I hate sleeping more than 5 hours. Makes me feel like I'm wasting time. I try to sta up as much as possible, though school stress has led me to longer sleep lately.
I often get by with 6 hours of sleep as well, although if what you heard about sleeping less meant dying early is true. I'd have to start getting my full 8 hours. ^^ no sense in punishing oneself to make money if one can't taste the fruit of ones labor by dying. ^^
5-6 hours if i'm lucky, i just have to much to entertain myself with. If i slept and did school work, and that was all i did, it would drive me insane.
I was sleeping around 5 hours a night up until a week ago. I'm too young to do that anymore. ^^; All I wanted to do was sleep during the day and my performance sucked. Also I wasn't such a wonderful person to work with... ^^; I can have a really short and quick temper. Now I'm getting about 6 hours and I find I wake earlier and I'm starting to get more done. My performance is better since my mind is well rested. I also been getting more play time. ^o^ You know, the harder you work the harder you need to play. Longevity runs on both sides of my family. Men also look younger than their age. No I wouldn't sacrifice years to get more done by sleeping less. I have so much I want to do! I plan to be alive for a long time. After all, I have such a wonderful woman to spend the future with.
Yeah, I've got about the same schedule, midnight to 5-6am. However, nightly sleep isn't the only factor to consider. While I sleep 5-6 hours, my technical position isn't the most stressful either. So I don't feel dead-tired or feel like I've shortened my life span... In fact, during the dot-com crash, I tried high-pay, high-competition and high-anxiety in Real Estate. But after two successful home transactions, I knew the stress wasn't for me or my health. Plus nowadays, running the treadmill nightly also helps to balance my heart, mind and body! =)
Less than 8~9 hours and I get sleepy after lunch in classes and sometimes on weekends I tend to go to bed at 2~3 am than wake up at 11~noon :P
I think i heard about a study recently that said if you slept too much you die earlier as well.
Most of us here sleep for 6 hrs only, trying to watch anime until late in the night.:P A typical office job starts at 9 or 8 in Singapore, but seldom does it end as late as midnight. the Japanese are really hardworking.
A human should get 10 hours of sleep which will then tell the body to start repairing itself while you rest and allow for memory to store itself within your mind, according to some psychologist. So sleep will allow you to heal and help with memory, so its good to study for a test little by little over a period of days so it can store itself within your mind rather than cramming the night before. I know this but I sleep about 8 hours a night, need to get up early and leave for school the next day; on weekends I sleep less though.
I sleep about 6 hours per night, basically because work (9-18), college (19-23) and transit time take most of my time. I sleep a lot on weekends, but as the week goes by I increasingly start to feel like human shit. Since I can't get anything done right while deprived of sleep, I wouldn't trade life span to spend more time awake.
If I don´t get 8 hours of sleep a day I get sleepy all day long. Also, it´s cumulative. Meaning if I don´t get 8 hours of sleep several days in a week, chances are I´ll spend my weekend sleeping to recover. I know this because I had an year sleeping only 6 hours on weekdays... and then, on weekends I would do nothing but sleep. I guess this is different for each and everyone... there´s not a standard for everyone. Some people can fully recover with half and hour of sleep. Quick naps for me just makes me more sleepy. My eyes will go red, I´ll have pains all over my body, sometimes headaches, and my brain just won´t work if I don´t sleep well. That´s why I´m kinda afraid to move to Japan... I want to go with some adequate job for me already in mind. Only good thing for me is, when I´m on a whim, I can go like 2 or 3 days without sleep and without feeling too bad. But of course after that, I´ll end up sleeping 16hrs straight (already did some times). But I love sleeping. Can´t deny.
I try to get 8 hrs a night otherwise I get very tired around lunch time. But the more important thing then time is quality of sleep right now I am getting about 9hrs a night but because I am not sleeping where I normally do I am not sleeping as well (getting tired around 6pm or so.) If I was only getting 6 hrs like some of you I would not be a very good person to be around. I am very grumpy it I don't get enough sleep.
I need at least a *consistent* eight hours to function properly, possibly nine or ten at times to be at my best. I never get it, though! Most of the time I'm lucky to catch up with one full night a week and a nap tucked in somewhere during the weekend. When I get less than that regularly, I'm a zombie. If I get much less than that at all, I get sick. I'm pretty much always a sick zombie. My primary roadblock between me and more sleep isn't having too much to do, it's having a very picky body clock. My body likes to sleep from early morning to late morning (at what should be my bedtime, my body starts to wake up, but even if I can get to sleep before then, I won't rest until later), yet my present employment requires me to wake up in the early morning, ensuring that I never get the sleep I need. Even worse, waking up at that hour (no matter how much sleep I've had) throws some kind of switch in my body that makes me ill. Daylight saving time makes it worse! I used to take solace in the fact that I at least had several hours each evening before I can sleep to put to good use, but after years of this I'm too much of a zombie at that point in the day to even watch TV with that time, much less code. I do have my goals that drive me, though. I won't be in this job very long, and I'll be making my own way in the world. It's a bit of a catch 22 (I need to manage my own time to have the time/energy to build my business, yet until I build my business I can't manage my own time), but I'll conquer it soon enough. Your own success serves as a constant reminder that my goals are attainable, and I must thank you for it. (Side note: When submitting my post after following the post comment link from Google's RSS reader, it asked me to re-enter the captcha (which I entered correctly before, I can see), and the text of my comment had all the quotation marks escaped with backslashes. I'm not sure how much of that is useful information to you, but I figured you might care to know.)
