Believe it or not, I've only really started to use Torrents for my open source downloads lately.

I learn that the torrent client should be kept open for as long as possible - I make sure that I leave my client on throughout the night to give back what I've taken.

What I was wondering though is how many of you leave your client open and for how long? Is there anybody out there who just downloads and then shuts down the client?
BTW, my choice of client is the open source Transmission. If you have any clients to recommend to your fellow otaku (or torrent sites for that matter) then please feel free to do so ^^

I usually upload when certain websites like BoxTorrents enforce a policy to upload just as much as you download. It's a good way to stop leechers. If it's a file that was either hard to find or I enjoyed, I usually upload those too.

I heard that it's dangerous to be a seeder, and besides when I seed it slows down m other downloads. My client is always opeem. but because I'm too lazy to have to keep reopening it. I remove things when they're done.

Another recommendation for Azureus, plenty of options for advanced users wishing for more control over their downloads.

Internet Download Manager (IDM) is great for managing direct downloads and maximising your connections download speed.

i use utorrent...pronounced mutorrent, simple and easy and has some nifty functions. as for how long i live my client on, well it depends what i'm downloading and the seeder/leecher ratio. for private sites i tend to leave the client on for as long as possible to maintain my seed/leech ratio, for animes, i tend to use mirc way more often than torrent, and also purchase the dvds of course. my computer is on for most of the day and utorrent is almost always on.

My client of choice is Azureus, and I do my best to maintain at least a 1:1 for most files. Luckily, I had enough spare parts to build a box that does my bidding for torrent activity...keeps the gaming/3d modeling box available for what it is meant to do. For those of you that have enough parts to build a second system, that would be a good way to go. Wasting processor cycles on torrenting takes away from your fun time! ^^; Haha. Tokyo Toshokan does quite well for my anime/manga needs with rare visits elsewhere.

I'd give Azureus a thumbs-up too (assuming from your screen grab you're using a Mac - although it's fine on the PC, too).

You'll find it all depends on the torrent tracker. Some will eventually delete your account if you don't at least get up to a 1:1 share ratio. Others don't give a toss.

utorrent for myself, I usually give at least 50% or more back basically because I still have other torrents working.

Sites for me, mininova, baka-updates, BlackCats for the most part get me around.

Emule helps me get what I can't =D

the corruption part may be due to hard disk failure, its usually a sign telling you that you need to replace your hard drive before it crashes on you without warning and you lose all your saved data. your ISP may also be blocking the use of bittorent and thats why they aren't loading for you.

utorrent all the way!

As for how long I keep mine running, it depends. I have my client turn on at startup so as soon as my PC starts up i'm downloading/uploading.

These days, I tend to keep my PC on for some time so I can stream my music from my home PC to my work one from time to time, assuming my connection doesn't screw up, like it has been doing recently...

i don't feel the lag from seeding cos usually turn it off in the day, and turn on all the torrents when I go to bed. a newly released episode should be done by the time I wake up, with more than 150% given back to the torrent community.

is all good :D

I've tried a few clients but utorrent is not only the easiest to use, but it's very small and has so many nifty options :3
I would seed more than 100% but it seems my isp counts uploads as part of my bandwidth limit ;_; so as it is, I generally seed small files 'till 100-110% and big files around 10-20%.
And I always go to http://isohunt.com first (used to be mininova.org) before checking smaller torrent communities or p2p (emule).

your download pic reminds me of how police recently like busted some pedophile molester by de-blurring a photo. I wonder what they would see if they used it on you. I would assume those are the family videos you always like to share. And "family" pics too right ;)

BTW why would utorrent be mutorrent? Wouldn't it make more sense to pronounce it like "micro"torrent as in micrometer or "u"torrent?

@nara,

Since danny is based in Japan, I would assume that he would use p2p programs like winny and share for his anime fix, or he just digitally records it off the tv.

Either way, those would be much faster than torrent, since ppl tend to get their anime from the 2 p2p programs i mentioned and then torrent it for everyone else.

I use uTorrent. The biggest problem is it slows my web surfing down dramatically, so I turn it off when I'm surfing. I leave it on though at work, but turn it off at night because I'm on a laptop and I like to turn that off at night, unless it's winter time, then I might use my laptop for a room heater.

I use Azureus. It's not nearly as pretty as Transmission, but is more featureful. Azureus had nasty memory leak problems on OS X, but upgrading to Leopard fixed that for me.

I seed at bare minimum as much as I downloaded (unless there's just no one downloading from me), and always try for at least twice as much. Really, I try to seed for whatever I've downloaded for as long as the primary uploaders need the help.

I also try to continually seed something I really enjoy and want to share that is also older and lacks sufficient seeders. Balance is important: Seed to many things, and the bandwidth you provide for any particular torrent is actually worthless (not to mention it's way too much TCP traffic that can't be justified for your throughput), but seed nothing and torrents die as soon as their initial popularity is over.

My main usage for Internet is actually bittorrent. I let if open 24/7. And most sites I do use (PS2, animes) have a ratio system, so I have to keep the ratio high (around 1.4) for each torrent I download.

ever since a local anime distribution company here started catching people who downloaded animes illegally with bit torrent and threatening them with legal action unless a reimbursement sum of around US$2000 is paid, people here are avoiding bit-torrent for downloading animes. most either watch it online via streaming sites or go for direct download.

I try to seed at least 2x but since I have a laptop I can't really leave it on all night. I did with my last one and it lasted less than 2 years. Currently my ratio is 1.3x. I seed less than 2x if I am downloading a lot at one time or the file just is not being downloaded.

