And just what does this idol Mihato Ise have to do with the Leopard launch last Friday?

Mihato was part of the leopard launch festivities at Yodobashi Camera in Akiba. She must have had a shock as only 30 people lined up for their copy ^^;

But I dont think she had as much of a shock as the folks at Bic Camera in Yurakucho. You may remember the Wii launch at Bic Camera last year where hundreds lined up.
Compared to that, Leopard managed to get a total of 4 (!) people to line up. As you can see from some of these pics, Bic Camera went out of their way to make the launch look good. In this case we say to the organizers at Bic Camera in Fist of the North Star style - "You Wa Shock!"
Below: Multi tasking desktops with the new Spaces feature.
Below: Ready to greet the small batch of Leopard buyers.
Below: A whole itinerary of events!
Below: The guy needs a mega phone to shout at 3 people.
Below: The extra people are probably people on the way to the station and staff.
This reminds me of the Vista launch where Microsoft tried to get as many employees as possible to attend the launch ^^;
Below: At least Mihato was cute - me likes chubby round faces.
Below: The first 130 people in line got to get a Leopard T-shirt - but only 30 people lined up at Yodobashi ^^;
Below: The Apple store in Ginza was a different story - about 350 people waited in the rain.
Below: I was going to go in Vader armor but despite being a sith lord - his weak spot is rain ^^;
Staff - "Who wants a slap in the face?"
Crowd - "Meeee!"
I've installed Leopard on my old MacBook. Crashes when using my existing account (tested the install with upgrade instead of clean) but works ok with a root account.

After playing about with it for a few hours, I've come to the conclusion that Apple should hire people who worked on Explorer away from Microsoft as Explorer still kicks Finders booty.

The most disappointing thing is that Finder doesn't generate thumbnail views of whats inside a folder - something that Explorer does well.

Am in no rush to upgrade my MacBook Pro as Leopard comes with Apache 2 and PHP5 which will mess up my localhost dev environment.

I'll wait a few months before upgrading to Leopard with a clean install. I also prefer Explorer that Finder. I've downloaded Quicksilver which I've heard is supposed to do a better job than finder plus a bunch more nifty tricks. Just haven't gotten around to installing it and learning it

Giving it a try right now Danny. I know I said I was going to wait...

I did a backup last night of my MacBook Pro and earlier today did a clean install to Leopard. So far everything is going well for me. Although it will take a little while for me to reinstall my favorite apps. I probably should have waited until I had more time but I was really curious.

I have heard that some developers don't have their software ready for Leopard! Lets see, they have know for how long that Leopard was coming... ^^; Also I have heard a few apps don't work nice with Leopard. Only one I have come across so far was Yahoo Widgets. I like to use the Flickr widget on my desktop.

The new interface will take a little getting getting use to. I can't stand that stupid star field at login. What was wrong with the blue background.

Cover flow is not too bad for a quick shuffle through photos or contents in folders.  I'm still disappointed with Finder.  Maybe I will start looking for a replacement when developers catch up on the sudden release of Leopard. ^^;

I will hold final judgement until I get to use Leopard for a while. I've gotten so use to the older GUI scheme and way of doing things... Not that Leopard is that different, but I do find myself hunting for things.

ONE IMPORTANT POINT! Hope I have everyone's attention now. Some people are having trouble with upgrading to Leopard, including a colleague of mine. It might be a good move to do a clean install of Leopard...

@Leo, QuickSilver is a great app. It's one that will grow with you and always meet your needs. I can't imagine my Macs without it.

not surprised w/ amount of pp that waited in line (doesn't mean that there are ONLY 30 pp who store bought it that day, does it?)

can't believe Leopard comes out the same day in JP...

does JP prefer Vista over Leopard?

I did an upgrade on Friday. I'm not impressed.

I know that Leopard is a much better OS "under the hood" in terms of security and stability, and I'm looking forward to poking around the better international language support in the terminal (long overdue), but in terms of useful new things, I haven't seen much.

Most of the major new features generally fall into the categories of useless (Stacks, which without scrolling or right-clicking is just eye-candy), something that's already been done (Spaces, which is welcome but not new), or something that should have been a minor update to the previous release (Safari's better stability, the better international language support, some Spotlight interface tweaks).

I'd be pretty upset if I'd spent my own money on it. I'm still a little upset, as I got no real new functionality, but have to look at what is, in my opinion, an uglier interface. They finally unified the themes, whcich is good, but the Safari tabs are less legible, the input window stands out less than the background windows, the new window control buttons are garish, the translucent top-bar is awkward looking over a light-and-dark colored background, the new icon theme just isn't nearly as attractive as the old one.

