be thrown into a mental institution and examined thoroughly for mental delusions, breakdown and any other possible psychological ailment. And we do have trade-in plans here, Danny. You are allowed to trade in your old phones for price slashes off your newer ones depending on what model your older phone is. I usually do that, probably they take them for recycling too.

In the US there are several programs to give retired cell phones to women's shelters (since the phones can be used for emergency numbers, whether or not they have an active account), or to send phones to soldiers overseas to be used to call family. Phones being kept due to the non-portability of data of the data on them is the arrogance of the phone manufacturers coming back to bite them. Despite all the fancy features on Japanese phones, I still can't shake the feeling that the manufacturers have no respect for the consumer due to problems like this.

Hardly ever changed phones! My first ever phone, Nokia 3310, which I had since 2000, is still in working condition and is now being a hand-me-down to my younger cousins who enlist into National Service, because in the army we can't hold on to camera phones and my cousins don't want to buy a new non-camera phone. The phone I had after the 3310, was the 7210, which my sis gave me in 2005 because she couldn't stand to watch me still using the 3310. But in the end the phone was passed to my mother to use soon after as I had enlisted, and I got myself a Motorola V200 for use during army life. All I can say is the phones I had used are all being "reused", so it's well-used and worth the money. Can't wait to get out of army and I'll donate my V200 to other cousins for their term in the army, and at the same time get a new phone!!
In Brazil you don't need recycling... because you usually buy another cellphone when your gets robbed. :P Ok, I might be exageratting here. But here's my experience (my family): My mom got her a cellphone because of her work. Morotola Startac (remember those?). After a long time, I got mine... a brick grayscale Nokia. My mom got robbed from her Startac... so she got another one, a Nokia that was on sale. After that I got my first GSM phone. A shitty Nokia 7710, worst phone I've ever seen. Felt like some prototype that shouldn't be released in the first place. After a while, my mom got her cellphone robbed once again, so I gave her my previous Nokia. That one was also robbed, so she bought a flip Nokia with big buttons which she's using 'till now, GSM. As for me, I managed to sell 7710 somehow and bought my current phone... a Sony Ericsson W810i, my best phone so far. Now I'm thinking of getting another phone only when Sony Ericsson releases something as small as W810i, with GPS, 3 to 5Mpx camera, and fair price. Xperia X1 is looking good, but I don't really need a Smartphone... so I'd rather wait for a beefed up normal cellphone without qwerty keyboard, Windows Mobile, or other stuff that might give me more headaches than help me. I was once willing to buy Nokia N95, but after using it a while (my friend has one), I'm glad I didn't. Nowadays, I simply don't think of getting a Nokia cellphone ever again. And thus, the cellphone saga ends.
I keep my old Mobile Phones ^^; I'm using Nokia N81 right now and still keeping my old N-Gage, the 1st one, and Nokia 3310 incase anything happens XD I would have gotten an IPhone if not because of the single provider thingy >_>;

in singapore, people change their phones all the time, usually within one or 2 years or even a few months! That is why there are lot of 2nd hand phone shops around the neighborhood that will greatly buy your phone and resell it elsewhere.
I keep mine, give it to close friends if they're in need. But my iPhone is something I'll never get bored of. I hope they come out in Japan by the time I'm studying there.
i usually keep my old mobile phones. maybe someday i could use them again for emergencies ^^ the government together with some major telecom companies and mobile phone companies had joined forces to have a Phone Recycling project and placed some mobile phone and accessories bin in malls throughout the metro ^^

I'm only at my second handphone, but for me as long as it's still in operable condition I'd keep it as an alarm clock. XD I never have enough of them.
i have been using mobile for 5 yrs only and have only changed it once after 4 yrs of use and still at the end sold it it was nokia 1100 hehehe got 1500 Rs. for it bought it for 5000 Rs. Nokia phones have a good second hand mobile market where i live. next time i will chage when i will get a job soon i hope then will buy a one with lots of functionalities . :)
@Hirito: Oh cmon, 3310 was the shit! It's like the best phone design ever xD extremely fast navigation, nice buttons, and can handle being dropped from even 10 m drop! what more could you want in a phone? I guess being thinner would help. I've heard that somewhere else before though... "I can't stand seeing you still use the 3310", but dont we all 3310 users love it so much there doesnt seem to be any need to change? ^^; 3310 users speak out! xD

