Japan Police Chase

Folks who are thinking of moving to Japan will be delighted to hear that the tax you pay will be well spent.

"Police on Thursday arrested a wanted man after a two-hour car chase that involved 2,240 officers, 460 police cars and one helicopter. Hirofumi Fukuda, 27, who had been wanted for assaulting police officers on Jan 21, was arrested after a chase through central Osaka. Around 11 a.m., police received an emergency call saying that a car was driving recklessly, ignoring traffic lights. When a patrol car approached the vehicle in question, it took off.

Police were mobilized throughout the area and a helicopter called in. The chase ended when Fukuda's car crashed into a bridge column. He sustained light injuries but no one else was injured in the chase." - source Japan Today and Yahoo Japan.

Saw this news earlier on Japan Probe but didn't post it until member DRAGUN prompted me with this 13 second video footage of the chief officer who ordered the chase.
The car in the photo is a taken from Justin L Phillips Flickr pool. It's a Mazda RX-8 - more evidence of how well your tax will be spent.

Well I'm guessing its not worth having such police cars because technology breaks real easily these days. In my city, we have 2-3 dodge chargers as police cars, but all the others are impalas which are pretty trustworthy to my knowledge and once you put a turbo in those, they go quite fast.

Italy has a lambo police car, I don't have a link to it, but its quite popular and I'm guessing most of you heard of it.

What special car does your city use?

As of tax money, living in Canada, more specificaly in Quebec, the cold winters and hot summers take their toll on the road, if it wasn't for the roads being repaired every year in most city's, the government would have lots more money to invest in other sectors.

haha, i LOL'd at that part of the professional. BRING ME EVERYOOOONE!!! anyway, nice to know your tax dollars aren't going to waste (big sarcasm). i fail to see why they had to deploy that many cars, i mean they could've just set up some blockades and deployed some road spikes or something. And as for japanese cars, i remember that one scene in fast and furious: tokyo drift where they passed the police on the highway and the cops didn't even bother to chase them because they were going over 200mph, is that actually true? over here all the cop cars are sleepers, high performance but look like total crap. but i don't know how they handle as i've never driven or ridden in the back of one before, but no one is stupid enough to try to out run one.

The Dodge charger patrol cars LOOK cool, lol. But that many cars going after one guy? Talk aobut overkill. But at least they caught him, can you imagine if they had mobilized that big of a force and lost their man? That would be so bad.

Hm, i don't know if such an car is necessary in citys with alot of traffic jam.

But in Germany (Bavaria) we have use normaly (we also have older cars) cars like BMW 520d Touring 177PS 224km/h max.
http://polizeiautos.de/pics/bay-einsatz-auslieferung-bmw5er-bepo-gruen.jpg

Or sometimes the BMW 530d 235PS 245km/max. (i believe mainly used for our highways)

In Germany they use mostly Volkswagen and BMW for police service. Well I think they were rageous because colleagues of them where killed, thus I can totally understand why they used EVERYONE(!) to chase this man.

Scientist, unemployed.
My father's police department (Mount Morris, MI) did a car update a few years ago. Yes, if you turbo an Impala they go fast, but the new Ford cars they use (I can't remember what they are) go much faster. As for using everyone possible, how far did he get? I know here if someone crosses township or county lines, the new jurisdiction adds their own people to the chase.

However our police bike squad just upgraded their rides to Fireblade

While I can't speak for the rest of our country (US), I can speak for our state and my local region which is managing money extremely well.

Our local police force are all loaded with Dodge Chargers, more specifically the state highway patrol.

However, nation-wise we have a bunch of imbeciles who probably never stepped inside a finance and/or economics class.

I tell you one thing, come start of 2009 hopefully we finally get someone DECENT in office and get rid of the joke we currently have.

BMW's for police cars? Are they cheap in Germany, because in most countries that would be a total waste of money for police cars.

I always find it strange when I go back to visit Portugal and see the taxis are all Mercedes, whereas in Toronto they are all low end cars and always look totally beat up.

2,240 officers, 460 police cars and one helicopter to catch one guy in high speed? Well since it was inside a city it can sure be hard but was it really needed so many officers and cars to capture on guy?
I don't know about there but here most of the cars for high speed chases are undercover high speed cars, I remember going on the highway one day on route to Lisbon and then one guy passes by me at least with a speed around 200km/h few seconds another car passes by at even higher speed which was an undercover car, I never saw something so fast on the road in my life.

I wonder what it would have been like to be a pedestrian watching lines of cops cars trailing a single offender? I bet I know how it went. The guy would speed through intersections, while the cops would patiently wait for the light to go green. Damn that speeder and his genius~!

Well spent tax payers money, in my country? Not quite so. Most of the money either goes to the politician's stomach or to ambitious megastructure projects that tends to become a mere white elephant before or after completion. All that money should've been used to maintain existing infrastructure, further aiding the poor, or heck, with all that money, make education free.

I think Gary Oldman's performance in that movie was a bit over the top and too eccentric for my tastes.

As far as I know, most southeast-Asian countries governments are too corrupt and tied up in red tape, Indonesia and the Philippines for example. As for here in the US, I'm pretty sure it's the same but they don't make it too obvious until you read about it in the papers. Here in New Jersey alone, we have our fair share of corrupt politicians.

On a little side note, I want to drive that Japanese police car, it looks awesome.

wow that police car looks amazing, so futuristic. Well taxes here in my state are relatively spent well, we have health insurance and financial support for people who don't make enough money and there is increase in road constructions, modernizations, and size increase. However, there is still not enough money and they increased sales tax :-(

Best movie of all time. As for mobilizing a small army to chase one guy, Im impressed. I know that when someone gets pulled over in my neighborhood, about four police cars usually appear in two minutes to "help out".
As for modified cop cars, I had cop friend show off a charger. But most of them drive around in new Chevy Tahoes.

THIS IS MADNESS!

Anyway over here, taxpayer's monies are being spent on unnecessary stuffs like building lift extensions to apartment blocks, destroy pavements that are not so old and re-tiling them, invest in the military which is pointless cause our country is so small it can be invaded in under one day and so on.

So now you know your money's worth.

i do admit, the rx-8 police car is very nice looking,

however in the US, all law enforcement automobiles seems to originate from US car makers.

In LA, we used to have the Chevy Caprice/Crown Victoria, now they are slowly converting to Dodge Chargers

Something interesting to note is that in the USA, a new car development firm is in the works (Carbon Motors) that is planning on building police-specific vehicles.

These cares will take into mind all the considerations and important key factors that make a police car effective.

Though, I'm told that the costs are going to be a little more expensive than those Chevy Impalas that are being refit into police cars ... but the benefit is heavy a lighter, more effective policemobile...

If you like this movie "Leon: the professional" fom the french director Luc Besson, I advice you tp watch "Nikita". It is from the same diector with a similar atmosphere. It is in french tough (it was before he went to Hollywood and made Leon, 5th element, Jeanne of Arc the Messenger...) but it has a small role with Jean Reno.
Btw, I believe this actor is quite popular in Japan.

For Nikita, I know there was a TV show spin off this movie but I can assue you the movie is waaaaay better !

They're well-spent by our government officials (especially our lovely president) -- you can see them riding their luxury cars, vacationing in one of their many houses, painting the town red with different young women, etc.
