There's a software crack to unlock the iPhone so you don't have to tinker with the hardware...hopefully by the time you get there they'll be able to release it. Legal issues seem to postpone the release for this. Check out engadget from time to time for the latest on this. :D

I've been to the south west for 3 weeks last year, did many national parks. I recommend Yosemite very much. Sequoia is also quite nice with its huge Sequoia trees. Calico Ghost town (between LA & Vegas) is an interesting & well preserved ghost town. Death Valley is not very interesting, just a lot of sand and very hot. All the rest that we did were parks beyond Vegas, so that might be a bit too far from LA. There are still a few other parks that are within California though. Universal studio is quite nice too, we went in May and there were almost no waiting times at many of the rides. So off-season is the best time to go, and not too hot. Danny, I'm sure you probably know already, but the iPhone is currently GSM only. No 3G for Japanese access. I'm waiting until it has 3G and support for custom ringtones before I even consider one.
