A while ago, in a move to clamp down on illegal parking, the police invited civilians to join in on looking for offenders. Not just anybody can sign up to be a traffic warden though and you need to be working for one of the many incorporated companies that signed contracts with the police like the security and real estate management businesses.

Now that civilians are in on the act, you see very otaku looking like folks dressed in these green uniforms carrying around with them a terminal and a digital camera. They need to take a picture of the offending vehicle in order for them to get their commission I guess. You see them squatting to take a picture of the car with a smug face.
Photo taken at Akihabara some time last month.

I personally haven't been ticketed for illegal parking in Japan. The streets are so incredibly unclearly labeled that I'm not sure where I'm allowed to park so I always end up looking for coin parking.

Speaking of parking, this is how you should not be parking your car.

as you should know Danny, Traffic wardens here in the UK are a severely hated breed. since most of them are a sly bunch of mothers usually forced by their companies to meet certain targets e.g. clamp X amount of cars a day...because of this they usually find themselves on the receiving end of a lot of Verbal & Physical abuse which I don't at all condone

Parking here is very flexible, you see people double parked a lot of the time. I never tend to put money in the metre as attendents come buy and stick the "bill" under your windscreenwiper (it is the same price, about USD1 per hour, whether you use the metre or have the parking attendent do it for you). you can pay for 3-4 days at any convenience store.

Can't really say much about Parking Wardens. It has been a while since I lived somewhere with them.

parking wardens where i'm at are idiots that flock in like a bunch of ravenous crows...

apparently, a little bird told me they have a quota to hit every month. so they usually go on a "bombing" spree to make up for the unissued tixs, blah...

Haha Mirai itasha, that's so nice :)

Guess there is parking issues everywhere ^^
Where I live, there used to be free car parks all arround the town center, but they've all become places where you have to pay 1EUR to enter and park you vehicule.
There are also some place you can park, along the sidewalk of the street, but have to pay at kind of ticket machines for every single minute you stay there, and that's expensive.
But since it only costs between 10EUR and 20EUR when you're ticketed for illegal parking, lot of people don't care and go for parking freely, due to the very low frequency of ticket delivery. Policemen are a bit lazy ^^;

Parking offenders issues, here in my workplace..people tend to DOUBLE PARK.(wtf)and not being summoned. These MPSJ patrollers loves to hang around at certain place and then just fill their quota by summoning cars that been parked in the right parking space for exceeded time limit issues only.(wth),ppl cant carry so much coins in their pocket. They are so f**king lazy to do their job in the sun.

there are rarely parking issue here in indonesia. as you nearly can park anywhere you want as long its empty. and you just have to pay the "parking officer"(usually civilian), and park the car / motorcycle.

convinient but sometime make the traffic jammed

I live in suburbia Long Island and parking isn't usually an issue but for some reason my town, Selden, has many how should I say "special" people and all the side roads in my town have cars parked on both sides outside the properties to the point where one car can barely fit through the road even when they have a mile of clear driveway to park them. I know for a fact that in Japan you are not allowed to do this and you would be fined alot. As much as these wardens piss me off I sure want them here in Selden.

lol. is that your car danny?

There's not a lot of police that tries to issue tickets around here, they are not that strict and frankly I don't mind. But during the holidays, they'd really crank it up a notch and become so strict that even just the tiniest mistake they'd issue you a ticket. Of course the reason for this is because most people wouldn't want to be issued and would just pay the officer some cash to let it slide. Go figure. heheh! ^^

Here, when you needed a parking officer or (ranger) they're never around. And in a blink of an eye, they're there to book ya... sometimes they'll tell you its not they're street so they won't book illegally parked cars. Sad... so sad

Very otaku looking-like folks"... Ha ha ha, sounds like Konata referring everything to anime and manga.

Yes, I admit that when I was in Paris (France) it was quite the mayhem about car parking and also that cops weren't too much on this matter (like lu-k said). For many, it is a bit like lottery: If you had a ticket, you would blame it on bad luck rather than saying to yourself that you should have tried to be more responsible and had paid first.

Ironically enough, this is both a source of concern as it could really give the government a good amount of dough, but certain people don't care and accumulate tickets until the president's amnesty comes into action.

Lazy, wily law trespassers ;)
