The CEO of MacDonalds Japan found himself making an official apology after it was discovered that 4 franchise chains tampered with the sell-by date on salads. (source)

The boss of the MacDonalds franchise chains said that the salads were going to be thrown away (which was a waste) so they changed the labels to make the products look fresh and were able to sell the stale salads to customers.

This is not the only type of tampering that goes on with food products labels in Japan. In an effort to reduce costs, scrap meat has been labeled as beef, vegetables from China have been labeled as domestic etc etc.
Does tampering of food product labels happen in your region?

BTW, the pictures in this article are of the freebies that come with the kids meal - this time round its PuriCure goodies for the girls and Blue Dragon for the lads.

I cut fast food out of my food pyramid 2 years ago. Now, I can't even walk into a McDonald's without covering up my mouth. It feels like the whole environment is full of grease. Why do people even buy salads from a burger joint? I don't trust these franchises anymore.

Never heard official stuff, but probably happens.
Police recently discovered some major milk retailer to be altering milk by mixing cheap chemicals in it... compared to that tampering food labels are close to nothing.

Also, I've seen several times major supermarket franchises selling stuff that were rotten and with their waranties void.

I try not to eat any fast food. The places I steer clear of are CrapDonalds, Burger Fling, and any other HUGE major fast food chains. DQ is my number 1 here in Indiana cause their food actually tastes good unlike BK or MD since they taste like cardboard.

I gotta say, that sucks. Now, is it really worth it to sell bad food now to get customers to think that the food will still be bad later? It may be a waste, but it looks like these guys couldn't think of the many alternatives available not waste it. Hah, that's less customers for you, McD's, and more for your rivals... at least in Japan, that is. lol.

I know food tampering happens. I dont think most people have any idea of what actually goes on in the food industry. Since I grew up around it, I know what foods to avoid, and also what stories not to tell people. Lets just say stay away from Halibut. Ok? Ok. Have a nice day.

(Sorry in advance for the rude, unusual expression tonight. My dark side has suddenly resurfaced)

If that CEO felt sorry for waste, he should have eaten this salad himself! What a dumba** who literally played with the term "Junk food".
Being at the end of the food chain (customer) can truly suck. We generally pay high prices (what with all those taxes?), we only have the option to buy or not buy and they dare do that to us in the name of profit?! Damn them! We can't even have fresh food to begin with?

(Silences dark version of self)

On a related topic, I hope this won't end as empty promises (which is often the norm)

As a mainland chinese, i have to say, there are too many prejudice on this country and people here. in most your guy's eyes behind colored glasses, china is a country of monsters, no human right, everything from this country is dangerous, every chinese people here are brainwashed. however, that's far away from the truth, for example, the cardboard steam bum was finally proved a faked news, and the vegetable from china is not poison, even though it's commonly means lower price, they are just be labelled as MADE IN JAPAN BY JAPANESE to get a higher price.
China is a great nation with a stupid system but this is grounded by china's unique culture and history, no one can not change it within one day or one effort, but believe me, things are getting change and the system will eventually evolved by our new generation, emotionally i really don't like you guys act like a judge, as if there is nothing good in China, as if living in your contry is just like living in the heaven.

Samp+, what I meant by the "norm" in my comment was how beautiful the speech and official declarations are usually made by politicians (of every country, state/province/district/city/town, etc.) but changes are lacking in the end.

If you saw that against an attack against PRC, I admit this was a mistake from me to not having clarified my point.

I just hope this worldwide quest for food safety and hygiene will be effectively done. I feel this should have been done long ago.

@samp+ dude.....china rocks. It has some of the richest cultural history around, plus there is so much cool stuff that comes out of china. For one the film industry is really great, I generally watch more Chinese/HK film than hollywood crap or the like. Also I've meet so many fellow students that are from all over china, as above GREAT people. All this combined makes me want to take a 6month trip over to the mainland to experience the culture for myself...

*ends China rocks rant*

...But as other people have said the article isn't suggesting china is in the wrong, just McDonalds JP.

Yes food tampering is at a high in the United States. The USDA (united states department of agriculture) does not do their job mostly because of corrupt members and a lack of funding.

I have heard stories of people finding machine bolts in hamburger meat sold at supermarkets. I only buy food that is made in this country and I avoid processed foods such as processed hamburger meat. It is a huge problem that the government fails to address: ignoring the Ecoli outbreaks is NOT taking care of the people.

I could go on about it but I recommend reading "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser to get the full scope of it.

I have always trusted goods from Japan due to their high quality albeit sometimes a hefty pricetag. Our local Wallgreens imports Japanese so I am happy ^^.

In short: do not buy from fast food chains such as McDonalds. The food is tainted with schtuffs and is designed to make YOU fat. I dropped the stuff and for over a year I have eaten 2 meals at a fast food restauraunt: both times requiring food at breakfast time (McDonalds breakfasts are not as harmful). Do not eat from them and stick to the stuff that comes from this Earth. Don't believe me that the food is tainted? Read Fast Food Nation for yeself if you can get a hold of it.

The most I hear about tampering is using CO to make meat appear redder--maybe that's because I live in California where lots of large farms are.

To the guy below--that's not food tampering, but negligence. It's a problem with quality control, not trying to sell old trash as new.

One time there was a chicken head in some ones chicken nuggets. Another time there was an actual finger in some ones food at Burger King. A cheap store near me had a thing of fruit roll ups that expired in 1976 >.< Then my school has had questionable food in the past.