I have 2 cellphone that i used and i never throw it in trash. It has my memories of my high school days to me.
Coincidently, I will be shoppin for a new unlocked phone in Asia in just a bit. Have a few ideas, but won't decide on which one til I'm there. I would consider gettin an iPhone, but Apple and Rogers (Canada's only GSM network) can never get their shite together and hammer out a deal. I've told Danny before that he'll probably get iPhone before me even though Japan uses 3G, and doesn't use GSM. Could get it cracked with software, but Apple keeps locking it with every firmware update. I actually still have an BIG nokia analog cell lying around. Everytime I throw it at someone to get rid of it they always throw it back. No love.
Retire? Who said anything about retire? I've had the same phone since 2003. It's indestructable... a Nokia 3510i. I just can't be arsed to buy a new one. And it still works, and I have anime ring tones(Google on your phone WOOO) It has internet and games, no camera(:sob:) but I'm used to it. Need a new case though, my hello kitty case is REALLY scabby now lol. And the 3310 ROCKED. There was nothing wrong with it. It worked, had Snake.(only thing the 3510i didnt do right.... had to download Snake...:sob:) What more could you want from a mobile at the time? And btw Choo-san, you've mentioned a figure-givaway/competition a couple of times now, how about a competition where you photograph your favourite figure, and the best photo wins? (Just photo, no photo-shopping) Or a competition to draw Mirai-chan? New outfit for Mirai-chan?
I keep my old cell phone, in Mexico there's no recycle program for old gadgets, but after read this post I'm gonna start to look for old cell phones to much Gold to be wasted... ^. ^;
My first and still current phone, my mom took it after she accidently washed her jacket with her phone in it... So she took my phone and put in her sim card in it, end of story -_- I'll probably get my own phone with better features soon though. My friend have IPhone and it does look great, not sure I'll get it until the price falls.
I've had a Ericsson SH888> Motorola Startec> Sony Ericsson T68i> Sony Ericsson Z800i and now the Sony Ericsson P1i. The first 2 phones were traded in and most likely ended up being recycled. I'm keeping the T68i for times when I need to be back serving the country like the other Singaporeans due to the 'no camers' rule in military camps. As for the Z800i I'm keeping it as a spare.
Normally here when we don't want a phone anymore we don't keep it, we drop them at those boxes as well but we never find a single one there XD only battery chargers. What people normally do is when we go buy a new phone we give them the old one and we get a 10€ discount on the new phone. Every mobile phone seller does that here, that's why people don't keep their old phones cause its very easy to get a new one here cause we don't have contracts, you charge the phone with money at an atm machine at free will ^^
I let my kid sis have my phone when I left SG and she totally trashed my phone to the point that they eventually got a new phone for her (grrr) and I liked my old phone too (2nd phone after the first phone was lost). When in canada, think first phone was sold, 2nd phone was crap, current phone's battery life is horrid too but I don't use the phone much anyways heh
Lol, nice business idea to put up bins like that and then extract all the copper and gold for profit. Though, people in Sweden are way too cheap to throw away their old phones. They will keep them forever in a drawer (or sell them). Just like we do with the plastic bags from the conveniece store. You do not live in a swedish household if you don't have a collection of plastic bags somewhere.
recycle them! in the US it's gotten a bit easier to recycle electronics. and phones r easy to mail/take to recycling places.
My first phone lasted 9 days and then died and the phone store wouldn't replace it because their '3 month warranty' only covers phones that are defective out of the box. My second phone was a polished turd that I enjoyed lighting on fire and watching it burn when I got my third phone, which I'm still using.
In my city there is no option for that in firt place. But thats is not an excuse, probably i keep it even with the recicler bin near.

I dont have a cell nor ever did I, would cost too much to get one so I'm trying to avoid getting one for aslong as I can. Instead, I prefer using MSN/Skype to contact other people. ^^;
here in korea they sell it and switch it to a new one. or they make the phone about to be replaced a bit cheaper when you give your old phone to them

i usually sell my used phones for a decent buck. the phone i'm using right now is a blackberry pearl 8100. sold my iphone 3 weeks ago and got an ipod touch. i've never heard of any ads for phone recycling programs here.
i just sell my old phone for a few bucks. good enough. it's been three years since i had a new phone. for some reason i couldn't let go of my p910i. now if only i'd get new phone to replace that.

you guys realize that by the time the iPhone comes out in Japan, there will be a lot better phones on the market right? unless Apple puts in some new snazzy features, i doubt it'll sell well as a phone. the two biggest reasons why i sold my iPhone was because of the battery life (i thought it was a defect, but happened twice) and the fact that it wasn't living up to my expectations as a cellphone. trust me when i say to pass on this one, unless you absolutely must must must have every single Apple product when they're launched.

Setsuna-san I find phones in Japan expensive haha. Way too much for something I will barely use... but like anywhere you can get some sort of contract that gives you the free phone or at least a small monthly fee to buy it over a couple of years.
I m still using a phone I got for FREE 6 years ago when I was forced to swtich my pager to handphone. If the world is full of peeps like me, the whole economy will collapse. But still I think the current state is over consumerism and wastage. BTW just a tidbit, durables such as electrical appliances were built to last forever pre 70s, until the makers realised that so doing will cause them to go bust eventually. Thus nowadays everything u own have atleast a "self-destruct" components which will cause your item to breakdown on average within 2-4 years.
ehh neither of the four. When I need a new mobile the dealer takes it and gives me a new one. I assume they will send it back for extraction of raw materials. Went in though and requested a new battery last week, $40 USD! I am still on my main phone, I don't need special features or packages, speed dials and a phone are all I need =)
I never throw away my old things. Either I just keep them or I pass them down to my relatives/siblings. I even still have my old 3210 nokia phone. heheh! I use it sometimes in case my phone's battery dies and I need to use one imediately.

@No one in particular Question for you, do phones in Japan come unlocked? Or do you need to do it yourself? I hate phones that are locked, it defeats the purpose of getting them in the first place. And because companies like Rogers have such a monopoly on the communication industry over here, most people need to sign a contract to buy a phone that has a cheap logo engraved on it or permanently installed in the firmware so that it loads up everytime the phone starts.
Recycling a Japanese phone to an American would be like one man's trash is another man's treasure. Except that treasure is useless (in the states). I've never trashed any of my old phones, I think they're just sitting in my car trunk dusting away. I currently have an Asian Samsung E870 that I'm about ready to change.
I don't have a retired phone. First one I ever got was a Sony Eriksson T105 from my uncle as a farewell/inheritance? gift, LOL.
people here usually trade in their old phones for new one every 2 years (more like 21 months?) me using Nokia 6210 now, passed my old Nokia 3210 to my dad, his ancient phone can be burnt in the canal already.
