Plain and simple, Miss Song Ling is a Thief not an Artist.
There must be some major Haruhiist there, or just a random retard to go buy and do something to it. But, humans are different than ourselves. "You are soo bad!"- nice. The artists says so self.
Warhol combined with Haruhi throw in some Liechtenstein...with the help of photoshop and you end up with an overpriced artwork...I guess the taxdeduction was the appeal of buying it.
it actually looks more like a silkscreen print then a photoshoped picture... i just see little white spaces between teh colors where teh artist was off slightly on alignment, slight overlapping of some colors, and halftone patter for the details makes sense ... since silkscreens dont capture alot of detail ... and big areas of a single color but i could be wrong and its a photoshoped picture or something and teh newspaper press is off on the colors... if so thats pretty lame but i think its a silkscreen print :D
wtf!
It's horrible, sincerely. Some would call it a piece of modern art; this way of reasoning is void because it's simply plagiarizing something already existing (and turning it ugly). I too wonder who bought it. Anyway, hopefully it's for charity causes or I guess it would be an outrage to Haruhi fans (including myself).
Hmmm, I think I'll let others apply the same Warhol-Photoshop effect to Mirai... I'm STILL hopelessly working on my own Mirai "masterpiece", hehe :)
that's just plain thivery
Yay, I'm the first to vote "masterpiece"!
I think the only way I would even consider buying it, is if I was very rich and it was done by the creator of Haruhi or one of the head creators of the anime series.
rofl Baboon droppings xD I agree it's thievery =/

Egads! Someone has successfully taken advantage of the hopeless public before me. I feel slightly robbed.
Yer booo on Miss Song Ling for plagiarism. I saw this news on 2ch as well.
In that case, I can proclaim that hundreds and thousands of HCGs inside my hard drive is a work of art by simply turning the colors into negatives via Irfanview! I can be rich out of people's stupidity and ignorance!
this is bullshit... i'm miffed because i didn't think about this first! lol... =x fuzakeruna!!!~
10,000 AUD? This is Madness! Madness? No, THIS...IS....HARUHIIISMMMM!!! I initially thought this was some stunt pulled by 4chan but later found out to be true. I wonder if Kadokawa can sue.
but guys, didn't u realize the money came off this is going to support the Children's Institute?...that means it's seriously going for GOOD. I know this is definitely not a MASTERPIECE and I voted this for "Baboon droppings"as well, but surely no argument in how much good money it generated.:D

As an Australian I am ASHAMED of the actions of this artist. As an Australian media student, I can confirm that the article actually exists, emanating from the Herald-Sun on the 27 of July 2007, by one Alison Barclay. As an arts student, I must point out that it IS a work of art, precisely (but not exclusively) because it triggered debates such as those found on these pages.
thats the vagaries of life i guess... get away with what you can and make your name doing so.

Sorry to double post, but I just did some more Googling: http://www.niagara-galleries.com.au/artists/artistpages/theartists/song_ling/song_ling_frame.html Song Ling is a dude (who said Miss Song Ling?). From the stock room link you can see that he does this sort of appropriation all the time, though not of images as "well known" or recent as Haruhi. http://www.mcri.edu.au/Downloads/PR_Misc/Art_for_Science_Collection_2007.pdf That's the catalogue of works which went on sale. The work in question is 6th in his "When We Were Young" series. Acrylic on canvas. Was he deliberately cashing in on Haruhi-ism, or was this a case of "pick random cartoon character and render in Warhol style"? I suspect the latter. I also just called them up to confirm. According to them ("Art for Science"), that particular piece of work went for 11 000 AUD.
This "artist" Song Ling is paying homage to the artist Roy Lichtenstein as well as Andy Warhol. I still think it's crap. As much as I'm not a fan of either Warhol or Lichtenstein at least they were original in their thievery. Song Ling's stuff isn't to my taste, but I don't think she did it in Photoshop either. I certainly wouldn't pay 10 grand for it. At least it went to a good cause.
Nice artwork Jon! Let's try Mirai-Chan 70's Comics version next! lol.
bat droppings would be a word. now if it was the original artist i would have no problem, even somebody puting this on flicker, but an auction? hell no. there's always been a greay area aound copyright, but this ain't it.. kadokowa should sue the pants off this artist, even though it was for auction. the artist should have just gotten some image from creative commons and done this cheap photoshop work and called it a day. as an artist I am appauled, and if someone did this to my art without my permission, I would sue the pants off them just to teach them a lesson..

Dany, before opening your mouth (or using your fingers clicking the keyboard) make some research, Song Ling's artwork at least this one is not photoshop work ( http://www.evabreuerartdealer.com.au/ling_s.html ) Now, to like something and to agree in its cost “is a horse of a different color”

@Hinojosa in México Danny doesn't mention that Song used Photoshop. He just said there is probably a plugin available. Doh!
@icie, That would be my mistake, but I think you know that. Sometimes I make proof reading and typos mistakes after a hard day at work. I may only hold a minor in Art History and be an amateur photographer trying to recapture my skills, but both have contributed to how I conduct myself as an artist and a person. I know that simply because people debate my work doesn't make it art, and as an artist I'm responsible for the content of my work. I'm sure you understand that too, since you are not commending this artists slight alteration of copyright material.
WTH? who in there right mind would buy that for that kind of price? Besides, it doesn't even look that good. It's putting the godness of Haruhi to shame. o_O
this is call openly showing your pirated works. shouldn't be long before haruhi-sama sues him! meh~~
i don't want or like to sound a racist here but Song Ling sounds like korean or chinese, am i wrong? korea steals from japan china steals from japan japan steals from itself

This man knows how to make a living from his Art. Big respect, dude. And he's even succesful in making his work known cause of the huge ruckus all over the planet with all the Haruhi anboys who are crying "Sue the f*cker!!!".
I'm tired, and seeing this makes me angry AND grumpy =_= I see a difference between lucky artists, and skilled artists. This is one of those lucky artists. A skilled one would of done something more tasteful, perhaps carving a 1/1 scale marble sculpt of Haruhi...
Henry Song Ling is most likely Chinese (you can see his other artwork) but does it really matter? Now I'm just as pissed as everyone else here about this pirated artwork but you should understand that world is now a global community and cultural transactions happen all the time, sometimes in the form of piracy. One more thing: you forgot to mention that Japan "steals" from the West (i.e. America).
Doesn't deserve a dime for copying. There is nothing wrong about an artist copying another artist's picture to brush up their skills but never ever ever to make money or post it as their own.
actually is scary to see how big haruhism has became =x, people willingly to pay so much for something so easily photoshopped. and i'm one of those haruhi-ed xD

This is just a Pop Art ripoff. Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol did many stylized paintings of comic panes and photographs from other artists.
quite expensive for this "Andy Warhol"-type of picture. I may be a haruhi-fanboy but I'm not gonna pay for something I can do myself :) I'd rather spend my money on figures ;p

guy's both a genius and a thief for selling merely fan-art disguised as fine art. still, the talentless and effortless ways these so called artists live by trying to convince us of their artistic values of their artwork isn't so convincing to me, the art critic in me tends to see most modern art pieces such as this as nothing more than elaborate pricey pieces of junk anyway.

@sshole he got money by getting a haruhi pic and shopping it?! Everyone, find this guy and beat him up!
rofl the frog, i can't understand @¬@ about the haruhi...just a lucky thief o,o
