Presents in Japan

Tis nearly that time of year where we give presents to our loved ones. But how much does a Japanese woman expect you to spend on her?

A survey conducted by Printemps Ginza reveals that Japanese women expect a present that costs an average of 46,000 yen (415 USD).

The survey also reveals that shes willing to spend an average of 26,529 yen (239 USD) for her man.
How much do you spend on your wo/man for Christmas?

BTW, like the way "Last Christmas" by Wham is played often during the merry season, the following "Christmas Eve" by Tatsuro Yamashita is played everywhere across Japan - the theme song used for many years in JRs commercials.
And Whams "Last Christmas" below for those who are in the merry mood.
The girl in this post is Naoko from the game Lili:miesta - click on "Gallery" half way down the screen to see her in action. News item picked up at Johoya.

my Japanese girl says she doesn't want much but give it a week or so before x-mas.. she'll hint that she wants to shop like crazy with my money. I don't mind it though.

Haha, I haven't heard the classic "JR Toukai" catch in many a year.

Japanese TV in the late 80s and early 90s was really unlike anything else.

As for presents, well... I suppose it's an advantage of being single that I get to spend a little more money on myself.

Don't mean to double post but I spend very close to the survey's amount so as for what Japanese girls want, its very accurate.

Ditto to what Mac said.

Tis' the season to be jolly after all. Unless your made of money you won't be too jolly having to fork out that much for gifts for just one person. XD

Alas, I am a poor college student so I can't afford anything beyond $30 or so...

However, the greater problem is finding something for a guy. I can come up with a list of dozens of items for girl friends, but an utter blank for my boyfriend.

A christmas present?
I would normally say:
"Having me and my love is the most valuable thing you will ever get!"

Shoot, no wonder none of my dates were successful ._.

Hey I am still single here, nothing wrong with that =D

around 400 USD?? That is a bit steep considering my pockets are empty. As a full time college student I can't juggle a job and my education (You try juggling a 8-10 hour shift with Calculus and tell me if it is easy or not =p).

Plenty of money to spend on myself though! Although gifts are very thoughtful and may come in handy, I like to use my hobby as a means of a get in, get out fast X-mas gift! Unless someone "insists" upon a gift, from now on I usually send completed model ships to relatives and major family. Whether they hate it or like it, they will think of me when looking at it =D. Also saves me money down the line too: High end kits usually cost under $200 USD.

Christmas has come early this year around the Allentown and Reading area of Pennsylvania. I was in three hobbyshops (Gosh I need a life) over the past week and all three were packed. Still though, this means more gifts for me =D I think Super Mario Galaxy recently came out? I think I will ask for it for Christmas from my folks seeing that I am hard pressed on money right now.

I love Christmas, and unfortunately I'm generous to a fault. Between GF, family & friends the bills wind up to be around 2K in Jan. Esp when loved ones get multiple gifts. Of course I love receiving just as much.

Well I see I exceed the average price expected. Now I know why she keeps me around! ^^; I bet Japanese woman are above average compared to other woman.

No no, seriously it's so easy to spend a lot of money on gifts for my fiancee. I always like to buy her nice things and since she enjoys cooking so much... Baking and cooking items are as bad as my hobbies! I thought noting could top photography and Otaku items...

funny how everyone would always want to receive more than they are willing to shell out. human nature I guess. I wonder though, why the amoount on the survey on how much she(Japanese women) is willing to spend isn't a round number.
btw about christmas songs, has it start airing on your local radio or in malls there? I never noticed since I never turned on the radio and was concentrating on currency conversions while at the malls there. lol. here where I'm at they start playing those songs on October.

  Good luck with your fetish.
Just date an Asian girl and get it over with... i guess if you can that is. if not just keep ordering pixelated J-porn from J-list. good luck with spending all your cash.

Read my description - LOL

Well, if I had someone to give the present, I wouldn't care spending much as long as I HAD much to spend.
But I think the real value is not on how much you spend on the present... sometimes it's better to give a cheap present that you made yourself than giving something very expensive you spent 5 minutes searching on a website, know what I mean?

I don't like Christmas nowadays, its waaaay too commercial for my liking. No matter where you turn, you see adverts practically ordering you to BUY THIS EXPENSIVE AND COMPLETELY USELESS CR*P THIS CHRISTMAS NOW! Sheesh.

Also, I don't think I really want a girlfriend either. Sure its nice to have someone by your side and all, but when I think that would mean I would lose my free time, be out of cash (by presents for the girlfriend, no doubt) and would have to go through all the associated drama that comes with having a girlfriend, then I'd rather not. :(

I've never bought presents for anyone ever. It always ends up that someone gives $20 to someone else and then they ust give it back a few months later. What's the point in a $20 loan you didn't ask for? >.>

My family doesn't exactly have what one would call 'Christmas Spirit', everyone just buys each other stuff for their Birthday and Christmas because it's what everyone else does.

Hm, I always heard about how any non-FTG female otaku could get an otaku boyfriend with zero effort, but living in the middle of nowhere, all I've seen are immature narutards. Gao.

Well, I can't imagine trying to choose a present for a boyfriend, I never was good at shopping. I absolutely love recieving gifts, though I can't imagine expecting a $300+ present from a BF. Personally, I'd take a moe figure over jewelry any day. If I had to choose something with a steeper pricetag, I'd actually be thrilled to get an eroge, lol. :D

I usually get around 30-50 dollar gifts, maybe even more. I'm planning to buy a Wii for my dad and split the cost with my brother for Christmas though lol. But we both know that we will end up using it the most ^^, just hope that we can find one when Christmas comes around.

I'm just a eternal loner. While not caring about looking for a girlfriend anymore and not celebrating Christmas at all, I guess the good parts are that I don't get stressed about that kind of things.
I have improved a lot though, especially about chores (living alone helps!) and life pondering.

Money is not everything either. The idea that societies make you feel obliged to buy this and that to bring and maintain happiness... quite idiotic if you ask me, right?
If there are no true feelings behind exchanging gifts which cost this or that, there is no point in following the established customs like stray lambs...

I don't know, maybe not going into relationships = no suffering for self and/or the others, even if I want to find my own happiness someday...

I don't ever expect gifts from anybody.

*Cough of arrogance* Ha! Most of you guys are sooo unlucky! I usually spend around $200-250 on my girlfriend, which includes apparel (I love shopping for girl clothing... that's right, she's my dress-up doll *insert evil laugh* hahahahahaha!!!!), anime, manga and video games. So most of it is sorta like a present for both of us. YAY for ME!!!!