zzzzzz...
i have been sleeping a lot lesser recently

Being a freelancer I usually sleep eight hours, go to bed late and get up late. If I sleep too long I tend to get a nasty migraine in the evening. But I'd prefer to only sleep 6-7 hours to have more time for other things. Though I like it when girls on the train next to me fall asleep and drop their head on my shoulder I also think that the overwork and sleep deficit in Japan is part reason for some of the problems that happen here, e.g. the many suicides.
ouch, well i tend to go to sleep late myself just because I do not want tomorrow to come soon hehehe. I usualy get aorund 7, but all depends on when I have to go to work. I will be starting a new job soon where I have to be there by 9:30am which is normal really and leave 5:00pm, this is very much a normal working day over here.
i always had this discussion with my colleagues at work. they said that the best time to sleep is 11pm to 4am. cos thats the time ur body regenerates and repairs. for those thinking that 4 hrs of sleep is enuff, u'll partly right. a chinese philosopher said that 4 hrs of sleep is gd for ur mind. means u get refresh easily. but it's harmful for ur body in the long run.. of cos, 8 hrs is the optimal sleeping time. if u get less than that, i suggest u to take a nap during work. 20 min the maximum. google up "afternoon naps" to get the full report on the adventages of afternoon naps.
I spent 5-6 hours on bed everyday. I have school in the days sometime till 6pm. After reaching home, I do my revision and other stuffs till late. eg, bloging, gaming. it's like 2am everytime i sleep
I go crazy if I don't have 12 hours of sleep... _> ...crazy.
My sleeping hour was 5 ~ 7 hours, but usually is 6 hours... If i sleep longer i will get very tire... ;)
My sleep patterns are haywire. During working weekdays I sleep about 4-5 hours a night. Then when the weekend hits I recoup with 8+ hours per night. No wonder my weekends seems so short.
I admit sometimes I wish we had those 'company afternoon nap' sessions I hear about over there in Japan. That would be sweeeeeet.
5 in bed, another 3 or 2 hour in a boring H.schoo class ;) :P
I don't sleep, I wait.
I work during the night, so I sleep during the day. Usually I sleep 5 or 6 hours, sometimes take a nap during the night on work, if I can, you know :)
just wondering... if we calculate the total time between the people that get enough sleep until they die minus people that sleep less until they die, are they working hours same ? or they have more working hours (for people that have enough sleep)? if they working hours same, that mean you get longer life for sleeping anyway as human, yeah we need sleep, either u want it or not, lately i play gameonline and that reduce my sleep time by around 3 hours and its effect my health, recently i got cold easily.... somehow i have reschedule my daily life ..
I have colleagues sleeping in the studio every night. For working hours 10am to midnight is about right, although we start around 12. I get about 6 hours of sleep.
I used to sleep 5~6 hours only before hitting my 20th birthday, but after hitting my 20th mark, I'd usually sleep: -5-8 hours weekdays -10-12 hours weekends Whether I'll be able live longer or not, well... thats another story.
I'm more of a nocturnal person and go through bouts of insomnia. Generally these days, I get 5 hrs of sleep at night, with a 1~2 hr nap after i get back from work, so 6~7 hrs a day. Any less and I really start to struggle later on in the week, as I discovered when I went a week with only 4~5 hrs a day. Weekends i sleep around 12hrs, mainly to catch up with what I missed on weekdays. If i don't get enough, i get really cranky...
at an average, i usually get 5-8 hours sleep ^___^ i usually get disoriented and very cranky whenever i get less than 3 hours of sleep not to mention that my brain is dead for a couple of minutes lol XD
It's 8 hours a day for me... I have done with less in the past, but it's best, I think, to let your body tell you how much sleep you need. Alarm clocks are a necessary evil for working people, I suppose.
i wake up every weekday morning at 7am to go to work. got home at 7pm. after dinner and a shower at 8pm, i'll be surfing the internet till midnight or 1am.
so that's about 6 hrs of sleep for me.
i find sleeping a waste of time as i have lots of personal things to do. ('~')

I usually sleep between 4 and 6 hours. I get up at 6am and go to sleep at 1-2 am. Not because I have to work or study though, just because I don't feel like wasting time sleeping and missing the opportunity to do something else. Even though I feel sleepy at work, a 20min nap on the way home allows me to endure it. The down side to it is that I spend most of my weekends in a comatose state.
I try to get as much sleep as I can, usually between 7 to 8 hours a night. The time I go to bed and get up varies though. Sometimes I go to bed really late but get up really late, too. I'm sure my whole body clock is out of whack...