Other little things are broken, too: The Finder sidebar icons are far less useful when they're so tiny, and the dock's magnification feature is near wortheless when the new dock's lack of a visual top-boundary makes it vague as to when the mangification will kick in. I also dislike the little glowing spots on the dock. They're more obtrusive than the black triangles, yet take more time to process visually.

I still find OS X to be a tremendously better OS than the alternatives, or else I'd be really angry.

I installed Leopard before it was released (GM), and I LOVE it. Spaces and Stacks are more useful than I would have ever imagined. The updated networking feature is even more surprising. It's also faster for me. The only problem I'm finding is that it complains every time you open an application for the first time (must have taken a page out of M$'s book).

Danny, I can't believe you feel that Explorer is better than Finder. Maybe it's because I've been using the Finder for over 15 years, but I find it WAY better than Explorer. It feels more natural for me. Also, now all files (not folders like you mentioned, but files) have previews of what they are. The new "iPhone" style view is kinda boring though. Overall, the new easier to manage networking ability with the TCP auto-buffer makes this OS worth its weight in gold, IMO.

Haven't tried it and don't plan to. It's much better and more stable than Windoows, but I use Ubuntu...Ubuntu us better than everything else.

I dun think it will work with my aging G4 mac. I rather get a new Mac with it. Call me crazy but I find Windows Explorer better in terms of working with many files and file details.

One feature I hope they did upgrade is the recyling bin that shows where the file was deleted from.

Problem with macs is there are not much 3d Software, Games and Eroges, but that can be solved now with bootcamp preinstalled. I wonder how the lastest 3D game will run though.

Also read that Adobe product might run into some problems with leopard and need an upgrade to the latest version

As a long time dual user of Macs and Windows cant say I am that impressed with Leopard to make a purchase upgrade. But I will recommend getting a new mac instead.

Windows has no advantage if you have Wine installed. And, yes; Wine does in fact work with DirectX, despite common misconceptions.

I would assume Windows is more popular than the Mac OS's with Japan being a big Window's base laptop country. But it will become more popular, I don't have any doubts on that. Maybe Mihato should have wore a bikini to bring in more people lol, it would have generated more interest ^^.

I'm not sure if I need to upgrade, based on how I use my computer, but I definitely wouldn't mind getting it for Christmas. Too bad more people didn't show up though. :( I would have gone if I lived in Tokyo.

I'm a Windows user myself, and I refuse to go into fanboy OS wars. It's just that only Windows has the softs I need for everyday use.

But despite the few people in lines, at least Leopard is looking hot and a real upgrade from Tiger.

At least from what I read so far... great improvement, as long as you have a Mac that can deal with it.

Completely different from Vista. It sucks. And I do mean it, since I'm using it. My previous PC that had WinXP Pro installed was 10x superior to my current laptop which came with Vista Ultimate.

I'm writing a really long complaint letter for Microsoft... there's no excuse for such failure.

I'm a little surprised that there are any queues at all outside the official apple stores.

I, personally, will be sticking to XP. I have no desire to upgrade to vista and I certainly won't be converting over to OSX, although I am willing to have it run side by side with a dedicated Windows machine.

if only...if only....if only I can install a MAC OS X leopard in my PC(not a mac ^^;)I would definitly tried it.

or should I use hackintosh? http://tinyurl.com/2auhht

btw,I heard( from here - http://tinyurl.com/2jkcpr )leopard was one of the first mac genereation to have a BSOD(bluscreen of death - windows)when they tried using the upgrade process instead of a clean installation.

I'm having a plan on migrating to vista in the near future. and also planning on getting a mac for myself, but not sure when...

I think it was completely necessary for Mihato to be at the Leopard launch, or else, how would people know that Bic Camera is selling the new OS for Apple? I mean, its just common sense! Without Models, products would flounder in the abysmal world of indifference.

i'd try out a mac os (any for that matter) if only I could install it on a pc. I hate it when they bundle OS with hardware. Such troublesome for the consumer. Apple is such a monopolizing company.

For those wanting to install OS X on an x86 machine (aka PC), go here:

http://www.osx86project.org/

As far as the WINE comment, WINE and Parallels are about the same compatibility wise, with Bootcamp being more compatible than both due to native booting. Dual booting on the *nix machine will also enable full compatibility.

Installed and one of the feature I like the MOST is Time Machine!
They also have built-in translator, haven't tried it yet.

I'm not sure what I missed in Tiger because I only ran it until first Leopard beta came out. But I must say it's slightly better than Vista ;). Now I'm waiting for an external backup drive to try out time machine. Oh and I'll replace my broken laptop with a new MB soon.
