Wherever I go I'll see battered houses especially here in my new place Evansville, Indiana seeing as it's a small city. But if you go out to the rural areas that's where you find the old houses that aren't either broken or abandon. ^^;
that's a classic house.
There are quite a few around here...but they seem to be knocking them down and replacing them with highrises at an enormous pace...so much that there is a surplus of houses at the moment
My area has older generation houses, but generally well kept...just dirty.
I've only seen battered up houses in the rural philippines. Especially when I went to Boracay- which was still damaged by the tsunamis back them. A nice mixture of high-class hotels, Resorts and messed up civilian houses ^.^
Not here in Aus, but there were plenty back in Russia. Japan has some pretty crazy looking houses from what I've seen (flickr and stuff), pretty inspirational stuff.
plenty here at niichi yokote machi too... but here it is more like low cost housing.some of them do look old. well at least they got houses rather than homeless. Nihongo house chotto takaiine..
Quite a number around my state, but those near growing housing estates are often knocked down to make way for further development. Abandoned ones tend to become home for foreign immigrants and drug junkies.
Not so much old falling down house in my part of the country but old falling down barns. We I live it is old cattle country that has moved towards orchards and farming so there are quite a few old barns left over from the cattle days.
I have read somewhere that when you buy land for housing in a neighbourhood area, they would include whatever is already built on it for free, including a house. The type of houses may range from a decent one to the battered up houses like the above.
we've got a lot of battered and old houses that dates back to the Spanish Rule (1521-1898) especially around the old manila district. some old buildings are preserved by the government but some are being used as warehouses and letting it deteriorate.
over in singapore. you cant see such houses anymore. the common old buildings are about 20-30years old and built by the goverment. pretty good stuff.

I often heard this from others that have gone to Japan, regarding old houses (either battered ones or very traditional ones) in the middle of highly urbanised areas. Here in Dublin the situation is a bit different since the country is only undergoing urbanisation pretty much now, and only for the last 10 years or so with the big economic upturn. However, because of Dublin's nature as a tourist city, the government is extremely opposed to demolishing old buildings, even if these have little to no historical or cultural significance. Last year I lived in a building in central Dublin (Aungier Street), and my landlord informed me it was one of the oldest buildings in Dublin, probably around 400 years old. Needless to say I hated it, and it got me thinking: this building has literally no history of its own that hasn't been painted over in endless refurbishments. What is the need to keep it???
No, only some old barns. Usually houses here are pretty decent, about 1-30 years. Except there is pretty dead village 6km to east here that has quite a lot old houses.
They must stand out quite a bit then, being surrounded by modern buildings. Maybe there isn't an old man inside, maybe its head quarters for some intergalactic warriors?
i'm imaginging it to be some secret entrance to a super robot hangar under tokyo, lol! there are tons of squatters housing colonies in my country. funny that the government won't/can't/don't do something about them... they cause a whole lotta trouble and nuisance, bleh...
We do get a fair share of old houses here. Nobody really sticks around to find out. Cos we're all quite superstitious. :/
I live out in a small town in a rural area. So we do have plenty of old looking farm houses and the like. Most of the old houses in Madison are usually just run down slums. the only secret lair in those is probably a crack house or something.
we got old building from the colonial. dutch colonial, it seems those building now are home for the homeless in my country, cafe, restaurant, bar, tailor, truck station and museum. the 1 thing that i know is... don't come to this area at 9pm more. carjacker here is really fierce, they will hit your window with an axe to open it and pull you out. they were called "kapak merah" red axe in english never happen to me, but i heard it in the news
There sure are houses like that in my town... except they come with a $400,000 price tag. Realtors wonder why they don't sell...
There's a lot of battered houses here in my area. You won't have a hard time finding one. You'll probably find one in each corner. :D High rise buildings are still rare around here.
Good God, its left unharm. In my home country these had gone demolished by local district security (not police). Hmm the picture describe its in good care, despite its rotten look.
you might have bumped into me a few times in london Danny. we live like less then 20mins away from each other. Im very close to hackney. Im from Tottenham. we got plenty of council houses as well as councils to run the houses & the occupants just let the house degrade till its litterally about to fall apart if u sneeze on it then call in the council & have them deal with it.... quite a few of the houses here are like that. but not all houses on this street belong to the council. theres about 4-5 houses here that they have housed Ex-Cons & single mothers with 20kids who will happily ram their little trikes into your cars then climb all over it & jump on the bonnet like it was some sorta bouncing castle.... this area use to be very nice....then a few people died or moved away & the council muscled in...

Theres a house that looks like it could be really nice near me, but its all overgrown and has 2 old rusty cars infront of it. I should take pictures of it one day.
Here in my country, like in most third world countries, much of what you can see is a mix of "battered houses" which belong to the poorer citizens and "ok looking houses" which belong to the middle classes. I rarely see "rich looking houses" because those can only be found in private subdivisions or estates.
Not a lot of run down old homes in NYC but back in Ohio where I'm originally from there are many. Usually they're just abandoned due to some eviction or what have you and then they melt in to the farm land. I like old houses like this...I think they look cool.