Bittorrent is my exclusive distribution network for fansubs it's either that or IRC and you really take a security risk mingling with the hax0rs to get your fansub fix. I've been known to do it but only with a virtual version of the latest beta OS to minimize the exploit footprint. Wow who knew downloading fansubs could be so much fun!

My record so far was constantly downloading for a month non stop without turning off my computer. I was a anime freak back then. My numbers of downloads could go up to 20 or more at one go. But that craze kinda died down for quite a while ago.

I personally would recommend Utorrent for a BT client as it is clean and fast to use. Have tried most of the others but some of them are either too slow or too difficult to use.

I use uTorrent, but it's Windows only. I use it because it's extremely light-weight and it has great features such ass RSS subscription (auto download!) and something called Web UI that allows you to manage your torrents from a different computer.

As for how long I keep it open, well, the unwritten rule is that you have to seed 200%.

My upstream cap is awfully low (256 kb/s) while my upstream is capped at 2 mbit. It's literally impossible to share as much as I've taken unless I'm loading awfully slow and while my torrent client is running, most of my internet activity has to shut down (I'm lucky if I can browse some sites at mediocre speed, playing online games or watching streams is not possible), so I have it up whenever I'm not doing anything that requires my connection. My ratio, depending on the speed I can download from, usually is around 0.6 or so.

Oh and I use uTorrent, it's without a doubt the best client that I personally have used so far.

I'd really love to keep the ratio 100% 100%, download stuff and then share them for at least 2 weeks or so.

But what really happens is: My HDD is filled up all the time. So I have to download stuff, burn them on DVDs or something, just so I can get new stuff.

I usually leave stuff sharing, so I just select the ones that has fewer seeds and lots of leechers.

Oh, I've been using bittorrent for a long time... since the time there were no clients (only the original bittorrent that looked like a download window).

After clients appeared, I first used Azureus, then switched to uTorrent, which I'm still using today.

Before that? DC++, eMule, eDonkey, LimeWire, Kazaa, Morpheus, Napster, IRC and before that I remember using some sort of virtual webspace where tons of anime fans would share stuff. Forgot the name right now.

If not for those, I wouldn't be here probably. Because I wouldn't have gotten into anime and japanese culture, and would have never been into Japan...

Since we have really bad limits on upload here in Belgium, I just can't share much. It's getting better, but it could be more. Would be most willing to share, if only I could... Because if you reach your upload limit, your whole connection is put on smallband (down & up). But it's getting better, but still expensive, in comparison to other countries...

uTorrent for Windows clients and Transmission for Mac Users. That's the way to go ;)

Well uploading is a bit dangerous... in switzerland the only thing that makes you "not legal" is uploading. As long as you only download and don't upload they can't do you anything... pretty weird but true. Law is not really adapted here about all the P2P stuff.

I usually give back about 150% or more. This is mainly because my upload speed is almost always a bit higher than my download speed. So I usually don't have to leave it open for more than a minute after my download finnishes.

I use Utorrent

My share ratio is usually 300% or more as I believe that bittorrent is about sharing and community building.

I use utorrent, best on I've used so far.

I try to give back whenever possible, but most other orientals I know aren't quite as nice.

I use BitComet.

I don't keep my client up that long due to bandwidth constraints. If I had faster internet at home like they have in Japan then I'm not closing my client at all. heheh! Sadly though I (or we in the Philippines) don't have that kind of bandwidth luxury. I do keep it up whenever I don't use the net.

I haven't used transmission yet, but I've been using Azureus for years now on both PC and Mac.

They added a bunch of features that I don't use, but the advanced mode lets you choose what files you want to download from within the torrent. (like one video from a batch torrent)

Along with a lot of other customization, that feature really helps out a lot. Don't have to download the whole torrent, just for one file : >

I don't seed. I'm a leecher.
Do i feel guilty?
Not one bit.
My client's Utorrent. It used to be Azureus, but I can't work it anymore. It freezes up on me when I open it.

Oh no... Could that be the consequence of my leeching sin???

I use flash get, since it serves as a nice torrent downloader (as good as any i have seen atleast), and at the same time it is also a download accelerator for normal downloads. I never quite before i have atleast seeded as much as i have gotten.
Unless its mega downloads like naruto and bleach where its pointless.

I use isohunt or torrentspy to find them then bitlord to bring them down.

I used to use the Bittorrent client until I switched over to utorrent, which is absolutely amazing. As for websites I generally use isohunt and mininova for all the things I'll need.
(ID #63486) Posted on 2007/11/13 21:11
Why?
µTorrent on Windows, Azureus on everything else.

I usually seed for 200%, and I often keep a close eye on torrents with few seeds in case I need to save some peers from unfinished downloads.

I use bitcomet and have my settings set to stop sharing after dl/ul are 1:1 because sites like demonoid want you to have a 1:1 ratio i think. Most other files, like the ones I get off tokyotosho or mininova, I just stop after I get my file since my roommates complain I'm slowing down their gaming.

too bad I can't use torrentspy anymore. i think they stopped allowing US users.

So sad to see so much Leechers.

I'm actually not on the pool range, so i put 100%/100%.

My utorrent is actually on 1/2 rate, I get it, and "send full" for 2 peoples.

I watched so many Anime Groups that closes their torrents system just for those leechers... well, it's a basic tip for life, get what u need and give everything that u can...

I am too worried about getting a virus to use any torrent program. Plus I currently live in the US, so everything is illegal now.

BT is getting dangerous, it's a bad time to be getting on board. some ISPs are screwing with uploads to limit them and most clients are vulnerable. I use Bitcomet atm however I will probably switch to something
