Bandai announced yesterday that due to hard times, they are to halt production on Gunpla and enter the Apparel business > yesterdays press release at the Bandai Namco site...

OK, I hope I got some of you there ^^; While I was telling pork pies (lies) about Bandai halting production on Gunpla, I'm not joking when I tell you that they have entered the apparel business with their new Sweet Razzor line of ladies clothes.

IT Media was at the press conference yesterday afternoon and according to their report, Bandai say that they have already been making apparel such as Ultraman, Puri Cure and are going to invest heavily into ladies fashion. Their first investment is paying for the gorgeous Leah Dizon to be their initial promo girl.
I guess all this investment in ladies clothes mean no Perfect Grade Gundams anymore heh? ToT.

I thought I read "Sweet Razor" with 1 Z. It sounded like something for shaving legs or something :p
The clothes look kinda nice and quite modern Japanese fashion. But it might be a good thing that they are starting out small with a small clothing line and see what happens.
It might not do well because you're not expecting a clothing line from Bandai :).

Whoa...the honey on the far left is gorgeous. The outfits on the far left and middle are by far the sexiest.

if the clothes of the models on the picture are Bandai's designs then they might have some success in the ladies apparel sector ^^

getting Leah Dizon as an initial promo model is a good move by Bandai marketing while Leah Dizon's popularity is still hot ^^

Ooo. I'm stoked. You can enter a Bandai shop without feeling the intensity of Ota-ness in the air! ^^;

I am curious who the designers are for the current and upcoming line up.

Danny you stinker! ^o^ You did have me think NANI!? This is really weird!

Seriously, when I first looked at this I too thought wow isn't that a surprise, but when one gives it some thought...

Over the last few years Bandai has been diversifying themselves. Last year they became the major sponsor for Toyota Team Kraft in the 500 class of SuperGT. Last year they finished 5th in standings and are currently 16th this year.

Believe it or not there are a lot of female Gundam fans in Japan. Both young and older woman know a lot about Gundam, but don't really let on to their level of knowledge. I was really surprised at how much my fiancee knows as well as many of her friends. A greater level knowledge than many guys. So much for the argument of young American female fans who tell me girls don't like mecha shows. This is not including the appeal of other Bandai series with young woman.

I'm sure you can see how Bandai will see this as cross over sales opportunities.

Perfect Grade Ladies anyone? Comes with fully functional body, equipped with self-defense module and uses alot of money for maintanance ^^;

Body Parts and hair may or may not be customisable ^^;

It's nice that Bandai's opening up it's market. Leah Dizon looks kinda nice in those clothes.

In what scale do these clothes come in? Are they prototypes or mass production models? Are red-colored clothes three times better?

Is it just me or is the girl in the middle Leah Dizon? She looks an awful lot similar. (I love Leah, heh)

Anyways, those clothes look like they'd appeal to young japanese women so I guess Bandai will do alright if the rest of their range is similar.

I'd love to buy some Bandai clothes! I find the two outfits on the left to be amazingly cute. >_< I want... but I'll probably never have.

As far as Bandai doing well in woman's clothing... I think they could, as I find most of these outfits to be very good. But I suppose they should focus more on underwear if the new trend in Japan holds! ;P

not being too optimistic here but who knows...companies in Japan seems to be getting into a lot of businesses. Take Sony for example, it was only last year that I knew that they were into cosmetics for a few years already. heheh!

Now if only Bandai would start making some men's clothing, maybe we could have a trend of some real innovation in the area.

Why must women get all the interesting outfits?

Hey Danny! I believe Leah Dizon is a Filipina in origin. I think she was brought up somewhere in the USA and lived there in Japan. :)

Call me crazy but I think it may work in the end.

They try to diversify themselves with a huge shift, but they will still produce Gunpla (hey Danny, April the 1st is long over! Got to wait for next year now! lol) as it is a branch that is good in terms of sales (unless I were wrong).

Those clothes seem good to me. They might be a bit too dull for some but at least they don't look like those shabby , torn-looking, ugly colored clothes you see in those supposed fashion events (you know, the ones with those skinny, grumpy and rigid so-called models and an insane fashion designer)

Interesting choice of diversification, the design looks pretty decent. I think they need to distance their marketing efforts and image away from the traditional Bandai brand to have any chance. Hiring a good looking spoke person is a good start, but if I had the call, I would start with lingerie first to establish creditability before moving to full blown fashion.

The idea is to sell lingerie to otakus as gifts for their girl friends, to get the girl friends hooked on the quality, style and fit, and when the fashion line comes out, eureka!

Of course, there is stopping the otakus from buying the lingerie and wearing it themselves......