I only get 5 and sometimes below 4 but thats only because i am very busy daily so computers/work takes all my time away. Good old energy drinks
i'm a hypersomniac so you can expect to find me sleeping more often than i'm awake
If they work so much in Japan, then where do they find time to watch Anime and play video games?
I sleep 7-8 hours plus 2 hrs. afternoon nap. I can work from home :) This is my first comment here and I'd like to say that Danny's blog is great especially for an otaku in training like myself.
sleeping its a wasting time but it feel good for me less 5 hours bed time in the week
My average sleeping hours are about 8. It depends on the day of the week and on the season. In winter I usually need more sleep - in summer less.
I know that sleeping is a waste of time, but I just can't work good if I haven't got my 8 hours of sleep
I usually sleep 4-5hours a day these last 2 months due to me having classes. But without it I sleep around 6-7hours. I try not to sleep more than 10hours as it is a waste of time and there are a lot more things I can do about it. like playing games, watching anime, collecting figures and incrreasing my knowledge. heheh! ^^
Interesting stuff. Wonder if the dying thing is actually true .... I sleep 8 hours roughly, get washed and have breakfast all in 30minutes and out the door for school, >.
It has come to a point in my life that sleep is amongst the most important things to me. Without sleep our physical and mental state does not function properly. On average, a person is suppose to get 8 to 9 hours of sleep (this may be a lot of time for many of you). Of-course not many people actually do that. I try to get as close to that recommended amount as possible. Also, and this shouldn't be hard to believe, lack of sleep leads to an increase in headaches and stress. This increase can lead to panic attacks and possibly the cause of a shooting in a public area around noon (people deal with stress differently
"People aged between 45 and 49 got the least amount of sleep, with the average standing at 7 hours, 5 minutes a night. Next was a group of people aged between 40 and 44, who got an average of 7 hours, night minutes sleep each night. Sleeping the longest was the group of people aged 85 or over, who got 9 hours, 47 minutes of shut-eye on average." - Japan Probe Err, are you kidding me? I'm 13, a tenth grade student, and sleep approx 4 hours on a school night, 7 hours, if lucky, on the weekends (of course, entertainment is also a factor I can't put down). Do the Japanese have to get 8 hours of sleep to live through the day or something? The stress they're experiencing is NOT EVEN CLOSE to college-bound students in the US in 2007. Also, isn't it scientifically proven that older people sleep fewer hours...? I wonder why the elderly sleep so much in Japan... And why is this causing billions of $ loss in Japan? If workers are getting less sleep, doesn't that mean they're WORKING MORE for their company? Shouldn't Jp companies be making MORE money?

hmm that depends on the shift im on..... some times I do a late shift followed by a early shift.... and when that happens I get anything from 7 hours to 3 hours or less
It depends if I have school or not, if I have school I mostly sleep 3 to 5 hours (and mostly sleep a bit after school). But if I don't have school or if it's weekend I sleep for 10 to 12 hours. ^^
6-7 hours of sleep on weekdays and on weekends it is about 9-10 hours. To compensate for my lack of sleep, i sleep in class for most of the time.^^
i'll get more sleep if there's no dannychoo.com
Out of topic here. Reading comments on this post reveals may of us dannychoo.com's reader is actually students? BTW, I have an average 6-7 hours of sleep a day. And I'm still having a hard time waking up. Maybe I'll try your tips Danny. Write down everything I have to do tomorrow so my brain and body and be totally relax while sleeping.
I have a sleeping disorder that makes my body need at least 10 hours of sleep to function properly. I usually sleep about 14 hours. It sucks. >.>
I generally average 3-4 hours of sleep per night. This has not varied very much since the latter half of grade school. I'm 27 now. Between a severe case of insomnia, a serious caffeine addiction, a highly-stressed lifestyle (I live where I can afford, which makes for 1-2 hour commutes), a 45-50-hour/week job, a girlfriend, and a very high value in family (who lives 45 minutes from home), I hardly ever stop. The only time I really sleep more than 4.5 hours is when I'm sick, which generally happens once a year during Flu season.
I sleep 8h hours during the week and probably 9/ 10 during the weekend. But sometimes I go on a 96 hours spree, not sleeping at all and I work work work. No coffee or extra help. It actually makes me feel great, that and sleeping more then 10 hours XD The question about less sleep = less time, I think it is the same, since the more we sleep the less of life we get. So in the end, it goes side by side almost.
I sleep like 6hours...and after lunch I'm tired as hell... Well...today I'm only gonna get like 4hours...it's about 3 now and I have to wake up at 7 :(
well in mexico in some states have a nap time like monterrey or guadalajara, the do this cause there's hours in the day where the heat is really high so it's better sleep than be dead for the heat. I usually sleep 6-7 hours when i was in school that time was shorter like 4 hours and i hate that i love sleep (^. ^;)
I usually get a fair amount of sleep, my schedule isn't very rigorous.
