Japanese Teachers

A teacher at a secondary school resigned yesterday after it was made clear that he was sexually harassing his students.
During swimming classes, the teacher would write things like "What is your bust size?", "I want to have sex with you", "tell me the name of the boy you like" on a golf ball and throw it in the pool.
After forcing the students to swim down to collect the balls, the teacher then made the girls write down their answers to his perverted questions and read them out aloud.

So what happened to that teacher? Nothing - he gets away scott free just by handing in his resignation. Unfortunately this is not the only case of sexual harassment in schools and can be regularly seen in the news over here.

Are there cases of harassment (sexual or otherwise) by teachers in your region?
I remember a teacher back in primary school who kept using the F word to encourage kids not to use it. She would bring the kid to the front of the class and say "Why the F*** do you keep f**king swearing?" Seemed to work as it normally left kids trembling after the experience.

Wait, the dude did that stuff and the students WENT ALONG with it? Here the kids probably would've castrated him. Though we don't have such thing as swimming classes...

In 1994 at my school a male school teacher was caught harassing a male student who was unconscious and sick at the infirmary. The teacher then was forced to resign.

The teachers here are pretty nice. There's only one in my school system that seems to have a power trip and likes to yell and make the students cry of the (IMHO) dumbest things. The only scandal we had recently was a teacher getting caught driving drunk, but that was one major city down from us.

Every nation with some sort of an adult teaching kids professions have abuse cases. We hear the same thing in America, though obviously it's not exactly an epidemic.

@ Niemi

It's easy to talk big, but they are KIDS. Students and kids (even older students) feel intimidated by adults and especially if they are teachers, it's easy to be taken in by what they do, even if it's abusive. I hear it's a psychological conditioning of the kids. But of course, look back at the cases and it's easy to get shocked at it.

Teachers in my country are allright, i mean there are no sexual harassments but some tend to be somewhat crazy. And you really can't blame them, after all a lot of students are crazy stupid jerks (as we say "sabani" and "seljacine") so it's more likely that students do stuff like that :D

Student union/council usually keeps teachers in line. And if by chance teachers go too far then they have to deal with courts. Here it's not so much a problem where teachers harass people, it's more that most of them aren't qualified enough in their subject.

that's a first. In the UK, the students tend to harrass the Teachers!!

Teachers do get protection from unions and the like but if they step even slightly out of line, society sides with the student, even if they are asses!!

If this happened to my daughter I would hunt the guy down and beat him.

You really don't have that over here in the USA, but it does happen that teachers do stuff like this. Instead of resignation your license is revoked.

Pedophiles deserve one place: jail. They shouldn't even exist! If I was the parent, this guy would not want to mess with me.

Teachers here are (mostly, and in my experience) reliable and honest. They tend to keep real life out of the classroom to set an example, so most of us do as well.

try doing that in singapore and I'll guarantee the following: 1) parents come knocking on your door and say "I'll sue you", 2) your face gets to be on national tv and you can start looking for a plastic surgeon and if unlucky, the victim might either try suiciding or whip you to death with salt-soaked canes =P

While the reality can be pretty serious, anime and manga still manages to depict these events in a humorous light...

Not only from the teacher point-of-view (Azumanga Daioh, even Negima), but also when the 3rd-grade female student hilariously instigates the harassment (i.e. the controversial Kodomo no Jikan).... I suppose it's a matter of separating fiction from reality no matter how blurry a person may see it... ^_^;

When people express thier fantasies like that, especially professors that turn out to be some sort of pedophiles... There is true danger to correct!

I agree with Jesper, but putting those back to their respective places and preventively ban them from being teachers should do the trick.

I wonder if that teacher overcame the pre-admission psychology tests or if there were none.
In the last case there should be in an automatic fashion to avoid that kind of terrible issues.

seriously? i thought this kind of stuff only happened in anime or manga. i can't imagine this kind of stuff happening over here without the PTA or politicians causing an uproar. the individual in question would probably be tried in court and sentenced to jail time and after he/she gets released, be ostracized from society and labeled as a child molester. but the teachers in my area are generally caring, educated, respectable human beings, although some of them can be a bit bitchy at times. still, i wonder why those kids never went to the authorities.

sad thing is that happens more than you think here in Selden... the way the Suffolk County police and law here apparently works, the guy would get a slap on the wrist and he'll be back teaching in two years. Castration by katana should be more fit.

There isn't really much in the way of perversion here. But most of the teachers are just plain stupid. It's probably not a good thing when you regularly correct your teachers on their own primary subject. >.>

What, they fired Kimura-sensei? :P

Jokes aside, resignation is interpreted as a far worse punishment over there.
Meaning the guy will never be a teacher again with that reputation.. believe me, stuff doesn't quite work like here in western countries.

We had a teacher being fired some months ago because she had a relationship with a student... he was 16 when it happened, I think.

Never heard about male teacher cases though. Things like that happens the mostly between priests over here. Ironic.

And he gets away with it just by handing in his resignation? Theoratically that means that he can move to another city, change his identity and become a teacher on another school and do the same thing all over again. I don't even want to think of it that he's going to do that again. People like him should be procecuted to at least a forced therapy.

In Singapore, we teachers never behave like that because most important reason we very disciplined in conduct and very strict, not because schools here dont have swimming pool, we have actually but small one for fish because they are very expensive, and even though like that we are already very proud.

I don't know if its like this all over the US, but where I live, just the rumor that a teacher has done something wrong to a student causes an uproar and usually involves an investigation and many times ends with that teacher getting fired depending on how bad it was. But I haven't heard of teachers harassing students all that often.

In Australia you would never work in the industry again so long as you live. Over here it is so intense that if you were to help a girl who had fallen over, and lifted her by her thighs (fetal scoop in arm) she could technically sue you for sexual harassment.

You need to literally say something like "now Jenny I need to help you to the infirmary, and I will need to touch you in order to carry you, it is not sexual, do you understand."

Its pretty screwed up, the media has alot of teachers really scared.

I have even had a college who was afraid to intervene between two girls fighting for fear of accused of groping them.
